CLUBS, ORGANIZATIONS, CLASSES Quite a Few Changes better, we have new people with new ideas and that makes the paper better, said Link sponsor Patricia Koger. The Link has gone through quite a few changes. For the most part the year was one of rebuilding. Since only three people were still attending Laurel Park from the previous year, Terri Smith and Vivian Colvin the co-editors and Jeff Gauldin the assistant manag- ing editor. The photography was better this year, stemming from the use of a better camera and more cooperation from the 'yearbook staff. The paper was in years past put out by the Journalism ll class, but this year the two classes were combined. This allows the first year members to have a better look at how a paper is put out and they also have more of a chance to work on the paper, said Mrs. Koger. The Journalism Classes also put out the Lance, a newsletter to parents. The classes are taking a field trip to W.M.V.A. W.l-l.E.E. and the Martinsville Bulletin. The newspaper also spon- sored a library of college catalogues offering journalism as a major. This year the Science Club seemed only to have changed in membership. There were fewer members, but the same old traditions seemed to be satisfactory. This year as in years past, the monthly meetings con- sisted of experiments per- formed, field trips discussed and field trips planned. A bake sale was held this year to raise money for awards given to four and five year members and winners of the annual Science Fair which was held in the spring. CLUBS, ORGANIZATIONS AND CLASSES lnitiations Not So Embarrassing better the Spanish Club. Each year our club seems to be more active than the last, commented Mrs. Francis Leeper, the sponsor of the Spanish Club. This seems to be holding true, for the Spanish Club broadened its horizons this year. ln addition to the traditional ringing of the Salvation Army bell, the club also participated in the rock-n- roll jamboree, which was a drive for the Heart Fund, rais- ing almost S300.00. The Spanish Club visited Cave Spring High School in the fall to view a group of Spanish dancers that toured from Puerto Rico, and they visited Hollins College to watch several Spanish skits and dances. The annual fiesta was held April 24th and the traditional Spanish assembly was held during that week. Although participation dropped in D.E.C.A. this year, Christmas just wouldn't have been the same without them. Fundraising was one of the principal activities of the D.E.C.A. Club members sold Stuffed animals, Christmas wrapping paper, jewelry and various other nicknacks and collectables. Some of the money that the club raised was used for buy- ing flowers for Mrs. Hager and Mrs. Thomas who were both out of school for medical reasons. Twenty-five dollars was also contributed to the Thomas Fund. The club also spent some more money on a field trip to Virginia Tech where some members attended business meetings and competitions. The D.E.'ers also attended a Hokie football game. The F.H.A. was not as ac- tive as in years past stated sponsor Ann Chaney, but this was the first year a member of the F.H.A. has gone on to ma- jor in home economics. Janet Bryant, the president of the F.H.A. is going to major in home ec at Radford College. The club this year attended the Southern Living Christmas Mrs. Patricia Koger doctors on Robin Smith. ln addition to teaching journalism, Mrs. Koger also spon- sored the First Aid Team.
