Prior to the first game of the season, Pitcher Leroy Gravely warms up. Veteran player Mark Gravely is all Pied- mont District pitcher. Trying to take an extra base, Jett Barnes changes his mind. Third-year payer Jett Gravely is All- Piedmont District 3rd baseman with a .407 batting average. Laurel Park's baseball team was in the spotlight more than once during the season. The Lancers had their first winning season in six years, ending the season with a 10-8 record. According to baseball head coach, Jim Comis, lt was a bit- tersweet season, the sweet part was that we had the best season we had had in a while. The disap- pointing part was the tact that though we did not make it to the play-offs, we had previously beaten Tunstall, the Piedmont District champs by a score of 9- 2, and Martinsville, the second place winners, by a score of 8- O. 76 Baseball - s t- ,Q , S' - . .. 5 VM as X Koss- ki X-,W . 5 Qsssisksws ,fl V I-'Ht' ' L Volleyball isn't the usual com- petitive sport. Unlike football and basketball volleyball is often overlooked in school sport. This sport is more of a fun sport although it is just as competitive and time consuming as the other sports in high school athletics. Volleyball was coached by Barbara Dameron. lt was the first time I had coached volleyball in a while. lt was really a joy working with the girls, said Mrs. Dameron. The girls on the team were really young. They had a lot of bad habits to break. Many of the girls had not been exposed to the proper skills needed to play the sport. Much of the season was used in teaching the skills re- quired. But on the other hand the girls had good serves which was something to work with. Sewing was the stronger part of our game. Although our record of 1-9 didn't show it we had a really hard working team last year. Our goal, said tennis player Bryan Adams, was to win a match. Also, we didn't want to finish last again in the tourna- ment. We did beat Tunstall and we weren't last. It was Todd Marlowe's first ex- perience playing tennis. Mr. Myers taught me to play, said Todd, and l really liked it. Todd received the award for the most improved during the season. He knew the basic skills and he taught them well. l learned a lot this season. Lisa received the coach's award for overall ex- cellence. With three coaches in four years, the team was still in a developing state, but most felt that the season was a good one for improving individual skills. Tennis and Volleyball 75

Senior leadership will deter- mine the outcome of next year's season. That's the way it should be, continued Comis. We showed signs of being good this year but I think we will have more talent than ever next year. We have 10 returning lettermen and 5 of them are Seniors. They guys are really enthusiastic about next year and are willing to put last year's season behind them and look forward to an even better season on the next go round.
