The frontier attracted the restless, the unconventional, and the independent of spirit. Society prized individualism and insisted that a man be judged by what he accomplished. Today the same situation prevails. America believes, as does no other nation, that edu- cation must be available to all and that those who have the ability have the obligation to continue their education in order to prepare for positions of leader- ship which education, and not social position, open to them. Education is not just a luxury, but a neces- sity, without which -a person is defenseless in this industrialized society. The individual enters high school with many as- pirationsg he makes plans for his future. He attends classes, broadening his knowledge and sharing his ideas with the class. He participates in activities and makes lasting friendships. At graduation the student leaves here to go on to further study or to learn by practical experience.
