A 7-11 Big Gulp is enough for Janice Overton and Pam Morley. In contrast to the invading longer, straighter prep haircuts for girls, Janice and Pam have curly permanents which are still popular just as flannel shirts and Levi's are. On prom night the Lancer Look is sharp. Lighter tuxes seem to dominate for guys and simpler dresses for girls. Here seniors and their dates prepare to be introduced. Lisa Deese hands Chris Martin name cards, and Mervin Brown fsophomore hostl escorts Carol Elliason to the stage A Mrs. Susan Hershman has a stub- born one at the Faculty Donkey Basketball Game. Her donkey wouldn't move when she petted it, pulled on it, or screamed at it, In late summer, the band organizes and begins practice, here Tamika Hairston, Glenda Palmer, Lindy Fackler, Deidre l-lundley, and Jill Wilson try to get the steps correctly. On lhe football field the Lancer Look is a blue jersey and a white helmet for Brad Wilson. Khakis were S45. For the more frugal preps, the J.C. Penny fox was the animal on their chests. Wool was everywhere. Wool pocketbook covers, blazers, sweaters, pants and shirts were prep city. Wool sweaters got big initials monogrammed on them for girls while boys' Oxford shirts got block initials. There was no mistaking prep colors - kelly green, bright yellow, hot pink, fire engine red - and they were paired with navy and Khaki. Occasionally brave preps would wear their green and pink together. Hair for preps was different, too. A typical prep girl's hair was shoulder length and relatively straight or slightly curled. Guys' hair length moved up, shorter cuts above the ear were in. Musically, tastes were still very diverse. Donna Sumner, though no longer disco queen, was still a chart queen. Coming out with an early-Elvis soundalike song called Wanderer , she topped the charts. Her sound and that of many others was not as easily classified as disco, but was still danceable. A few new disco groups did appear though, Lipps Inc. among them. The new wave was New Wave. THE LANOEFZ LOOK 14 Side One

Groups like Blondie, who have always been new wave, were stronger than ever. The big New Wave hit, however, came from a group called Devo and was titled Whip lt. The Jacksons were hot on the soul charts. Gladys Knight and the Pips came out again under the direction ol Asford and Simpson. Diana Ross had two hits on her album produced by Chic in l'm Coming Out, and Upside Down. Barbra Streisand teamed up with Barry Gibb on her album, Guilty, much to critical dis- pleasure, but the single Woman ln Love, topped the charts. Bette Midler moved on her upsurging popularity with a zany showcase of her concert tour as a movie and a record called Divine Madness. Neil Diamond came out with a new movie The Jazz Singer, but his music sounded more and more pop. ln Rock and Boll, the names were ACXDC and Ted Nugent. The Doobie Brothers came out with a new album and their tour came through Greensboro and Ftoanoke and played to near sellout crowds. Perhaps the biggest hit of the year was Queens' Another One Bites the Dust. But it was country that more and more students were listening to - some for the first time - 3 . .z,,. wr, , A-'ff ,6 M- 'afv ir THE LANCER LOOK some more than before. Willie, Emmy Lou, Mickey Gilley, Tanya, Crystal Gayle, and of course Miss Dollie. People who didn't usually buy country, gave up S16 for the soundtrack to Urban Cowboy.' Movies - well, there was Fame, Somewhere in Time, Private Benjamin, Friday the 13th , Ordinary People, and The Blues Brothers. To capsule the preferences of Big Blue people, the Koine staff did the now traditional survey and the chart shows the top five in en- tertainment categories, but below the top was an interesting variety of others that made up the whole spectrum of Blue taste. Prep Is In for Lisa Landrum and Mitzi Prillaman. Their cotton fox shirts gave the gators close competition. They are sitting on JoJo Gillispie's lap. Side One
