During a time-out at the Martinsville game, Coach Bowen explains the next play to the J. V. players. Moving down the court with a fast break against Martinsville is a sophomore Darrell Philpott 320, Jim Spivey. We have the best record in the history of Laurel Park basketball and in later years those guys have the potential of es- tablishing a new one. The ninth grade team proved just how good they were when they brought home a first place trophy in the ninth grade tournament. The eighth grade basketball team had a fair season. Their record was 5-9. Most of the guys did well, said Coach Randolph. They worked very hard and are great prospects for the future if they stay with the program. I was proud of their performance and everyone did get to perform. Basketball 83

82 Basketball Q Looking Good For the Futur f L fm Prev! 44 ln a close game against Dan River, Steve Morrison blocks an opponents shot. Sitting on the edge of his seat at a close game is the principal, Dr. Russell Wolff. The Junior-Varsity team, with a season Coach Alvin Bowen describes as frustrating, had a district record of 5-5 and an overall record of 6-11. The season was frustrating because most of the games that were lost were lost in the closing moments. I don't feel the team played as well as they could have, said Bowen. They got im- patient and it hurt them. The most amusing part of the season was during their game against Fieldale-Collinsville. Dwayne Ellis, who started the game out with a technical foul, ended up winning the game at the buzzer. I enjoyed coaching the guys this year, said Bowen, but coaching girls has a slight advantage. They're much nicer to look at. The ninth grade basketball team had a very successful season. They did very well, said Coach Qtr is aww 1 ,. , r-.ss . X . I? at x egg . 1 get

First year members Kim Cobler and Lori n I m p ma.. Beese workout on the uneven bars. 84 Gymnastics l love it! was the answer given by Beth Donavent when asked about how she liked gymnastics. Beth, a returning member to the team, said that this year was the best. The team as a whole worked harder and their best improvement was on the bars. The gymnastics team was a young group but they learned how to work together to put forth a good team effort. The best competition categories for the team were the beams and bars. The team was not as good in floor and vault competitions. These two weaknesses prevented the team from actually coming in firstg however, they did come in second in several of their meets. One of these meets was the first one against Fieldale Collinsville and Patrick County, and this particular meet was their best. Even though the team did not win, the enjoyment of the season was competing and work with the other team members. This was the feelings of Terri Smith, and can be said as a mutual feeling of the team. Warming up before the meet are Beth Donavant, Terri Smith, Donna Kuyken- dall, and Lori Kanode. fi?
