Sophomore Class Officers Among the many happy experiences of moving into our new building we as students had one great regret that we could not bring Mr. William McKnight along with us. Mr. McKnight was our custodian fa' seventeen years at the East Brook Building, and a ine custodian was he. A fine friend to all of the students and teachers, a pride in his building, a faithful follower of all school activities were only a few of the many kind thing that we would like to remember him for. Most of the students at school think that they are men teaching sports. They are teaching sports but they are also maldng boys into men. They teach them responsibility, loyality, and to respect other people. Their job is not just teaching the student how to play the sport, but to make a better person out of him all the way around. Your coaches are like second parents, you could say. They find out things about you that other teachers never could find out. They're there when you need someone to talk to, about problems that you are a little afraid to talk to your parents about. You put a strong trust in them and in return you have one of the best friends you could ask for. Put all of this together you have the swellest guys in the world. Mr. Kost, in his first year at Laurel has all the right in the world to be proud of his ball team. When he first came here, we didn't lcnow very much about him or he didn't know much about us. The first two we eks of basketball practice went by them. One day he came in and laid the law down about rules. Only once or twice these rules were broken. All of our practices were kept well under control and well con- ducted by om' two coaches, Mr. Kost and Mr. Hassan. Mr. Kost said that we were going to win twelve or thirteen ball games or else. Well we only missed it by one, we won eleven. The students have every right in the world to be proud of their ball club. Best of luck to all of our coaches. We are also very proud of our Cheerleaders, who under the direction of Mrs. Giles won the Tri-County Cheering Trophy. Congratulations girls! January, 1958, found the Laurel FFA members all set for the Pennsylvania Farm Show, The demonstration team was composed of Wayne Patterson, Dale Booher, Edward Gorgaoz, and David Tomldns. The title of the demonsira- tion was Septic Sanitation. It showed how to properly install a home sewage system. The boys took second place at the Farm Show, highest any Laurel demonstration team had ever won in state wide compedtion. There were many requests for presentations after this: including State FFA Activities Week at University Park in June, the regional meeting of Sanitary Engineers at Butler, Lawrence County Farm Show, and other local showing at Granges, schools, and civic events. Also, at the Farm Show in January were Eddie Crawford and Tom Anderson in the State FFA Band. Dale Booher doubled in the State Band and in the demonstration. Right after the Farm Show the Lawrence-Beaver-Butler area project contest was held and Laurel came out with seven gold medal winners, ten silver, and twelve bronze awards. This contest was followed by the state wide project contest in which Lloyd Kildoo, John Sldba, and Joe Bodziach won silver awards and Robert Dean won a bronze medal. The Chapter Farmer degree was conferred upon those who qualified at Beaver Falls. The following twelve mem- bers :Erom La1u'el received this honor: George R. Dean, Robert Dean, Eddie Crawford, Glen Hunt, Glenn Park, John Wasserman, Joe Bodziach, Dale Booher, William Demmel, Dale Glenn, Edward Gorgacz, and Robert Kerr. February always brings National FFA Week and our Chapter participated by placing a window exhibit on safety in the Lawrence Savings and Trust Company bank. February is also the month for election of officers and the follow- ing were chosen by the members: President, Wayne Patterson, Vice-President, William Mayberry, Secretary, George R, Dean, Treasurer, Edward Gorgacz, Reporter, Eddie Crawford, Sentinel, Glenn Park, and Chaplain, Robert Dean. Our Adviser, Mr. Fox, received a surprise at an assembly program in February when he was chosen Teacher Of The Year In lawrence County and received an Oscar from the Lawrence Cormty Federated Women's Club. In March three members were very busy minding their biddies as they had entered the Chicken-of-Tommrow contest and were trying to get their entries to gain as much as possible. Wayne Patterson, George Dean, and Donald White all made creditable showings at the contest in Butler, but did not win the top awards. About the middle of March our two student teachers arrived from the Pennsylvania State University. During the nine weeks that Tom Kelly and Duane Duncan were with us a very warm and lasting friendship developed, in fact Mr. Dru1can's friendship extended to the opposite sex and before the year was over he had taken a girl from our community to be his wife. Two of our members were elected to office in the Lawrence-Beaver-Butler Area FFA, Eddie Crawford having been chosen as Vice-President and Joe Bodziach as Sentinel. They attended meetings every month, usually at Portersville High School. April was Father-Mother-Son dinner month. About 160 attended the dinner and program at the East Brook Grange Hall. Twelve Laurel FFA members spoke, relating our activities and accomplishments, and Edward Gorgacz gave a talk on Sanitation that he used in the district public speaking contest. The state vice-president of the FFA, Philip Lehman, of Somerset was present and spoke briefly.. Rev. Pat Albright was the main spealcer of the evening, talking on the Spirit of Adventure . Howard Mickley and Sam McCracken, along with Mr. Fox, showed slides of their trip to the National FFA Convention at Kansas City, Missouri, where they received the Gold Emblem award on behalf of the Chapter. Honorary degrees were conferred at the dinner upon' Mr. Glenn Patterson and Mr. U. A. Dean. A Citation was given to the Superior Sand Company for their co-operation with the FFA and was received by Michael and Marion Audia. In the Area FFA Round-Up, Laurel was successful in retaining the R. D. Walter plaque, the score being 159 points for laurel and 90 for the second place school, thirteen schools competing. Our members placed among the top ten in every one of the twelve contests. The softball game and horse-shoe tournament were washed out because of rain. Laurel won the area Parlimentary Procedure contest because of lack of competition, and placed third in the district contest at Washington, Pennsylvania. During the month the Chapter was planting trees and selling vegetable seeds and plants to earn money for their various activities. The first of May found the Chapter members rolling toward Erie on a bus on their annual tour. Stops were made at Polk where the members were given a conducted tour of the barns and some buildings of the Polk State School. Chapter members received a vivid lesson on mental health. The second stop was at Windy Ridge Dairy Farm, where a very elaborate dairy operation was viewed. The group then moved on to Titusville for lunch and a tour of the Dra.ke Oil Well and park. During the afternoon the members toured the fruit country around Northeast in Erie County, Presque Isle State Park, and other points of interest. After dinner in Erie, the members saw the film The Ten Commandments, before returning home. At Commencement exercises it was announced that Howard Mickley had won the FFA Scholarship plaque and that John Skiba had been chosen for the DeKalb award. At an FFA sponsored assembly program near the close of school, George Schaedeli an exchange student from Swiizerland played a guitar and spoke to the student body. In June, eleven Laurel FFA members made the -trip to Penn State for FFA Week activities. The four demonsiration team members gave two presentations of Septic Sanitation. Wayne Patterson and Glenn Park sang in the FFA chorus, Eddie Crawford, Ronald Strobel, and Dale Booher, played in the state FFA band, and Bill Mayberry was entered in the agronomy contest and also pitched horseshoes, winning second in the state. John Skiba was entered in the poultry contest and received an honorable mention award. Bill Lyons and David Mirrteer participated in the agronomy contest. At the Smcrgasbord, Harlansburg, Wayne Patterson was awarded the County farmer degree along with several other FFA members from Lawrence, Beaver, and Butler counties. This honor was for Wayne Patterson's outstanding leadership, farming program, and co-operation in community affairs. In additi.on to the regular FFA meeting in July, the oficers attended the Area Leadership Training School held in Brady Spring Park, near Mercer, and several attended the Holstein Field Day at the John Benson farm. August was a busy month for FFA members, many participated in the lawrence County Farm Show and George Dean showed his Jersey heifer at the District Dairy Show at Meadville. Two dairy and two livestock judging teams participated at the Stoneboro Fair Judging contests winning lst, 4th, 5th, 9th places. With September and the opening of school, Mr. Wilbert I-lershberger, a senior in agricultural education at the Pennsylvania State University spent two weeks with us in observation teaching. The Chapter members were busy drawing up a new program of work budget, and the FFA calendar. Then there were 14 Greenhands to be initiated, FFA calendar ads to sell, and Christmas cards to select for selling later. The Greenhands initiated were: Jim Baldwin, Donald Cade, Wayne Dean, Charles Harlan, Robert Hill, Dick Jones, William Jones, Pat Malone, Tom Mitchell, William Nimmo, David Wagner, Bill Walton, Lynn White, and Richard Young. ln October a letter was received from Mr. James C, Fink, State FFA Adviser, informing us that Laurel had again been awarded the Gold Emblem award, for the second consecutive year by the National Association. Plans were made for the President, Wayne Patterson and Secretary, George Dean along with the adviser, Mr. Fox to fly to Kansas City, Missotui to receive the award. When they returned, an assembly program was held and they related their experiences and showed slides of the trip. William Mayberry, having withdrawn from school, John Wasserman was elected vice -president in his stead. Christmas card sales were now in full swing. The Chapter again entered a Boat in the Laurel Community Halloween parade and many members helped to stage the parade. Fa: the Hrst time a group of members formed a marching unit and won a rpize. The theme of the float was the new Laurel community and featured the new school as the center of the three townships in the union district. ln November the demonstration team was selected to present Farm Ponds . Many members helped to construct the demonstration, Eddie Crawford and Betty Penjamin worked hard to paint a background, and Jim Baldwin, William Strobel, Robert Kerr, and William Lyons were selected to have the speaking parts. After several local showings the boys captured first place and a S50 prize in the western Pennsylvania District contest and at the Farm Show in Harrisburg they won seventh place. David Emery won honor for the Chapter and a purebred Angus steer for himself by bulldozing a Braham calf at the calf-scramble held in connection with the Pemasylvanla Livestock Exposition. Bud St:robel was also accepted from the Laurel Chapter to participate in the scramble but his winnings was the trip to the Exposition and rodeo held in connection with it. Glenn Park was selected to represent the Lawrence -Beaver-Butler area as its official delegate at the state FFA meeting held in connection with the Farm Show. Dale Booher and Eddie Crawford were selected for the state FFA band. In the area project contest Laurel won many gold, silver, and bronze awards and the top books were sent to the state contest. Winners on the state level were George Dean, Bradford Kuentz, David Emery, Dale Booher, and John Wassermana Following the closing of the farming program record books those members who qualified for the second or Chapter F armer degree were initiated at Slippery Rock, February 4. The successful candidates were Charles Mazur, William Lyons, David Jones, David DeSalvo, William Dicks, David Emery, James Frew, and Donald White. In February the Chapter invited Tom Kelly, IF GY exchange student and former student teacher at Laurel back for a talk at an assembly program. Mr. Kelly showed pictures of his stay with farmers in France and his travels in Switzerland, Italy, and the Worlds Fair at Brussels, Belgium. Glenn Park was honored by being selected as the outstanding FFA boy in the county for 1958 and the Pomona Grange presented him with a cash award. As February drew to a close, new officers were elected as follows: President, Dale Booher, Vice -President, Joe Bodziachg Secretary, William Lyons, Treasure, Robert Kerr, Reporter, William Dicks, Sentinel, David Jones, and Chaplain, David Emery. As the agricultural room was not entirely completed the Erst meeting in the new building was held in the gym- nasium on March 3, 1959. The main item of business was the installation of the new offices. Members are now looking forward to the a.rrival of the two student teachers, March 16. They are to be Gerald G. Berkey and Leonard V. Johnson. FFA BAND Eddie Crawford Dale Booher EQ I 'Wm Q 4? .- Z!! N T hw NW un W x hw wr x 101 :muwiiw ,,,. m,,,,,1,:'-,!.,:x d N1 ,, 'x 1 1-fWS:xx:gs,.
