HOMECOMING DANCE Homecoming festivities started out in its traditional way with Thursday night's snake dance, and continued Friday with the crowning of the King and Queen. Friday evening, fans proured into the stadium to watch the Laurel Locomotives take on the Dillion Beavers only to see Laurel suffer a disheartening loss of 10-9. Homecoming activities ended with a dance in the Main Hall sponsored by Pep Club. In comparison with other years, Homecoming 1974 turned out to be one of the best. 10 Oh Larry, settle down. Carry me home to my place baby!! All a coach can ask for is 110 per-cent and this team gave it all season long. Our boys really hang in there. The only real problem the trainmen faced was physical disabilities. Our Locomotives lost 4 very important players at the beginning of the season due to injuries. Despite this, Laurel saw one of its more successful season. This year we finally did it; we sparked a 13-8 victory over archrival Billings Central, This made Laurel's only second win in the 24-year history of the Class A Rivalry, Losing only 3 Seniors to graduation, the prospects for next year are favorable. Competition in golf is tough as it is not restricted to classes. Laurel, which is A in other sport classifications must compete a-gainst the larger AA schools in golf. Laurel was the defending State Champion in boys golf and nearly repeated as they placed second in the State, as Missoula Sentianel put on a strong finish to edge Laurel for the State Title. The Laurel Girls team placed fourth in the state. The boys were champions in the Divisional and the girls tied for second. During the season the boys won trophies as champions of Invitational tournaments at Miles City, Livingston and Laurel. The girls team were champions of the Hardin Invitational. The girls set a new school record for a 2 girl team as Claudia Fadness shot an 89 and Apryl Byrne a 99 to establish the new record of 188. Lori Peterson fired a 103 in the same meet to make a 3 girl total of 291, which wiped out the total record of 301. Individually, Gary Metzger recorded an eagle to add his name to the record books. Gary Burke shot a 151 at the State Meet for an individual rank of third overall. Kyle Long set a new 18 hole record of 72 and tied his own birdies record of last year with 24. Gary Burke broke his own 18 hole average of last year as he lowered his average 1. 6 strokes to an 78. 0. Claudia Fadness tied Dee Peterson's record of 5 birdies in one year for a girl. With Kyle Long and Apryl Byrne the only seniors, the future continues to look bright for the Laurel Senior High Golf Team. The 1974-75 staff of the LSH Literary Magazine dedicated the current issue to Mr. Terry McCourt, respected teacher and sponsor of the magazine who died early this school year. The title, ONCE UPON HIS TIME and the cover, illustrating the objects by which we recognized Mr. McCourt, as well as eulogies by several students and some of his own writings were all included in honor of the man and his memory. The Literary Magazine has been published for five successive years under the sponsorship of various English teachers and for two years has included sketches from the art department under Mr. Seaton. The magazine strives to be a small but honest expression of student feelings in art and writing. 64 F.H.A. Their two major goals for the uear were Helping the Handicapped and Knowing Our Community. For helping the handicapped we took a basket to the Laurel Nursing Home and went caroling there and to the shut-ins. We became acquainted with the handicapped center at Eastern Montana College and made stuffed frogs and turtles for each child there. For Knowing Our Community the girls visited the quilting being done there by the Congregational Church ladies. The FHA chapter sold ice cream after school and participated in the concessions at the tournament. We attended the district convention at Red Lodge and the State Convention in Missoula. Kerron Bernhardt was elected chairman of District 10 and also was elected as secretary of the State FHA. Debbie Swenson was named the outstanding Home Economics student for the year and received the Sterling Silver Award. Suzy Homemaker Strikes Again! 65 Pep Club Officers from L TO R: Judy Goodale, Sponsor-Linda Kruse, Sac rep. - Kathy Wilder, Vice Pres.-Cindy Blohm, Secretary-Kirn Lawrenz, President-Janus Kilpatrick, Treasurer. School Spirit!! Pep Club's biggest activity this year was homecoming. This included a snake dance, coronation ceremonies, and an after the game dance, which was very well attended. Many Pep Assemblies and skits were given throughout the year. Our most famous skit this year was Basketball Jones portrayed by none other than Dan Huff. The spirit jug this year went to the Junior class as they won the spirit contests at most of the Pep Assemblies. Spirits of the players were boosted throughout the year as their lockers were occasionally decorated by Pep Club girls. Two dinners were also given by Pep Club for the cheerleaders at both the Basketball and Wrestling tournaments. 66 Activities' This year's student government was headed by Kathy Wilder, the first female student body president in LSH's history. Other officers were Nancy Pascoe, Vice-President; and Cindy Blohm Secretary-Treasurer. This year after every SAC meeting, reports were given by SAC members in all 1st period classes to let the student body know what took place in meetings. Students then gave their ideas and opinions to the SAC representative to relate back at the meetings. SAC's big project this year as every year was the Christmas Formal. It turned out to be one of the best decorated that Laurel has ever seen. Also in the spring SAC members sold smile stationary to help earn money for the muscular dystrophey drive. Clarence Wolfe Steve Wombolt CLASS OFFICERS Darlene Wystub IN MEMORIUM A happy smile, a cheery hello, a blue-gray VW, and a briefcase were his trademarks. Teaching English was his specialty. Bringing happiness into the usually solemn classroom was his custom. He was never too busy to help a confused student. Who was this wonderful man? None other than LHS's own Mr. Terrence McC ourt. Unfortunately, LHS lost this great teacher on the morning of February 2, 1975 when Mr. McCourt passed away in his home of an apparent heart attack. Mr. McCourt was born on March 14, 1921, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel ] McCourt. He was raised on a farm north of Great Falls and spent much of his first twentyone years in that general vicinity. McCourt graduated from the college of Great Falls in 1941. He also attended Carroll College and the Universities of Montana and Minnesota. During World War II, Mr. McCourt decided to serve his country; but due to having lost one of his fingers in a farm accident, he was unable to join the service. Although he wasn't able to actively serve his country, Mr. McCourt did his part to help our men in uniform. On June 3, 1948, Mr. Terrance McCourt married Helen Buckingham in White Sulphur Springs. He ranched for six years near White Sulphur Springs. His three sons-Mike, Dan, and Kevin are graduates of Laurel High and the daughter Nancy, is in the eighth grade. Then he got the inspiration-he became a teacher in Neihart and Ryegate before he came to Laurel to be an English teacher. He liked to make his classes interesting, and he often brought in witty newspaper articles or told of interesting happenings in his life time; but whatever it was, it always had something to do with what he was teaching at the time. He also liked to get his students to participate in the class as much as possible; often having little skits or plays to be read aloud in class. One of the deepest regrets that Laurel will ever have is that of upcoming students of LHS will not have the priviledge of being taught by Mr. McCourt. Although he is gone now, Mr. McCourt will be remembered at LHS. Let us not remember how he died but how he lived. Remember his smile, his cheery hello, his blue-grey VW, and his briefcase. And let us not forget his teaching, happiness, and willingness to help. A part of him remains in every student's heart for the encouragement he gave us. Cindy Blohm 113 Mr. Terry L.
