Number One in the District The highlight of the 1980-1981 sports season at Laurel Park had to be the varsity football team who captured their first Piedmont District championship. Even though they shared the top honor with the Martinsville Bulldogs, Laurel Park still proved that they could be number one. Not only were they on top in the Piedmont District, but they also downed almost every team in the Foothills District losing only to the Foothills champs, Fieldale-Collinsville, by a narrow margin 126-211. After years of being a marginally successful group, Laurel Park steadily built itself the reputation of being a formidable team. Last year Laurel Park tied the best varsity record they had to date 47-31, and they almost stuck to the record again this year had they not tied with G.W. Carver 114-141 in a game that could have given them a berth in the playoffs. Contributing factors to the suc- cessful season would have to begin with the excellent fan sup- port. Laurel Park's fans really stood behind their team this year and the pep rallies boosted school spirit. The great coaching staff also contributed, all doing a fine job in working with the Lan- cers. lt certainly showed. Most important of all were the con- tributions of the individuals who made up the team. They all gave their very best. lt was quite an experience, says Travis Millner. I really en- joyed being on the team because it had some good people to work with. We were a team in every way. We always kept our spirits up and exercised group effort and it paid off. I think the Fieldale-Collinsville game was our biggest disappointment. Our victory over Dan River in the closing seconds was our most exciting moment next to being number one in the Piedmont Dis- trict. I think we made a name for our school. 64 Football Travis Millner scores the winning touchdown against Dan River. The hands say itg we're number one in the Piedmont District.
