The XIV Winter Olymipc Games opened with colorful festivities on Wednesday, February 8th. The 1984 Games were in the small Balkan village of Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. Though plagued by uncooperative weather, many Olympic records were broken and it was deemed successful. As for the U.S. athletes they fell short of the medal winnings of the 1980 team (12), only bringing heme eight (4 gold and 4 silver). But they obtained status in the Alpine Skiing events which had never before been won by U.S. The Olynpic torch will travel closer to home for the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, Calif.
