JV and Eighth Grade Competitive JV running back Larry Keen does stretching exercises at afternoon practice. Eighth grade place kicker Eugene Hall kicks off to the Carver Trojans. The Junior Varsity football team had a season filled with close games and very com- petitive teams. Their season record was 4-4. We were a good team that could have been bet- ter, says Coach Jim Jervey. He along with fellow Coach Eddie Crabtree commented on how good the players were. We loved working with them. They caught on quickly to what was going on in the game and we think that's important for any team. The most aggravating point of the season was in their game with Drewry Mason. The gun went off with four minutes left on the clock and with the team on the brink of a Lancer touchdown. The game ended with Drewry Mason com- ing out on top 20-14. Coach Fiandolph Chavis said, They were a good team. We had some very outstanding players and they were willing to work. He of course was talking about the eighth gradefootball team who ended their season with a 4- 3 record. They had a lot of close games and when they lost, it was in the closing seconds of the game. In closing, Chavis men- tioned that some of the players make a future varsity football team look very promising. Athletics - Football 69

10 Girls Moving on Up ,J Q -eps--f i . . 1? S Wuxi Third year player Vonn Wade, hustles for Edna Morrison takes a deep breath a loose ball. before shooting her free throw shots. Moving On Up Over the last 10 years the girls' basketball teams have realized what it feels like to bite the dust, but their determination took over this year and they fought for the respect that had been long due. Laurel Park's girls, both varsity and junior varsity, set their goals high and worked hard to reach them. The varsity girls didn't quite reach their goal of being number one in the Piedmont District, but they came close to it. They brought home a third place trophy after defeating long time rivals, Martinsville, in the last night of tourna- ment play. This victory meant more than a trophy, fsomething Laurel Park's girls had never won beforei it meant that Martinsville High had been beaten out of the third place position by the underrated Lancers The win gave the Lancers a sense of accom- plishment and a stronger determina- tion than ever. Along with the trophy the team had won the most important thing of all, respect. As for the girls junior varsity they had the right idea in mind when they sat out to gain the title of Henry County Champs. These were the first real games the girls had played this year. Dominating the three nights of tourney play the girls brought home victories over Fieldale-Collinsville the first night 125-125, Carver the second night Q23-153, and Drewry Mason the last night Q24-121, to gain the title and the first place trophy. The girls exten- ded their 3 game winning streak with three more victories. Including Foothills wins, the team finished the season with a 11-5 overall record. Basketball 71
