Brenda Beck 1952 You're so funny, Kay! Brenda exclaimed. I'm :ure Mother would let me drive to Mich- igan during spring vacation! It's bad enough when Dad gets gas bills from Akron and Bay Village. And anyway, that car is so old that it probably wouldn't get us there. Brenda raced the motor of her old car. Don't for- get to call me tonight so we can think up something exciting to do Saturday night. Like what, for instance? Oh, I don't know. If we canlt think of anything better, we can always go to Hudson and bomb some housesf' That sounds real exciting. Brenda shrugged. I know, but such is life. Oh, by the way, you'd better let me call you. If I get caught talking on the phone again, I probably won't even get out of the house. Mother is really getting strict. 'Bye. As Brenda drove off, Kay called after her, Are you going to do any homework tonight? Came the answer, Could be! Are there many before me? I've been bitten by the Black Widow spider.

Harriet Bebout 1956 Harriet sat down on the grass laughing and panting after a last period gym class. She was wearing a long tee-shirt, and a U.S. jacket was casually thrown over her arm. You know, she nodded to the group, that was hard work. The other girls resumed their conversa- tion about getting married. After listening attentively a minute, Harriet was ready to launch into a dissertation on the horrors of being a common housewife, when a furtive sophomore appeared around the corner of the school. Simply groaning, But think of all those dishes you'll have to wash . . Harriet got up and went over to the girl to explain softly why chapel line should be quiet. Well, I know you won't do it again, she finished, smiling, and leaving a trail of blue thank you notes, which spilled from her bloomers' pocket, Harriet bounced back to join the seniors who were going in to change. Only one more day this week, she mur- mured audibly. A wild gleam came into her eyes. And do you know, I think there's going to be a brew tomorrow nightf' She spun around on the baseball bat she was carrying in for Miss Slade. An apple a day . . .

Bev Blackmore 1954 And what do you think of the future of monogamy in the United States, Miss Black- more? I called after Bev, as I pursued her upstairs to her room. I planted myself squarely in the doorway to block off all means of escape, and watched Bev scurrying busily around the room, pulling tennis racquets out of closets, finding sweat shirts under beds, and combing her hair. Would you rather I came back some other day to finish our interview, Miss Black- more? You seem to be rather busy. I was pondering upon the possibility that Bev had not heard me when she said, Swell, that'd be cool! Call me! She then darted through the door, there- by knocking me onto the bed in an undignified heap. I landed on something soft and squooshy which was wearing a large Y. It said, with a sincere gaze, Put a chain around my neck and lead me anywhere. Oh, let me be . . . your teddy bear. I ran to the window, but my hopes of an explanation from Bev were dashed when I saw her getting into the car. She waved and called, See yall' My every word was lost in the rumble of her engihes and the smoke from her exhaust. I dreamed I went to Yale in my . . .
