Through the hallways of Life The Year Of The Champions The year they moved the ball. After many fine defensive seasons, the 78 edition of the Laurel Locomotive football team set out with the ambition of moving the ball on offense. And move it they did! Led by Tim Byrne, Brad Dantic, and Tom Russell, and many of their unheralded mates, they led the conference in several statistical categories. The ball finally took the right hops and led Laurel to it’s first share of a conference championship in twenty-two years. The season was highlighted by many wins, but three of the biggest might hae been Cody (7-2), Dillon (19-14), and arch rival Billings Central (20-0) which avenged disastorious losses of the year before. This truly was the year of Locomotive football. 1978 LOCOMOTIVES - left to right, front row: Mgr. Tim Elsenpetcr. Glenn Phillips, John Kelly, Jim Sankovich, Tim Byrne, Brad Dantic, Mike Wright. Steam Ahead With Spirit 88 Pyramids - Yells - Cheers The basketball cheerleaders started working hard learning cheers, new yells, and forming pyramids, early in the summer. Climbing on each other, often crashed, they were always willing to try again. They worked together with the other 10 cheerleaders to form huge pyramids and even larger crashes! But they made it through the year (even Karen with her fear of heights). They tried to think of more gimmicks or a little more spirit, like when they had the B.B. mothers come to a pep assemble and give their sons a booster kiss- (actually their sons thought they were kissing a cheerleader). Vera Cruz and the thirty-five students from all my country, Mexico, who got to come to the United States as exchange students sponsored by the Rotary Club this year, I got to come to Laurel. These ten months that I have been living here were the most interesting and exciting time I've ever had in my life. I enjoyed everything the best I could this year. The school choir, pep club, football games, and wrestling matches were all new things that I’ll never forget. The snow skiing, sledding, and even the cold weather were new experiences that I'd like to enjoy again sometime. Besides learning the language, I got the chances of living with different families every three months. All of them were very neat people who treated me just like a member of the family. After three months living with one of them, I felt sad when I had to move to another one, but it sure didn't take very long to get used to the new family. Now, after all this great time that I have been here, I have to go back next month, and just like I was homesick when I came here, missing my family and my friends from Mexico, I’m going to miss my families and friends from Laurel when I get back home. I’ll never forget any one of my friends that I’ve made there, neither the teachers at school nor all the people I got to know who were very nice to me. My special thanks to the Rotary Club and each one of my families - Dr. Smith family, the Louie Day family, and the Judge Walt Menello family, who let me share with them their homes, and be their exchange daughter, though it was only for three months. They’ll always be my families. Who can be so lucky to have four families in a lifetime? Good Bye and thanks to all of you for being my friends and helping me to have a great time and a wonderful year that I will never forget. Someday if you would like to come down to Mexico, I’ll be glad to show you around! Maryte Rodriquez av. 9 1418 Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico Foreign Exchange Students Agree 2. A Fond Farewell For 35 Years Service The Many Wonders of Lois Elda Larson By Nanette Coleman Shades of blue, used in the 1979 LOCOMOTIVE, compliment LADY BLUE, J-LOIS ELDA LARSON, Laurel Senior’s publication director, the Dean of Montana journalism teachers who retired this June. Lady Blue J’s name was given to her by early Laurel journalists for her distinct love of blue with the J standing for journalism. This fine teacher who taught in Missoula County High School before she was married has molded and made the Laurel Leaves, Laurel Senior’s newspaper for nearly 35 years and the LOCOMOTIVE, Laurel’s Senior's annual for four years. Coming to Laurel as a married woman teacher, she liked Laurel and Laurel certainly liked her. During this period the Leaves has dominated Montana journalism and Mrs. Larson earned the Gold Key Award from the University of Montana as the outstanding journalism teacher in Montana. She also was a Wall Street Journal Fellow receiving 22 hours credit toward a Doctorate. This year she was selected as the outstanding ournalism teacher in the nation and will receive the Medal of Merit from the National Journalism Education Association to be awarded in October “in appreciation of Lois Elda Larson’s outstanding contribution to scholastic journalism’’. The annual has received the coveted Pace-setter award for three of Mrs. L’s four years and has become a written power. It received All-State in her first year as adviser. Thirty All-States and seven of a possible nine Pace-setters have been earned by the Leaves with Laurel being awarded the first one cited in Montana. The Leaves has been ranked top by International Quill and Scroll, Columbia Press, National Scholastic Press, and regionally by Brigham Young and Ricks College. A myriad of students have won writing awards and Lady Blue J always “extracts the best.” She is proud of the many former Laurel students who make their mark as they are engaged in the field of communications. Lady Blue J is listed in Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the West, Two-thousand Women of Achievement, International Biography and Outstanding Women in Communications. She received the American Business Women's Woman of Achievement, was named the Montana Woman of Achievement by American University of Women, received the Alpha Delta Pi outstanding alum award, and recently was awarded membership in Women in Communications the outgrowth of Theta Sig and is being considered for membership in Sigma Delta Thi-who newly opened it’s membership to women. Mrs. Larson hopes to inveigle Mr. Larson to travel with her. She plans a Christmas tour of Egypt and the Holy Land. The Larson’s daughter, Maries, and son-in-law, Ed Nicholls, majored in journalism. Ed is in charge of Nebraska Associated Press activities. Brent and Lisa, the Larson grandchildren at ages 10 and 11 are already earning writing awards in the Omaha gifted education program. There is no doubt that Lois Elda Larson is the reason the journalism in Laurel is the best there is. LSH and Laurel will surely miss her, as a part of Laurel Senior High will always remain with Lois Elda Larson, and a part of Lois Elda Larson will always remain in Laurel Senior High. 1. Students. Alumnai, Friends as I close the door of the J Room for the last time, 1 review my life in Laurel Senior, wonderful students, excellent results, resourceful and satisfying experiences. The days with the Laurel Leaves and the Locomotive have enriched my life. Au 211 Close The Doors Sudden as it may seem, the doors of another year of school life are closed. As we look back on the good times, the trying times, and even the sorrowful times, it still can be said that our time here was worthwhile and our growth invaluable. To me, thats what this book is all about. The LOCOMOTIVE staff tried to capture these remembrances and bind them in the finest book ever at LSH. A special thanks goes to the many GREAT people who worked with the editors and adviser and whose fine talents contributed greatly in the making of our annual. I sincerely hope you enjoy the LOCOMOTIVE as much as we did in making it. Nanette Coleman, Editor As we leave the hallways of LSH and close the doors behind us for the final ime, we are filled with triumph, but also sorrow as we leave our friends. But the memories that have been a part of our life for three years will always be cherished. There are so many people to thank for the time and trouble that was put into this yearbook. But the most thanks goes to our adviser, Lois Elda Larson. Without her knowledge and guidance this annual would not be the success it is. A special thanks goes to the sophomore editors, Wanda Lich and Melissa Coleman, and to the junior editor, Brian Millar, who spent many hours along side of us. They were always there when we needed them. Working on the 1979 LOCOMOTIVE has been one of joy and frustrations, just as are the doors to our future. Holli Smith, Editor 1 1EECV P.O.
