Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1972 volume:

1972 Laurels Presents. . . Laurel High Schol Laurel, Montana DOING TOGET THINGS HER STEVE ROBERTS MEMORIUM A typical day at LHS is one filled with laughter as students walk the halls. Friendly greetings are shouted from one end of the hall to the other while other students congregate in different rooms. Papers are handed in and speeches are given, but always there is laughter. March 21 was not a typical day at LHS for there was no laughter or greetings. There was silence as death hung over the building. A fear of death floated from student to student as friends of Steve Roberts learned of his death. Steve, a member of the Class of 1973, died in a motorcycle accident March 20 as he was riding with a friend. Word of his death spread quickly and students found it impossible to work. The feeling of death and memory of Steve would stay with diem for years but on that Tuesday, the feelings were especially deep. Steve's funeral was held Friday, March 24 and one of the ministers remarked that he remembered Steve smiling and laughing and always joking. One of Steve's friends said, When Steve had 50t, 25 t was mine and 25 t was his. That's the kind of guy Steve Roberts was. This is how Steve Roberts should be remembered. Remember him as a smiling friend greeting you on a typical day atLHS. Of those 13 years, Laurel has travelled to State 11 and placed the last four. He has been named Coach of the Year for 1972, but this title is nothing new to him as he received it in 1960 and once again in 1969. Before coming to Laurel, Mr. Peterson had coaching assignments in Florence, Choteau, and Belt where he posted better records than the schools had in their history. Pete's record, a total win and loss of 600-211, is one that any coach would envy. LHS can be proud to call him Our Coach. Our laborers, Penny Rehling, Shelley Wegner, Sandy Bangert, Lynette Lovgren, Carol Oversen, Cathie Kautz, and Karen Rangitsch who drug themselves out of bed Saturday mornings to come to work-shop should each be given a medal for endurance. Shannon Studios should be given an award for Work Above and Beyond the Call of Duty , as they printed and re-printed, and crawled all over the railroad yards for us. Bob Dantic and Campbell Calvert deserve Pulitzer Prizes for Photography as they have been extremely helpful with pictures that we could never have taken ourselves. All art work has been contributed by Jo Dee Wruck and Mark Strand and we know that their work will someday be displayed in the Louvre. Mr. Helgeson, our advisor, should be given a Medal for Bravery as he put up with an all female staff, and their decisions. To you, we hope you have happy reading and a lot of memories. President; Mike Baney, President; i The Class of 1972 has certainly left their , marks in Laurel, some good and some bad. As freshman, Pat Me Cormick was class president and Mike Blaylock governed the ' student body. The Toots were cheered on by JoDee Wruck, Margo Olson, Shelley Wegner, Marilyn Ronan, Bette Williams and Lee Ann Bradley. In football, the Toot won one game and was the first frosh team' in years to be beaten by Billings Central. Basketball season was better, but they were the first team in years to take second instead of first place. Upon entering the senior high, they continued to leave their marks. The prize for the best homecoming float went' to the Class of '72. Sophomore Class officers were: Rick Dieterich, president; Byron Spoon, veep; Debbie Kilpatrick, sec; Dale Henry, treas; Shelley Wegner and Pat McCormick, SAC Sophomores sponsored Sadie Hawkin and for a class which entered high school with a lot of money, after that dance, they found themselves broke. As juniors, the best float was once again that of the Class of '72. Much to the relief of class president, Randy Waddell, the senior banquet and prom were a success. Other officers were Terri Orr, veep; Sherry Collins, sec; Dale Henry, treas; and Rick Dieterich and Margo Olson, SAC. Senioritis then hit, but still, the marks were left. The homecoming float was a complete flop, but decorating was a fun experience, from pancake batter fights to the placement of the toilet as finishing touches. The football tean bettered the win-loss record and all the blizzards made it a memorable season. The basketball team improved over the years and are now ranked the Class A State Champions, losing only one game. Seniors initiated skip day (and also paid for it). Mike Blaylock was once again Student Body President. t SENIORS.. .
