try C68-545. The closing game of the season was a heartbreaking loss to Dan Fiiver in overtime C63-597. One fan said of the team, No one should condemn the team for their performance this year. No one ever wants to lose. They gave some of the best teams in the district a run for their money. The school should be respectful to the team. lf no one else wanted to represent Laurel Park in basketball, at least eleven people wanted to, wins or no wins. lf A Drewry Mason player slips one past Byron Stockton and Mark Gravely. Jeff Giles cuts off a Drewry Mason lay-up. Kelvin Keen and Steve Morrison use zone defense against Dan River. Jef anyone else thought that they could have done any better, then they should have played. Also, there was a big difference between this sport's season compared to that of foot- ball's. The football team kept winn- ing, so they had everyone's support. The basketball team had just the op- posite. No wins equals hardly any support, but it does bring a lot of ridicule. Where were all the pep rallies that the football team had? ri M Zgyvf Athletics - Basketball 81

Basketball - Instant Replay What can one really say about the varsity basketball team? This season seemed to be an instant replay of last season, which was an instant replay of the season before, etc. This year's team wasn't really all that big. It was like play- ing musical chairs with a basketball team. Players were quitting, some were added, ones who had quit returned, and even some were dropped. When all was over, eleven regulars remained. As for how the season went, the team's opening game was a close one with G.W. Carver. The latter pulled ahead in the last quarter to win 179-71J. Like the opening game, the rest of the season was filled with mostly losses. Laurel Park's only two victories were over Bassett Q68-643 and Patrick Coun- lwl,,i , , savers waxy, ,,.. ,.,,... . ..... 82 Basketball Q Looking Good For the Futur f L fm Prev! 44 ln a close game against Dan River, Steve Morrison blocks an opponents shot. Sitting on the edge of his seat at a close game is the principal, Dr. Russell Wolff. The Junior-Varsity team, with a season Coach Alvin Bowen describes as frustrating, had a district record of 5-5 and an overall record of 6-11. The season was frustrating because most of the games that were lost were lost in the closing moments. I don't feel the team played as well as they could have, said Bowen. They got im- patient and it hurt them. The most amusing part of the season was during their game against Fieldale-Collinsville. Dwayne Ellis, who started the game out with a technical foul, ended up winning the game at the buzzer. I enjoyed coaching the guys this year, said Bowen, but coaching girls has a slight advantage. They're much nicer to look at. The ninth grade basketball team had a very successful season. They did very well, said Coach Qtr is aww 1 ,. , r-.ss . X . I? at x egg . 1 get
