Phill Garnett, vice-principal , was the victim of senior Joe Goss at a Laurel-Hardin basketball game. When the ordeal came to an end, Mr. Garnett commented, The pie definitely tasted good. As for Joe Goss, he stated, Hie shot was a direct hit. The minute I let it fly, I knew he was dead meat. This was just one example of the fine spirit that the LHS faculty exhibited throughout the entire year. Teachers this year have become much more involved than in years past. Some teachers attribute this to the fact that there are so many new teachers that are eager to push school spirit at LHS. There are always teachers who dress up for the spirit days, participate in the fun activities, and just have an ’O-tay’ attitude toward school life. They are the number one teachers to have, said student body president Erica Cantrell. The teachers that are involved are the ones that are the most fun to be around—take Mrs. Little, for instance. Besides the fun and good times that teachers and students share, there is a serious side to our LHS faculty. They are always giving us the mind-boggling tests, lecturing us to become respectful citizens, and reminding us that we are the best and should continue to set and strive for our goals. Someday, math and science teachers may look upon a designer of a space vehicle and say, That was my student. Teachers of the arts will feel pride in knowing they are installing their students with the culture that has lived so long. Those who teach social studies and English realize they are doing their part in preparing the future leaders of this country. All in all, teachers at LHS are the good, the bad, and definitely the ugly! Ahhhh! Joe will miss j j j j SPLAT 1!!1 me by a mile. TROPICAL PARADISE IV Many students filled the LHS gym to make Tropical Paradise a smash for the fourth consecutive year. The dance began at 9:00 with Experiment supplying the music. The students were seen doing the hula, limbo, and many other kinds of fancy footsteps. A variety of fruits and beverages were supplied by the choir department. Those included were everyones f avor i tes; bananas, coconut, and apples. The hula dancers and their dates left with fading tropical tans and many memories of Paradise IV. A.J. Wetch, Vicki Fox, and. Graffiti is everywhere! It is found on desk tops, bathroom walls, notebook covers, Zimmerman Trail and.. .license plates! Personalized license plates seem to be the trend at LBS. Every other car spotted in the parking lot is identified by something other than just numbers. Why do people have personalized plates? My best friend gave them to me for my birthday. Everybody calls me NEY and that’s why she put it on my plates, Courtney Stem said. Eric Kraft has FLYIN BY on his plates because it’s original and I’m always passing people. Others just want to let people know it is their car by using personal expressions such as For Me, BOYS 323,” MY82T0Y, MY Z28, and GARS TRK. Nicknames are a favorite, also, like STREEK, LUD,” JAmiN, and MULDUNE.” Applicants choose three names they would like to put on their plates. If their first choice is unavailable, then they get their second or third choice. The initial cost is $20 more than the regular price and every year after that it is $5 more. So the next time you are driving, you better keep your eyes on the road and quit trying to figure out what IMAEEKR on the car in front of you means or you will need one yourself. ■ • V- • ) L ; r ' - It's a shady situation for Ronnie Gaskill. There are many clubs at Laurel High School, 25 to be exact, and several of them are new this year. The Heavenly Devils, under the supervision of Mr. Russell, help make visiting teams comfortable during their visits to our school. VICA, Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, is also a new club this year. Its advisors are Mr. Elton and Mr. Schaff. Mrs. Olson is in charge of Creative Writing, which publishes a book of students’ best work at the end of the year. SADD, started two years ago, has Mr. Asher as its advisor. The group’s goal is to eradicate drinking and driving. Computer Club, under the supervision of Mr. Jury, offered locker posters, banners, and greeting cards sis a fund-raising idea. This club was also new at LHS. Besides these new clubs, there are still the old standbys for clubs and organizations at LHS; Student Council and Pep Club are as strong as ever. ACTIVITIES 61 ♦¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ Aline from Holland the Schmidt year through Exchange Students Beat Culture Shock” Elgersma came to stay with family for a a foreign- exchange program, even though she haul already graduated from a school in Holland. I thought that this would be an ideal thing to do for a year; just kind of take a year off to kick back and see the world, she said. But this was not just a ane time decision. I wanted to go the year before this, but my parents thought that I was too young to leave home. So when this year rolled around, I brought out all the material I had saved from last year and finally convinved them to agree with me! Aline gxclaimed.____________________ Many things are different in Holland and Aline sometimes suffered from a little culture shock. In Holland, there is no drinking age and she used to go to bars with her friends. But there, she pointed out, we did not go just to get drunk. If someone did that, we would just ignore them for the night. The same type of culture shock hit Sonja Dionysius from Germany when she came to Laurel. We essentially do the same things you do here on Saturday nights, she said, driving around and stuff like that. But one thing she really enjoys about living here is the closeness her host family, the Besels, showa.----------------------- Even though this is not Sonja’s first time to the United States (she traveled here with her father three or four times), she still believes that in no other way could she have experienced firsthand the things that have happened to her since she came here. I have done so many great things--joining cross-country, for example— that are not allowed in schools in Germany that I really hope that others will be able to do the same things I have. And with testimonials like this from our two f ore ign-exchange students, Laurel should be able to receive several more. They not only enrich their own lives, but those of the students of LHS._______ 62 ACTIVITIES Ron Wyant, alias Permasmurfshows his curlers. us Spanish answers the Angie Proctor gets the way—via Cory Hennek' easy Clockwise from top: Kurt Markegard stands with his vehicle and private chauffeur. ACTIVITIES 63 F€CT 4II YOUTHFUL TEAM GAINS EXPERIENCE Even though the LHS football squad has had it tough the last two seasons, head coach Karl Matson feels that next year will be the time to reach the top. Matson felt the coaching staff was great. They did the best they could with such a youthful team. Next year they will be tougher and ready to dominate. The eastern division will consist of: Laurel, Billings Central, Hardin, Colstrip, Glendive, Sidney, Miles City, and Glasgow. Hie change was made to cut down on travel and expenses. Many of the players felt it weis an extremely tough season because of their inexperience. They feel it will be an outstanding season next year because they have learned from their mistakes. They have been the underdogs the last couple of years and next season they are hoping to bring the first-place trophy home. The Laurel girls basketball team played in a very tough conference this year and ended with a 5-15 record. Even though they won only a few games new coach, Lee Deming, built spirit and made the girls work hard. They had an inexperienced team with with only four seniors and no one with varsity experience. The team started out with a 3-3 record but since injuries and illnesses couldn't be helped, the record dropped. It was a frustrating year but the girls learned a lot about themselves. Coach Deming said he also learned new things about himself. He is looking forward to next year because he now has some girls with varsity experience. Coach Deming also said he sincerely appreciated all the hard work and effort from everyone, especially the seniors. The final record of the JV team was 7-10 and Freshman, 11-8. Laurel 0pp. 29 Bigs. We've got. Just what you're looking for--cro9S-oonnt.ry ! .-. it all! Cro33-count.ry is a lot more than running. It i t a challenge; a sport that, gives yon confidence and determination. The runners are taught t.o set. and reach goals. Our goal was t.o be in the top five at state; the boys took fourth and I he girls took third, commented coach Sprigler. Running is a team effort as well as an individual quest for victory. The individuality comes from the hard work and time each athlete puts into it. The runner alone makes the choice t.o do better. You gain self-respect and a feeling of accomplishment, when you are a runner, girls' cross-country coach Wetzel stated. This sport also involves team effort. The runners work together, cheer each other on when they feel like giving up, and maybe even earn a medal. This leads to close friendships that last a lifetime. Cross- :cur.try is a lot of work, but that doesn’t step the runners from having a little fun. The senior guys enjoyed initiating the underclassmen and strapping Travis Riemann to a bench with athletic tape along with teasing the junior high girls that ran with them. The giris' memories include the Christinas and end-cf-the-yesr part at Mrs. Wetzel’s house, telling stories in the weight room, learning German from Sonja Dionysius, and aggravating the guys by constantly jamming to Twist and Shout. Cross-country involves a lot of time, effort, and determination, but it all pays off with fun, friendships, and crossing the finish line. L to R: Pete Schultz, Joel Boehnke, Jamie Vanden Hoek, Chad Peterson and Steve Willis wait for the coach on awards night. Pays Off for WRESTLERS!! Being an outstanding wrestler doesn’t come easy. It takes an extreme uinount of hard work and dedication. For senior Rob iiask i 1 1 , the hard work and dedication payed off. Rob became Laurel's first three-time state champion when he took the top spot at the Class A 3tnte tournament in the 126 lb. bracket. Gaskili, Travis Carpenter, and the entire wrestling team broke a total of six school records, with Rob breaking fourrmost high school wins(109), most pins in high school(83), most takedowns in high school(141), and the fastest pin of :10 seconds. Carpenter now holds the record of most takedowns in a season with 51, wiping away Rob Gaskill's old record of 39. The most impressive new school record set was the team record of 13 wins, 1 lose and 0 ties. The key to the total success was not only the excellent cheerleading squad but also the teams dedication. We could not. have accomplished what we did without the team pulling together and working as a unit, stated Coach Sprigler. Although the team won the conference trophy i t placed a disappointing third at subdiviaionals and fourth at state. Coach Sprigler commented that the season caine to a disappointing ending, but next year's squad will definitely be a state champion -team. Laurel Finishes Second at Divisionals; Fifth at State The Locomotives were an exciting team to watch. They definately had the attention of the crowd throughout the whole season. In every game, they played hard right up to the very end and often won or lest in the last few minutes. The good thing about Montana basketball is that you can threw the season out when you go to tournament, Coach Bruce Robertson commented. The team was seeded ninth going into Divisionals, but that didn't intimidate them. They won their first game against number three, Havre, and went on to defeat Sidney and Livingston, which put them in the championship game. Unfortunately, they fell short of the Divisional title by losing to Lew-istown. Nonetheless, they took second place and were off to state. Coach Robertson thought the key to going to State was that the seniors were willing to do what had to be done and didn't worry about personal glory. Trainmen beat the Belgrade Panthers in their first game at the State Tournament in Butte. Their next two games were close, losing to Hardin in overtime and to Libby by a single free throw All their hard work and persistence rewarded them with fifth place. With only four seniors graduating this year, the upcoming years of basketball at LHS should be as exciting as this one has been. The Freshmen(18-3), JV(6-11) and B-Squad(13-4) also have promising teams for the future. Top: The Locomotives show off their second place trophy at Divisionals. Della Redli, who was voted most valuable and inspirational player, has been offered a full ride scholarship to Dickinson State College in North Dakota. This is the first player from Laurel to recieve such high honors. Coach Jim Maiin is proud of the progress and determination of the girls. The turning point of the season was when we played Central here. Even though we lost the game, they worked together as a team and played their best on both offense and defense. commented Coach Maiin. He believes that school spirit and community support will help make a strong team in the years to come and hopes volleyball will be recognized as the fun and competitive sport that it is. TENNIS 85 No titles or trophies were taken home, but considering Laurel has only established tennis for two years, the showing this season was excellent. Laurel did not qualify anyone to the state tournament, but they played top-notch matches and will give the eastern division a run for their money next year. The girls were competing against the toughest teams in the state and showed great potential for next season. Head coach Linda Campbell was really pleased with the team’s progress from the beginning of the season and feels that each player improved 110%. The team consisted of Becky Heiser, first singles; Colleen Gardner, second singles; Rhonda Morrissey, third singles; and senior Linda Smarsh, fourth singles. The doubles teams were made up of Brenda Fischer Beth Gould, first, and Ellen Brice Crystal Conover, second. Rhonda Morrissey goes for a low backhand. Shaw Hackmann earned individual honors by taking first place at the state tournament held at Fairmont Hot Springs. Tracy Pfaff was the leader of the girl’s team with an overall eleventh-place finish after losing a play-off for ninth place. Mom and Dad DON'T FORGET TO SMILE You wake up late only to find it is raining outside. When you finally get the energy to crawl out of bed to take a shower, you find your sister has used all the hot water. So forget the shower!! Find some clothes scattered all over the floor. Get dressed and crawl to the kitchen for some long awaited Cocoa Pebbles, but wait!! There's NO MILK!! So forget the Cocoa Pebbles and make some toast. But the toast bums because you fell asleep waiting for it to pop up. So forget breakfast!! Head for your clunker in the driveway and go through the daily routine of trying to get it started. After a half hour of cussing it out, it doesn’t start. So forget the car!! Walk the two mile hike uphill in the rain to school. Arrive at school an hour late only to find that you forgot... it's picture day!! Just when you think the day should be forgotten completely there it is... yeah...a SMILE beaming right at you. The only thing to do is smile back and maybe even laugh a little bit. After all, worse things could happen, RIGHT? A smile is a present anyone can give another person. It is compact, easy to assemble and costs nothing. The greatest advantage is the smile returned. It only takes a second so DON'T FORGET...SMILE!! How To Get Extra Smileage 1. Smile when you don't feel like it. 2. Share only positive thoughts. 3. Smile with your whole face. 4. Turn your frown upside down. 5. Exercise your sense of humor. 6. Smile our loud. 7. What color is your nose? BROWNNOSING. Does that ring a bell? Most of you have heard that phrase before. Some of you on the other hand may be thinking, what does that mean? The most common definition is buttering up a teacher. A teacher, for example, may ask his her class a question. One certain person might always try to answer the questions all the time. This will eventually lead to a discussion and most definitely spark a conversation between the person standing up in front of the classroom and the student. We all know teachers like to discuss with the class rather than lecture all of the time. So naturally they start thinking, Hey this kid has it together. By this time the rest of the class is probably slouching in their desks thinking, give me a break! If the kid is really getting to you just casually say, Hey Joe, what is that on your nose? It looks kind of brown. If the kid has any brains at all he will know exactly what you are talking about. Brown-nosers are either the smarter people who have it all together or the less clever ones in the group who try and act like they have it together. Did you ever see anyone in any of your classes who carried out these actions? Sometimes they can do some pretty stupid stuff to get on a teacher's good side. But hey, who ever said there was anything really wrong with it? We all graduated didn't we? THANKS 113 DAVE’S (conoco) ‘Best Auto Service in Town” 202 E. HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR WEEKEND? Waking up with a smile and a little bundle of energy the realization appears that it must be a Friday. As the day goes by it seems like it takes forever while you wait anxiously for all those plans you have been making to be fulfilled. People with first dates sit all day anticipating and hoping that their dreams may come true. D-I-N-N-N-G ! It's 3:25 p.m. and school is finally out. Rushing home and skipping dinner is common for a Friday night because that time is used to get ready for the special night. All the sweat and pain at athletic practices during the week is exhibited on weekends to other schools. When involved in school activities like basketball, football, cross-country, and volleyball even when there's tough times the spectator: can make them smoother by being there and supporting the teams. Working either at stores or grease factories, weekends are a perfect time fo many hours and bigger paychecks to spend later. When it's cold and snowy and not much going on up town weekends consist of many video parties. Watching the latest humor or terror shows with friends make even the coldest weekend seem a little warmer or cuddling up with someone special sipping on hot chocolate in front of a blazing fire is an all-time winter favorite. The most popular weekend activity is cruising around with friends laughing, having a good time and of course)causing a little trouble. Catch Telephone Craze It is fact that some students talk more on the telephone in one night than they talk to their family during the same amount of time. Telephones in most homes constantly ring off the hook between 4 and 11 p.m. Approximately 250 students here at LHS call out on the phone up to three times daily. This means that there are about 100 students talking on the phone every half hour. One particularly shocking fact is that 36 per cent of the calls make are to parents, siblings and other relatives. Isn't that amazing. Most people think teenagers only talk to other teenagers on the phone. It must not be so. However, there is usually a higher percentage of phone calls when the romantic season hits. More boyfriends and girlfriends are called than just friends. Over half of the student body claim they have made a prank or obscene phone call. 10 per cent of the students claim they receive prank phone calls regularly. Telephones are instruments used as a way of communicating with others. So when you are home and bored with nothing to do, pick up the phone and catch the telephone craze! 118 THANKS Chevron TERRY’S QUIK STOP HUNTING FISHING LICENSES AMMUNITION • BAIT • TACKLE GROCERIES • ICE • BEER • WINE LAUREL, MONTANA Share Good Times With Good Friends Rick Bence, Courtney Stem, Jerrae Brown, and Jeff Anderson fuel up at Terry's. Why do most kids go to school? Is it really to get a good education or do they just want to get in on all the fun? Besides receiving an education high school is good times with good friends. But wasn't there one special friend through those four years? Maybe it is someone from the very first grade that is close to you. Think about when everybody goes their separate way. These friends will really be missed! But the end of your high school career is not the end of your friendship for a friendship lasts forever. THANKS TO MY BEST FRIEND I was alone and bewildered before you came along. You directed me in a positive way and helped me learn right from wrong. You taught me to like myself and sorted out my mind. Even when I'm upset or angry you have always been kind. When my other friends turned their backs and looked down upon my ways you comforted and admired me and had kind words to say. Your've always been loyal to me you're forever by my side. When other people deserted me our friendship you've never denied. The best friend a person could have is who you'll always be. For you've always been terrific. You've loved and supported me. Thank you friend for everything your kindness and your care. I am ever grateful for the friendship that we share. One of the most memorable events is the prom. Girls anticipate the prom for two months, shopping for Just the right dress, buying matching s hoes and talking mom and dad into extending curfew. Boys on the other hand scope the halls for a month searching for the perfect partner to escort to prom. Here is a look at the mysterious other side. . . March 19. . . Dear Joe, Remember when I told you about that knockout girl. Iris Hoogelpiper. 1 asked her to the prom on April 18, and she said Yes! I can't believe Fm going to the prom. Your buddy, Hugo April 16. . . Dear Joe, I got my Pierre Cardin tux today. Boy is it ever hip. It's lime green w ith a fur collar and cummerbund and it even came with a matching paisley tie. The salesman at the T-Top Tux Shop said that it's the latest craze and I would definitely be the life of the party. Mom and Dad might even let me take the car. I've planned everything so perfect nothing could go wrong. Your buddy, Hugo April 19. . . Dear Joe, My life is so miserable I never want to show my face in public again. Saturday I went to Iris's house. I was there at 8 o'clock sharp but I knew something was wrong when she opened the door. She had a robe on and curlers in her hair.
