The frontier attracted the restless, the unconventional, and the independent of spirit. Society prized individualism and insisted that a man be judged by what he accomplished. Today the same situation prevails. America believes, as does no other nation, that edu- cation must be available to all and that those who have the ability have the obligation to continue their education in order to prepare for positions of leader- ship which education, and not social position, open to them. Education is not just a luxury, but a neces- sity, without which -a person is defenseless in this industrialized society. The individual enters high school with many as- pirationsg he makes plans for his future. He attends classes, broadening his knowledge and sharing his ideas with the class. He participates in activities and makes lasting friendships. At graduation the student leaves here to go on to further study or to learn by practical experience. ,s Q Wg Q N3 Q ,GgagQ?f,W ,giigig 553535. 4, Z 9235533335 2iff'w21l?53z5?i55AQ?qZ?2i5W iii? Facts and principles or rules which are used to explain what you know and to help you discover what you still don,t know, make up the heart of science. Courses in biology, chemistry, and physics enable the Laurel High student to in- crease his understanding of his surroundings. For individuals especially interested in the field of science, Laurel High has an annual science fair and invites students to attend various science symposiums held throughout the area. Physics students determine the mechanical advantage and efficiency of pulley systems. Ted Atkinson lectures to a Business Math class. MATHEMATIC Mathematics has often been called the uQueen of Sciencei' because it plays an important part in the work of every science. Mathematics in its various branches is even more important in our daily lives. As evidence that Laurel High is keeping pace with the new approaches in education, ia system of pro- grammed learning has been instituted this year. Mathematics,77 says Bertrand Russell, takes us into a region of the absolute necessity, to which not only the actual world, but every possible world must conforrnf, Senior students experiment with programmed learning mate- rials. L. Rumford explains logic to the algebra class. Miss Myerly's Algebra II class learns the mysteries of the slide rule. Senior English students listen attentively as Mrs. Stanton explains the details of diagraming. 44 .5 Library period gives students the chance to read for enjoyment. CLI H Few things that the student acquires in school are as important as the ability to speak and Write effectively. Success comes to the person who has at his command the words he needs and the necessary knowledge to use them. O'ne's ideas are of little. practical importance unless he can express them clearly. Correct and pre- cise speech is a social and business asset. Five seniors, E. Carr, S. Watts, S. Ross, O. Schlosser, and T. Stiles attend the English Seminar held monthly at Northwestern High School. The program includes lectures by college professors. Students listen as R. Wilson gives a speech to persuade. Tracy, Helen, David and Sandy do a radio play in Speech. PEECH Leaders are speakersg speakers are leaders? In speech the individual learns to overcome the obstacles he faces when speaking before a group. Poise, voice control, and posture are among some of the requisites for an effective speaker. DRAM TIC Emotions personifredi' The dramatics class devotes its time to learning the essentials of play production which include basic acting techniques, stage settings, make-up and pantomine. Demonstrating their efforts and talents, the class presented alt Happened One Nightf, a three-act comedy. Behind the scenes make-up is a very important part of any production. 45 JOURNALI Assisting the school newspaper staff, members of the journalism class study the techniques of collecting and reporting news. The course helps the individual to develop his creative talents. A column entitled Laurel Highlights is featured in the News Leader to keep the town informed about school events. LIBR RY An important part of the individual's training is learning to use the library facilities. As a part of the English classes library period enables the student to explore the works of the literary scholars. The library is open from 8:30 to 41:00 so that students may take advantage of the reference materials. T. Olivito prepares an assignment in library. 46 Members of the Journalism class prepare articles for the newspaper. Modern equipment is employed to facilitate better reading habits. READI G Speed and comprehension are the key words to reading success. Reading instruction includes Work in the areas of vocabulary, accurate audit-ory and visual perception and discrimination, as well as efficiency in study skills and habits. These classes help the in- dividual improve the skills essential to understand school materials. B. Fujii and O. Schlosser record in the booths while other members of the French IV class practice the lesson with earphones. Student teacher, Mrs. Kline, and Spanish ll class study Spanish grammar. Students participate in a dialogue which familiarizes them with the spoken language. FGREIGN LAN UAGES Because of the increased amount of travel today, the importance of foreign languages cannot be overem- phasized. The study of foreign languages includes not only the ability to speak and write the language, but also an understanding of the native country, its people, and culture. Our ability to speak with other peoples may promote world tolerance and peace. The Prince George's County Board of Education is sponsoring a Culture Club, which is planning a 30- day tour of Europe for interested members. Laurel High has shown an enthusiastic response. 47 Donna and Mike look at the map during their United States History class. Maps play an important part in the study of geography. SGCIAL 5. Mr. 48 Jenkins gives his World History class a quiz. STUDIE The social studies program provides for the under- standing, skills, and values that make a good citizen. These courses, including world history, United States history, world geography, and problems of democarcy, are intended to familiarize students with the history, laws, customs, and economy of the United States and other nations. Through experiences and study, the individual develops an understanding of his rights and responsibilities as a member of society. Students in the fourth period P. O. Art classes offer the creative student an 'opportunity to project his ideas. Art is an important part of our cultural background and leads to an appreciation of the finer things in life. Everyone is creative to a degree. The degree is dependent upon many factors. but the main factor is MUSIC The music education program provides opportuni- ties for individuals to develop an appreciation of music and to gain experiences in both individual and group activities. Students develop socially, intellectually, emotionally, and creatively through music. Because students do not respond alike, a program of varied activities has been arranged. As a fine art, music helps young people to develop an awareness of beauty. It is an effective means of communication of emotions, ideas, and images. RT experience. Experience in art must be as varied as the materials used. The aims of art education include teaching the individual awareness of the world around him and teaching him to express what he sees, feels, and thinks in his own Way and through many art media. R. Hand, P. Whitehead, E. Brookrnan, J. Ingram, W. Beard, and G. Gardner admire a product of the art class. HO E ECONO IC The Home Economics program is designed to help students to develop and exercise competencies in family care and management. lnstruction is provided in the areas of foods and nutrition, handicrafts, child care, health and safety, housing, home care of the sick, home management, and relationships within the family. The well-being of our communities and of the world depends upon the well-being of the family. No experience so permanently affects the individual as that within the home. From the home, the individual gains the deep-seated ideals that determine his growth and help him to achieve a happy, wholesome life. The family continues to be the basis of our society. E. INDUSTRI L RT The Industrial Education program reflects the liberal and practical approach to the meeting of individual needs. The structure of offerings and the manner in which these offerings are taught enable the learner to increase his understanding of himself in his relation to productive Work. Through the disciplines of in- dustrial education, there is a gain in insight into the problems and processes of the production of goods. Students develop a sensitivity to quality and the ability to think creatively. D. Turney, R. Wittek, S. Turney, and C.
