Time Capsule 1981 To keep the Big Blue Tour in perspective, we give you what was happening outside the confines of the Laurel Park campus- The hostages came home - after 444 days of captivity, the nation was literally covered with yellow ribbons and Ronald Reagan's inauguration as the 4Oth president was almost overshadowed by their release. Red ribbons came next but this time the occasion was not a happy one. The red ribbons represented the unsolved murders of black children in Atlanta. Water - there wasn't much. If you went to Virginia Beach, you were asked to please not waste it. The drought pushed up food prices which added fuel to the country's inflationary rocket. Decontrol of oil prices finally happened, and by March regular gas cost as much as 51.28 a gallon. Afganistan was invaded by the Russians and Roland was threatened because of Polish labor unrest. Ralph Sampson led the Virginia Cavaliers to their first No. 1 ranking ever. Mt. St. Helens exploded with a force greater than an atomic bomb blast and all our technology could not stop the eruption. Prince Charles finally picked a wife and broke hearts all over the world. Jean l-larris proved that the Scarsdale Diet can be hazardous to your health. The United States did not attend the Moscow Summer Olympics. And Walter Cronkite said And that's the way it is for the last time. Ad 179
