Y £ f 5 . nc6 CHECK-IN The Making of Our Yearbook The staff of the 1988 Laurel traveled to the Josten's Printing Plant in State College. Pennsylvania, on a blustery, cold day in November. The objective of the trip was to learn how our book is printed. We were taken on a tour through the printing processing plant. Our first stop was the check-in department. There the plant representatives look to see that all of our materials have arrived and are properly labeled. From there, our design forms are sent to the layout department and our written material is sent to the copy lab. In the layout department, the photographs are positioned on a sample page, marked for reductions, enlargements and special graphics, then sent on to the camera shop. Meanwhile, the copy is typeset by a computer operator to match the style chosen for the printing in the yearbook. Using VERY large cameras, photographers reshoot the necessary pictures in varying sizes according to our special layout forms. After developing, the pictures are reunited with the copy in the central sorting area. The finished negatives for the photos and the typeset copy are then pasted on the layout board and sent back to the photography lab for preparation of the offset press master. The master is then sent to the press room where huge printers process and print the pages in 16-page signatures. The printed copies are then sent to the folder. After all pages are printed and folded, a technician assembles each book using a machine that collates all the available signatures. The assembled books are then sent to the bindery where they are sewn and the covers are glued in place. Following final inspection, the books are crimped so that they will lie flat on a table, making it easier for you to enjoy them. The staff, following the impressive tour, retired to the Josten's library where they examined many of the more than 700 different yearbooks produced by Josten’s last year and enjoyed a short game of Win. Lose, or Draw with Lisa Closson playing the role of Burt Convey. Now you have before you the final product of our staff's efforts. We hope that you enjoy reading and remembering just as much as we enjoyed making it possible. The girls' basketball team rolled through a season of ups and downs. They began in early December, setting out to show marked improvement from last year’s efforts. Their hard work and dedication paid off as they accumulated more wins in their first two weeks than they had all last season. Then tragedy struck with the untimely death of head coach David Bowman. But the girls stuck together, finishing the season with hard-fought victories and stellar showings even in defeat. They entered the district playoffs hoping for advancement while knowing the experience would pay off for future teams whether or not they 94 earned a victory. We, the literary staff, would like to take this opportunity to look back, reflectively, and thank those who helped make the 1988 Laurel a lasting memory of our year together. We offer our gratitude to . . . The administration, staff, and student body who gave us the utmost cooperation on picture days and at deadline-crunch time. Gradler Studios for their excellent photography service and answers to our never-ending questions. Eric Vaughan and John Astolos, our tireless photographers, for their last-minute rushing around to take the pictures we needed yesterday. Mr. Wahl for helping us set up our computer programs and lending us the printer for deadline copy work. Mrs. Schaller and Julie Shirey for providing us with extra candid photographs. The business staff for keeping us financially sound during the year and allowing us to spend a little money” for certain extras. Mr. Sylvan Pinto for his guidance and patience with us throughout the year. Ms. Cindy Snyder for her assistance in arranging our plant tour in November and helping us with difficulties in production. Julie, our editor, for writing ALL our copy and allowing us freedom to experiment with our unique layout designs. Tricia and Julie for providing spirited holiday decorations in 105 throughout the year. Mrs. Bennett for all the extras” during deadline week. AT T for allowing us to reach out and keep in touch” with Mrs. B during her deadline absence. Mr. Toshiba for being reliable (sic) and producing quality copies. Paula Ewt for her calligraphy and her dedication to the editor’s job even after her graduation. Jill Berkstresser for her help in identifying numerous underclassmen on our photos. Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Bennett for allowing us to be creative and imaginative in producing this book and our summer supplement. r 200 1 MV ■ V; -a
