First Annual Herbstfest St. Anthony Parish Hall--better known on August 28-29 as the Laurel Herbstfest Hall—was the site of two days of festivities and meriment Friday and Saturday as nearly 6,000 people from Laurel, Billings, and surrounding areas attended the first annual Laurel Herbstfest. Sometimes with only room to just stand and listen, festgoers jammed the festhall room to take in the entertainment which was presented by a different group every 30 minutes. Pete's band, a Billings band featuring Mexican music, was a crowd favorite. As a result of a good performance, the Laurel High School Stage Band received an invitation to perform in 1974 Worland Wyoming Octoberfest. Other entertaining groups were from Columbus, Park City, Silesia, and Worland, Wyoming. Booths, operated by local organizations and featuring German and other types of food were, in some cases, sold out by Saturday evening. The constant crowd at the Herbstfest kept booth operators busy both Saturday and Sunday, sometimes leaving no time for them to view the entertainment in progress. About 350 chairs set up in the middle of the festhall, were never empty during the entire 17 hours of entertainment for the two day fest. One lady commented, I didn't even eat Saturday, I was afraid I would lose my chair. Judging from the many reports received by the Herbstfest committee from the fest goers the Laurel Herbstfest may well become an annual Affair. Mayor Louie Yovetich
