Carol Comtois 1955 Carol placed her young brother Kit in the middle of the floor, told him to be good for babysitter Carol, and sat down to do her homework. After a few seconds of serious study, Carol's constant hunger pangs overcame her, and she went to the kitchen to heat some soup. just when the soup was bubbling mer- rily, Kit began to shriek in mortal terror. Rushing out of the kitchen, Carol found him ensconced at the top of the stairs, waiting for a ride down. Won't you ever learn that what goes up should come down, under its own power? She asked him. By the time Carol got back to the soup, it was a blackened mass on the stove top. She sighed and made herself a snack of six sandwiches, cake, and a glass of milk. Fortified slightly, Carol went back to her homework. A few more seconds of study, and the phone rang. A call for Miss Carol Com- tois from Granville, Ohio, said the long distance operator, as Kit began to scream. Carol slammed down the receiver and ran to rescue Kit. Luckily, the operator was persistent.

Linda Brown 1955 Hey, you guys! Come on in, the water's neat, called Linda to some boys standing near the edge of the pool. The sun shone down on the sparkling water of the Mayfield Club pool, and Linda's short, up-swept hair glistened in the bright sunlight. She flashed a quick smile and instantly disappeared under the water. There were six splashes as the boys followed her. Linda suddenly found herself above the water, supported by a pair of tan shoulders. She gave a quick laugh and was dumped back underwater. When she came up, she was bubbling over with laughter. Watch me practice my part in the water balletfi she exclaimed. It's really fun, almost like Dance Club, she said to the kids who were sitting around the pool watching her. After a while she got tired of performing and went to sit with the others. Oh, you know, she said, this weather is almost like Arizona's. That's the most casual place you've ever seen! You really should go there sometime, it's just fabulous! Engrossed in telling about the fun she'd had in Arizona, Linda leaned back in her chair, ready to spend the afternoon soaking up the sun and talking. Oh I couldn't possibly make it Friday, I've got too many things to do. It's the thirteenth, you

Bonnie Costello 1956 I say, groaned one of the bats in Bon- nie's closet who had just fallen on his head. Why does the dormitory shake every morning at eight o'clock? Is that a riddle? asked another bat as he climbed out of a Kleenex box and waded through a mass of skirts to a suit hanger. Help! a small voice floated up from a pile of shoes and boxes. What's that? whispered the first bat. It's the girl, the one who throws things in here whenever she cleans up her room. Shucks, the voice came again, why am I always late for breakfast? Humph, muttered the first bat, if she'd stop sitting in here 'til all hours studying, she might be on time in the morning. Studying? I always thought she was lost! Oh, not Bonnie! She's smart, and she never gets lost, just confused sometimes. Yes, said the second bat as he peered over a clutter of resolutions from the Model U. N. Assembly, She certainly is confused right now . . . When she finds her way to this wall, we'd better tell her the door is on the other side of the closet. I want to be evil!
