Two Squads Grow To Four Under the supervision of Miss Carolyn Smith, a Varsity Cheerleading squad for both the basketball and football teams were established this year. The football squad consisted of six girls, the basketball squad with eight girls. The football cheerleaders, with the varsity football team so vic- torious, had much to cheer about. Cheerleader Denise Morrison said she, like all of the Lancer fans, was especially proud of this year's team having won their first Piedmont District Championship title. The football cheerleaders had a very suc- cessful and exciting Homecom- ing Week. They raised money by selling Homecoming candy and jars. Captain Sharon Ftigney commented, Cheerleading took 990!o of my time, but I loved it. While the football cheerleading squad consisted of six experi- enced cheerleaders, the basket- ball squad had to put forth a little extra effort because of five new members. New cheers had to be learned, uniforms had to be bought and cleaned, posters had to be painted and tags had to be made. New varsity cheerleading letters had to be ordered and stationery sets had to be sold for money making projects. Michelle Wilson, a new member of the var- sity squad, found the work time- consuming, but interesting. Both squads participated in the Christmas Parade on Novem- ber 28, a very cold Friday. Cheerleader Ftobin Smith com- mented, Jack Frost worked overtime on us that day! After the parade the basketball cheerleaders started their regular season practices. Practices were held on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:15 to 5:00. This year the junior varsity cheerleaders like the varsity cheerleaders were split into two squads. The J.V. football squad had only one returning member, Marsha Lopez. The rest of the football cheerleaders like all of the J.V. basketball cheerleaders were new to the squad. Their ad- visor, Mrs. Nola, was also new. The most amusing point in the J.V. cheerleaders' stay on the 88 Athletics rl' i ' Q i - ' rafts-:.s.tSfs?4 21,1 . . - -XMAS . 'w rgfisiii it L -' .. Four of the J.V. cheerleaders got lost on their way to the Carver game and didn't arrive until the middle of the first quaner. Overall the idea of two squads was a good idea. Whether they were football or basketball cheerleaders, they all were infected with Blue Magic. Xi
