Ted Atkinson lectures to a Business Math class. MATHEMATIC Mathematics has often been called the uQueen of Sciencei' because it plays an important part in the work of every science. Mathematics in its various branches is even more important in our daily lives. As evidence that Laurel High is keeping pace with the new approaches in education, ia system of pro- grammed learning has been instituted this year. Mathematics,77 says Bertrand Russell, takes us into a region of the absolute necessity, to which not only the actual world, but every possible world must conforrnf, Senior students experiment with programmed learning mate- rials. L. Rumford explains logic to the algebra class. Miss Myerly's Algebra II class learns the mysteries of the slide rule.

Chemistry students apply their knowledge during a lab period. 42 SCIENCE Because science is based upon common sense, every individual can be a scientist. Facts and principles or rules which are used to explain what you know and to help you discover what you still don,t know, make up the heart of science. Courses in biology, chemistry, and physics enable the Laurel High student to in- crease his understanding of his surroundings. For individuals especially interested in the field of science, Laurel High has an annual science fair and invites students to attend various science symposiums held throughout the area. Physics students determine the mechanical advantage and efficiency of pulley systems.

Senior English students listen attentively as Mrs. Stanton explains the details of diagraming. 44 .5 Library period gives students the chance to read for enjoyment. CLI H Few things that the student acquires in school are as important as the ability to speak and Write effectively. Success comes to the person who has at his command the words he needs and the necessary knowledge to use them. O'ne's ideas are of little. practical importance unless he can express them clearly. Correct and pre- cise speech is a social and business asset. Five seniors, E. Carr, S. Watts, S. Ross, O. Schlosser, and T. Stiles attend the English Seminar held monthly at Northwestern High School. The program includes lectures by college professors.
