Sue Boesel 1955 One day Hoover and Hazel were sent away from the dorm by their wicked house mother because they'd been tampering with the EXIT signs. The two outcasts wandered about in the forest, eating some crackers and cheese that Hazel just happened to have along. However, Hazel was doing more than eating . . . she was planning. If we drop some cracker crumbs behind us, maybe someone will follow our path and save us. Mrs, Lawyer is looking for me to tell me about next Thursday class meeting. She'll save us . . . Oh, I'm so clever! Soon they came to a gingerbread house. I think a nasty old witch lives in there, said Hazel. How do you know? asked Hoover. l've read this story before, said Hazel. Oh, traf, what will we do now?', Kick your shoe through the window and hit her on the head, suggested Hoover. Since Hazel was very good at this, she made a direct hit. She then rushed into the house, Put on the witch's hat, and said, Look, Hoover, I'm Witch Hazel! Hey, you guys, want to go out for a cigarette?

Bev Blackmore 1954 And what do you think of the future of monogamy in the United States, Miss Black- more? I called after Bev, as I pursued her upstairs to her room. I planted myself squarely in the doorway to block off all means of escape, and watched Bev scurrying busily around the room, pulling tennis racquets out of closets, finding sweat shirts under beds, and combing her hair. Would you rather I came back some other day to finish our interview, Miss Black- more? You seem to be rather busy. I was pondering upon the possibility that Bev had not heard me when she said, Swell, that'd be cool! Call me! She then darted through the door, there- by knocking me onto the bed in an undignified heap. I landed on something soft and squooshy which was wearing a large Y. It said, with a sincere gaze, Put a chain around my neck and lead me anywhere. Oh, let me be . . . your teddy bear. I ran to the window, but my hopes of an explanation from Bev were dashed when I saw her getting into the car. She waved and called, See yall' My every word was lost in the rumble of her engihes and the smoke from her exhaust. I dreamed I went to Yale in my . . .

Linda Brown 1955 Hey, you guys! Come on in, the water's neat, called Linda to some boys standing near the edge of the pool. The sun shone down on the sparkling water of the Mayfield Club pool, and Linda's short, up-swept hair glistened in the bright sunlight. She flashed a quick smile and instantly disappeared under the water. There were six splashes as the boys followed her. Linda suddenly found herself above the water, supported by a pair of tan shoulders. She gave a quick laugh and was dumped back underwater. When she came up, she was bubbling over with laughter. Watch me practice my part in the water balletfi she exclaimed. It's really fun, almost like Dance Club, she said to the kids who were sitting around the pool watching her. After a while she got tired of performing and went to sit with the others. Oh, you know, she said, this weather is almost like Arizona's. That's the most casual place you've ever seen! You really should go there sometime, it's just fabulous! Engrossed in telling about the fun she'd had in Arizona, Linda leaned back in her chair, ready to spend the afternoon soaking up the sun and talking. Oh I couldn't possibly make it Friday, I've got too many things to do. It's the thirteenth, you
