Students participate in a dialogue which familiarizes them with the spoken language. FGREIGN LAN UAGES Because of the increased amount of travel today, the importance of foreign languages cannot be overem- phasized. The study of foreign languages includes not only the ability to speak and write the language, but also an understanding of the native country, its people, and culture. Our ability to speak with other peoples may promote world tolerance and peace. The Prince George's County Board of Education is sponsoring a Culture Club, which is planning a 30- day tour of Europe for interested members. Laurel High has shown an enthusiastic response. 47

JOURNALI Assisting the school newspaper staff, members of the journalism class study the techniques of collecting and reporting news. The course helps the individual to develop his creative talents. A column entitled Laurel Highlights is featured in the News Leader to keep the town informed about school events. LIBR RY An important part of the individual's training is learning to use the library facilities. As a part of the English classes library period enables the student to explore the works of the literary scholars. The library is open from 8:30 to 41:00 so that students may take advantage of the reference materials. T. Olivito prepares an assignment in library. 46 Members of the Journalism class prepare articles for the newspaper. Modern equipment is employed to facilitate better reading habits. READI G Speed and comprehension are the key words to reading success. Reading instruction includes Work in the areas of vocabulary, accurate audit-ory and visual perception and discrimination, as well as efficiency in study skills and habits. These classes help the in- dividual improve the skills essential to understand school materials.

Donna and Mike look at the map during their United States History class. Maps play an important part in the study of geography. SGCIAL 5. Mr. 48 Jenkins gives his World History class a quiz. STUDIE The social studies program provides for the under- standing, skills, and values that make a good citizen. These courses, including world history, United States history, world geography, and problems of democarcy, are intended to familiarize students with the history, laws, customs, and economy of the United States and other nations. Through experiences and study, the individual develops an understanding of his rights and responsibilities as a member of society. Students in the fourth period P. O. D. class view the bulletin board and the many posters.
