Hankins, commented that although some of them were great, others were more difficult to perform and took a lot of practice. All the girls practiced more than previous squads. The practices started in the summer, said Mary Hodge, a senior member of the squad. We started practices in July and practiced throughout the rest of the summer. ln addi- tion to the summer practices, the Fronts practiced during sixth period every day, after school two to three times a week, and some- times on weekends. That is a lot of practice but it paid off for they received many com- The Fronts which consisted of fourteen pom-pon girls, eight majorettes, two feature twirlers, and soloist, Emily Helms, performed at pep rallies and took turns performing at basketball games. They performed with the marching band at football games and in the Christmas parade. They also traveled with them to the Richmond State Fair and to Thunder in the Blue Ridge.
