With a rugged defense (which was 2nd in the conference) and great enthusiasm, the Laurel grid team set a goal in that after the season, they respected each other. A few things this year that have not been done in quite a while was the defeat of Butte Central at Butte in overtime was the highlight of the year. Known as a team of mudders, LSH 7-0 loss to the Conference Champion Bulldogs in Hardin, was decided by the bounce of the ball. The ball took a few bad hops and if it were the other way, who knows, LSH could have been the Conference Champs! ALMOST! 24 1. Tom Russell 12 pulls back and Ross Yeager 80 starts his pattern. 2. Take nothing away from the Seniors who were the leaders, however, the dieselettes became an unexpected power in the Southern A and posted a 13-1 conference record. They proceeded to take a Divisional Championship. At state they had a good showing but last second baskets held them to fifth place, Kristi Hoklin made All-State and Nanette Coleman and Kristi all-conference. Basketball games, the Prom, the Christmas Formal, and visits from two exchange students from his home, highlighted Roberto's nine-month stay at Laurel Senior High, Laurel, Montana, United States of America. Maria, YES, a friend of Roberto's from Ensenada, came from Glendive for the Christmas holidays. The two attended the Christmas Formal. Roberto's cousin Manuel, YES in Puyallup, Washington, came In March, leaving after a week taking Roberto along for a tour of Washington and Canada with Manuel's American family. After visiting Mexican restaurants in Billings, Roberto commented, The food is the same, but the taste is different. It must be the difference in condiments available. One comes to the conclusion that one must go to Mexico for true Mexican food, just as one must go to McDonald's for a true Big Mac (a favorite of Roberto's). Roberto missed his afternoon siestas in America for in Mexico his school hours were 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Prior to his departure June 11, Roberto said he would miss the quietness of the country and snow skiing. He hastily added, however, that he would definitely NOT miss the snow. By mid-March, Roberto began asking if It ever got above freezing in Montana. Spring was a relief to his warm-blooded nature— until the rains came. Although Roberto could scarcely converse in English when Mrs. Dorothy Gertz, his American mother visited as she brought him home from the airport, he now thinks and writes in both English and Spanish. He wrote his own Laurel Leaves column, Roberto's Remarks, In second semester journalism and became a member of the International Honorary Quill and Scroll. I'|| always have a little of Laurel with me—my diploma, my class ring, my Quill and Scroll pin, my Locomotive annual, copies of the Leaves, momentos from my friends, and memories of my American mother who treated me like her own . I will never forget the friends I have made in Montana. If, when I came here feeling a little homesick missing my friends at home, I assure you when I get back to Ensenada I'll be homesick again-now because I'm going to miss my American friends. If you want to come down someday I'll be glad to show you the best. Adios Amigos, I'll never forget the things you have done for me. Adios, Roberto Taylor Valencia Ave alvarvdo 749-D Ensenada Baja Calif. Mexico GRAPPLERS REBUILD Wrestling this year was not quite the way it has been, but needless to say, there was more enthusiasm and respect for this years grapplers. Coach Sprigler says, They were fine gentlemen and true athletes, and earned the respect of coaches, parents, and themselves. The year showed some great wrestlers. Keith Metzger and John Kelly divisional champs, each earned third at State for the second consecutive year had 20 wins. Wally Yovetich, was the first heavy weight wrestler in 11 years to get to State from Laurel. Neil Porter found the form and took second place at State. Laurel didn't have the depth for a championship team but worked the underclassmen to have a great team next year. 42 1. Keith Metzger applies pressure with a cross face prior to another victory. 2. Laurel played tough ball all year especially In a conference that posts the 1 and 3 ranking teams In the state. The Locomotives lost to the State A Champs In overtime. Laurel had a small team compared to A's conference size, with a front line of 6-3, 6-2, other teams In the conference posted 6-5, 6-6, and 6-7 players. LSH more than made up for their size by playing team ball. At divisional, the Locomotives couldn't hit on their own court and it was very frustrating to see the team not playing par, when the potential was there! mi 48 77 - 78 LOCOMOTIVES -seated, left to right: Paul Wagner, Ross Yeager, Mike Wood, Jim Rutt. AlI the boy's played fine golf all year with the exception of a match or two, then it seemed as one person would shoot an excellent score another would have an off day. The boy's finished third in the conference and third in the state, paced by underclassmen Mark Metzger, who placed second as an individual at state, and Rolf Peterson who highlighted the year with a hole in one. The GIRL'S GOLF had a young program this year as all the girl's were either freshmen or sophomores, and they did alot better than expected by placing second in the conference. LAUREL GOLF AND RECREATION ASSOCIATION was host site for the 1978 state golf tournament, with Bob Dantic and Don Peterson in charge, with greatly appreciated help from club members. 66 1. It was only fitting to a perfect season. With champions and depth, Laurel amassed 38 points at state and an overwhelming 108 points at divisional. Mike Wood, Tim Russell, Tom Russell, Brad Dantic, and Paul Wagner were a part of records. Endless hours of track practice with coaches Wilson, Ronan, Russell, Hackney, and Wedel, finally paid off for a building program that went into effect 4 years ago. Dedication and total participation of every member, be it running, throwing, jumping or just cheering made up the champions that were the Laurel Tracksters. 1. A person who deserved a good percentage of the points and fame was Connie Kellison. Connie broke school records in the 100-yd. dash, 220-yd. dash, 80-yd. hurdles, 110-yd. hurdles, and a record of more points scored in one track meet with 30 points. Teammates also breaking records were Lynne Philips, Nanette Coleman, and Kristi Hoklin, so you can see it wasa good year for breaking records. They hold the states highest honor as Pacesetter for Montana in newspapers and Pacesetter in yearbook--the only school to hold both honors simultaneously. At yearbook deadline, they again receive the Pacesetter Award for Class A newspapers, coming out two points ahead of their own record. The 1978 yearbook awards will be made in November. Mike Dixon, holder of the state editorial cartoon title, had his work cut out for him, as he had responsibilities on both the annual and Leaves. Serving as an editor for the annual, Mike's art is a highlight of the 1978 Locomotive. For the Leaves, Dixon's Art Editorship included a series-Feature the Teacher. Dave Forster, a scholarship winner from the Leaves at the Brigham Young University Seminar, took four first-place's in the Western Regionais-sports writing, feature writing, news writing, and copy-lay-out. Ken Fichtner worked through a trial period with paper and styles until the staff voted on the present 8 page bi-weekly. The 1977-78 Y staff published a 16 page Christmas edition and more pages for the year than any group since 1963-64. I See Who's Who for individual awards. 1. Eighth Laurel, MT 59044 Dear Mr. Dantic: May I take this opportunity to congratulate you, Ms. Lois Larson and the staff of the Locomotive for your outstanding school yearbook. To produce an annual that has received the All State Pacesetter Award demonstrates clearly the high quality of instruction and active student participation evident in your school. The entire yearbook staff should be commended for the dedication and diligence exhibited in your award-winning publication. Best wishes for continued success with the Locomotive. Superintendent CR jo 1. What an artist and editor. Mike Dixon does some artwork for the annual. 2. Special thanks to a special person Leslie IMyberg, who stayed long hours and did the Good Man Friday work which made our annual. 3. A year well done, Charlie Coleman, editor, was part of a stable crew. 4. Seventh oldest annual in Montana. Left to right: Charlie Coleman, Renee Krouze, Julie Markovich, Leslie Nyberg, and Mike Dixon. 5. Hard at work photographer Greg Smith looks over the shoulders of M ike D ixon and Charlie Coleman. 195 As the track of our lives leads us out of the halls of Laurel Senior High, we can reflect on our experiences throughout the years. After enduring the hard times and cherishing the good times, we can all say that high school was an experience we wil I never forget. It is my sincere hope that this yearbook serves to be an accurate and colorful remembrance of the 1977-1978 year. Mike Dixon, Editor As we wrap up the 1978 annual, we would like to acknowledge the enthusiasm, excitement, and motivation of the student body who helped make our book the best ever. Devoted help on adds enabled us to have special color sections and to put the graduates in color, a first for a Laurel annual. With a busy staff, it wasn't hard to put 196 pages in the Locomotive, the largest book ever published at LSH. Finding a true leader to stay when things got rough took a special person, Lois Elda Larson, Locomotive adviser, who amazes us many times. Our talented staff of artists, photographers, and editors should be proud of a book that will be hard to match. i%
