CLI H Few things that the student acquires in school are as important as the ability to speak and Write effectively. Success comes to the person who has at his command the words he needs and the necessary knowledge to use them. O'ne's ideas are of little. practical importance unless he can express them clearly. Correct and pre- cise speech is a social and business asset. Five seniors, E. Carr, S. Watts, S. Ross, O. Schlosser, and T. Stiles attend the English Seminar held monthly at Northwestern High School. The program includes lectures by college professors.

Ted Atkinson lectures to a Business Math class. MATHEMATIC Mathematics has often been called the uQueen of Sciencei' because it plays an important part in the work of every science. Mathematics in its various branches is even more important in our daily lives. As evidence that Laurel High is keeping pace with the new approaches in education, ia system of pro- grammed learning has been instituted this year. Mathematics,77 says Bertrand Russell, takes us into a region of the absolute necessity, to which not only the actual world, but every possible world must conforrnf, Senior students experiment with programmed learning mate- rials. L. Rumford explains logic to the algebra class. Miss Myerly's Algebra II class learns the mysteries of the slide rule.

Students listen as R. Wilson gives a speech to persuade. Tracy, Helen, David and Sandy do a radio play in Speech. PEECH Leaders are speakersg speakers are leaders? In speech the individual learns to overcome the obstacles he faces when speaking before a group. Poise, voice control, and posture are among some of the requisites for an effective speaker. DRAM TIC Emotions personifredi' The dramatics class devotes its time to learning the essentials of play production which include basic acting techniques, stage settings, make-up and pantomine. Demonstrating their efforts and talents, the class presented alt Happened One Nightf, a three-act comedy. Behind the scenes make-up is a very important part of any production. 45
