IS 'No fair peeking. 17 First Annual Herbstfest St. Anthony Parish Hall--better known on August 28-29 as the Laurel Herbstfest Hall—was the site of two days of festivities and meriment Friday and Saturday as nearly 6,000 people from Laurel, Billings, and surrounding areas attended the first annual Laurel Herbstfest. Sometimes with only room to just stand and listen, festgoers jammed the festhall room to take in the entertainment which was presented by a different group every 30 minutes. Pete's band, a Billings band featuring Mexican music, was a crowd favorite. As a result of a good performance, the Laurel High School Stage Band received an invitation to perform in 1974 Worland Wyoming Octoberfest. Other entertaining groups were from Columbus, Park City, Silesia, and Worland, Wyoming. Booths, operated by local organizations and featuring German and other types of food were, in some cases, sold out by Saturday evening. The constant crowd at the Herbstfest kept booth operators busy both Saturday and Sunday, sometimes leaving no time for them to view the entertainment in progress. About 350 chairs set up in the middle of the festhall, were never empty during the entire 17 hours of entertainment for the two day fest. One lady commented, I didn't even eat Saturday, I was afraid I would lose my chair. Judging from the many reports received by the Herbstfest committee from the fest goers the Laurel Herbstfest may well become an annual Affair. Mayor Louie Yovetich Pete strikes again. Don t twirl your arms off. For our next number? Fun at the Fest. Photos by Billings Gazette FALL 7 3 20 21 Otq 3 Even though the traditional homecoming parade and class floats were not a part of the 1973 homecoming festivities, Homecoming 73 turned out to be one of the best. The trainmen defeated the Lewistown Eagles 19-13 in a hard fought football game. Following the game, the student body enjoyed one of the best Homecoming dances ever. During the half time show, which featured the marching band, twirlers, and drill team, the Homecoming Royalty held their court. Jim Robertus and Kate O'Neil were chosen King and Queen. Gary Saxbury and Kate Robertus were chosen Prince and Princess. The girls were coached by Miss Kilwein while the co-captains, Leslyn Ayers and Peg Ostwalt kept the spirits running high. The highlights of the year came as the trainwomen pulled down a victory over the Huskies on their unbeatable home court, and beat rival Billings Central twice. The game scoring record fell when Peg Ostwalt gunned in 22 points, but this record was not long lived as Leslyn Ayers scored 25 points in a later game. Overall the team proved to be outstanding by placing third in the Divisional Tournament. Steve obtained 335 points for Laurel, which places him as second highest scorer for the Locomotives. He ranks second in assists in the team standings, with 59. In Steve's junior year he earned a position on the varsity squad. Also this year he is one of the captains. Randy Peterson was named one of the five members of the All-State basketball team, and was unanimously selected for the all conference five. He ranks second in recoveries in the nearly seventy-five year records of basketball at Laurel with 118 score. He ranks fifth in rebounds with 274, and places eighth leading scorer in the school's history with total of 391 points. Randy's field goal percentage is 452, with a record of 150 shots out of 332. Gary Thompson Girls Team The boys golf team had the most successful season of any Laurel sports area and won the State Championship. Overall the boys had a record of 75 wins, 13 losses and 2 ties. Coach Don Peterson's charges also won 4 invitational tournaments, these being Lewis-town's, Hardin's, Laurel and Livingston's. The team shot a 309 at the State tournament to establish a new 18 hole team score. Members of the record crew were Gary Burke 74, Anthony Menello 76, Kyle Long 78, and Doug Metzger 81. Gary Burke, at state in Missoula, had a 34 on the final nine and took second individually to spearhead the Laurel victory drive. The 34 established a new 9 hole record. Earlier in the year Gary Burke shot a 73 for a new 18 hole record and Kyle Long set a new season birdies record with 24. This was the fifth consecutive year Laurel qualified the Golf Teams for state. Other highlights of the year was a hole in one at Miles City by Doug Metzger and as eagle on the 9th hole at Laurel by Gary Thompson. These two shots tied the eagle record. The girls finished the year with 35 wins and 31 losses. They put in a fine performance at Laurel's Invitational and tied the record of 191 for 18 holes, with Apryl Byrne at 93 and Claudia Fadness at 98. Claudia qualified for State with a 3rd place finish in the Division and then placed 12th at State. Only 3 senior boys will be lost and no girls, so the future looks very promising. FHA The Future Homemakers of America began the year on the 4th of July by entering a float in the annual parade. Their float won the most patriotic award. To make money, the girls sold Spook Insurance for Halloween and washed any soapy windows reported. Their main money making project was selling ice cream bars and fudgesicles each night after school. F.H.A. also sold concessions during the tournaments. In November, Laurel hosted the District Convention. Two Laurel girls were officers and another was elected for next year. During the Christmas season, the F.H.A. went Christmas caroling at the Old Folk's Home. This was followed by a party at Terry's Pizza Parlor. The State Convention was held at Bozeman and Laurel was very successful here. They won a Red Rose Chapter award for their display, which covered all the projects accomplished throughout the year. The highlight for the organization was making bibs and aprons for the Billings Reveiving Home, and they were delivered to a sponsor at the annual F.H.A. Spaghetti Supper. The Dinner was very nice, new officers were installed, and this wound up the year for these ambitious girls. 78 Pep club Back Row, L. The Laurelaires received a Superior rating at both District and State Festivals, singing, Three Hungarian Folk Songs , One Less Bell To Answer , and God Bless the Child . The Symphonic Choir also received a Superior rating at the District Festival. The three concerts this year proved to be outstanding, making Mr. Heller s last year at L. H. S. the very best for him, and also for his students. My, how interesting! We wish to express our gratitude to the marvelous people that helped to put together the 74 annual. The members of the Junior class who pulled us out of the slumps by adding their determined help. Our thanks to Mr. Helgeson for his endless patience in listening to our gossip stories at workshops and waiting for the staff to arrive and finally getting down to business. Without Shanon Studios and their patience rendered to our un-organization and endless phone calls, there could never be pictures of all our remembrances. Most of all thanks to the students and teachers that gave us ideas and set us on our way by being themselves. Co-editors: Judy Gjefle Leslyn Ayers 96 Let me see now. . . Annual ,rWho me? Because of the great student interest in TGI this year, the whole department had to take on a new course of action. Instead of having just two classes each day, a new teacher, Mr. Dusty Dusterhoff, was hired to help Mr. Quinn with a third class. The Laurel TGI Club took third place at the annual trouble shooting contest held in Helena, April 23. Dave Metzger and Jim Robertus were the two chosen our of 40 seniors to represent Laurel. All in all, the new system worked out very well, and the teachers and the students, both, had a very good year. Trade and Industries A X This year, Art Club visited Lyndon Pomeroy who is a metal sculptor, and Brenda and Brian Persha in Red Lodge. He is a potter while she Batiks, also Leroy Greene at the Yellowstone Art Center. Art Club purchased a camera this year and has been setting up a dark room for photography. THE MAN Officers L To R: Duane Kroll, Vice President; Jay Story, President; Debbie Dixon, S.A.C.; Debbie Cherry, Treasurer; and Vickie Lohrenz, Secretary. Words cannot express or explain the reasons for death. God giveth life to all men and God must also taketh life away. But a man will never die spiritually because his soul dwells in the hearts of those who loved him, forever. The body leaves us, but the soul lives on, and so does the purpose for which one lived here on the earth. It's so hard at times to accept death when it comes as a tragedy and a big hurt to all concerned. We can only remember Tom as he lived and cared and tried to understand. Let us not ponder in sorrow, but be happy he lived as he did. . . a beautiful person. By Sheri Storck As if life stands still And time does too You d think there was Nothing left to do. But you go on To another place With different people and a different race. He may leave our sides And die someday But he lives in our hearts And minds in some way. He was himself And that s best to be The ones that knew Love him—Including ME. By Dana Rowland The motorcycle engine of Tom Fla gen became silent April 30. Tom, a ruff and ready kid to be around, had a deep inside understanding. He was always willing to lend a helping hand . Biology seemed to be his favorite class and the idea of working with animals and plants thrilled him. Laughing, having a good time, and enjoying life was his thing. He couldn t get enough knowledge about animals even though he learned with a carefree attitude. Just yesterday he cleaned up his lab materials after disecting a fish—Mrs. McGarry and Tom were laughing—we were having a GREAT time. It was Flagen s best loved subject. Today we see his vacant chair. We remember him yesterday, smiling with a wide grin, as he sat in Front Hall in that stag line lounging on the radiator with the sophomore gang or at Merle Cherry s Construction, cutting wood or putting something together for a little spending money, money to run my wheels. Tom, a regular fellow, liked excitement. One could hear that hearty laugh that followed a teasing session. His voice is stilled, but we sophomores here in Laurel Senior will always hear his engine pouring in our hearts and minds. Yes, I see. 129 Yellowstone Bank What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, Nor the heart of man conceived,... God has prepared for those who love him. This prayer is dedicated to Michael Eugene Saxbury, who was fatally injured in a motorcycle accident, on August 15, 1973. To strangers reading about this occurrence in the obituary column the next morning, the story would probably seem like just another sad incident of God's Early Calling To A Youth. Those fortunate enough to know Mike, recognized the value and merit his life accumulated in 18 short years. With the loss of Mike, a chapter of our lives was torn out, with only an empty hole to replace the space that Mike once filled. It's sad to think that our lives will never again be enlightened by this enthusiastic and vibrant human being; yet it's exulting to realize that our mighty wrestler and cherished friend is once again within the realms of our Most Gracious Creator. Mike lived by faith, and because of it, God has chosen to guide him on an early journey into the Wilderness of The Almighty. May we always remember Mike as he lived, and let the precious memories of him remain alive, burning in our minds forever. Dear God: Sometimes we find it hard to understand why You are depriving us of the joy of experiencing life with Mike. We have been taught that You have a good reason for everything You do, but it's hard for us. In our mere mortalness, to comprehend the reason for Your action. Mike's every action reflected the kind of person he was. He was a person you could listen to for hours upon hours, and never tire of his endless stories and narrative memoirs. His ambition and enthusiasm anticipated his unquenchable desire for life. It's a comfort to us knowing that in the short time Mike lived, his jubilance and bliss enlightened the lives of so many people. He sprinkled happiness on the lives of others, just as wild flowers sprinkle our many prairies. Memories churn over and over in our minds, wringing out all of the reminiscences of every detail about him: The way he'd swing down the hall, so handsome and proud in his letterman's sweater-or watching him roll head over heels on the wrestling mat, putting every ounce of vigor into winning his match for the team-and his one virtue that stands out above the rest was his never ending concern for his fellow man, and his constant striving for greater goodness, wisdom, and personal fulfillment. No amount of words can sum up a person like Mike. You had to seem touch and talk to him to realize what an extra-oidi-nary and fantastic person he was. No Father, there are no words powerful enough to accurately express all of our deep feelings about Mike. If we'd only known how limited his existance on earth was to be, we could have proved to him how much he meant to us. How well we could express our gratitude and appreciation to him now, if only we could see him once more. We never realized how profound the feeling of emptiness and loneliness could be, until we reached for him and he was no longer there. The precious memories he gave us to treasure will be cherished forever, and will remain imprisoned in our thoughts. Let him know, Dear God, that we think of him as a lost brother, founded by God, whom we'll find again someday. Don't ever let him be alone, or ever let him forget us, for we will never forget him. May the memory of him touch the hearts of those who knew Mike and loved him with joy and tenderness. Please Father, take care of the Littlest Big Man of Them All .
