THE CLASS OF 1971 REMEMBERS Cathy VanNice Kathy Pascoe Nathan Sahl This year the class of '71 was short three members. The three, Cathy VanNice, Kathy Pascoe, and Nathan Sahl-were taken before their time. All three were well liked and thought highly of by their friends during their school careers. Cathy VanNice, in her short sixteen years, was a wrestling cheerleader full of vitality, pep, and steam. She was also active in her church's youth organization, MYF. Also a wrestling cheerleader, Kathy Pascoe held up the pride of the school by sticking with the grapplers even when they were on a losing streak. She was also an active participant in Rainbow and MYF. Nathan Sahl showed the skills that were necessary to be an excellent wrestler. These skills paid off when Nathan was chosen to participate in the state wrestling match. Besides being a fine wrestler, he excelled in football. Nathan was also a member of the Lutheran Church. These three, though no longer with us, will always be remembered in the hearts of their fellow classmates. Their contribution to Laurel High Schools activities will never be forgotten. People passing the school may have seen Mr. Brown, the custodian, checking windows and doors late at night or bending to pick up papers blowing in the parking lot. Fred Brown had been part of the Laurel schools for nearly eleven years. He passed away at his home at 1:30 Christmas morning, Dec. 25, 1970. For the students who knew him, LSH can never be thought of without Mr. Brown coming to mind. 13 The refs are on our side! Gary, I told you to MARCH. Move over! You're blocking me! Kramer's Crop. VARSITY FOOTBALL Head Coach Dick Ronan Asst. Coach Ben Vaugn The tough Class A Central Division was well rounded this year with three teams tieing for the Conference Championship—Butte Central, Bozeman, and Billings Central all boasting a 5-1 record. The young Locomotives finished fourth in overall defense right behind the Conference Co-Champions. The boys possessed an intense desire to compete and provided the Laurel student body and community with many exciting contests. The season finale was capped by a resounding victory over the Hardin Bulldogs. The team boasted many stalwarts such as Ed Robertus and Jeff Knaub who were picked on the All-Conference dream team---Ed as a linebacker and Jeff as a halfback. 16 Dale Shay Dennis Roberts David Hodges MANAGERS Charles Gunnels Doug Gratwohl Randy Metcalf Mike Steinmetz Ed Robertus Full Steam Ahead Wait For Me Catch! 1970 Shall We Dance Teams Opp. LHS Lewistown 12 6 Glendive 14 13 Billings Central 33 3 Hardin 0 37 Bozeman 33 12 Butte Central 34 0 Anaconda 7 6 i SEASON RECORD Jeff On The Run Victory Score Charge! Festivities began Thursday night with the traditional Snake Dance and bonfire. Friday was filled to the brim with excitement. The Royal Court was presented at the coronation ceremony Friday afternoon with Cheryl Turcotte reigning as Queen. Class floats and clear skies added to the success of the pre-game parade. Following the parade Laurel fans watched an exciting game in which Anaconda emerged the victor by a slim one point margin 7-6. With a two-year record of 52-0 and a pair of state titles behind him, Laurel wrestling sensation Ed Robertus is trading his wrestling uniform for a pair of farmer's overalls. Ed capped a brilliant wrestling career by capturing the 167-pound title to finish the season with a 27-0 record. Last year he was the state Class A 155-pound champion with a 27-1 record. But the record is only half of it. He scored 100 points, accomplished 13 pins, and did not allow a point scored against him. In his sophomore year Ed won 20 of his 25 matches, and tied two. Then came the 52 straight victories. The toughest one was the last, in which Ed gained a narrow 2-0 victory for the title. The 1970-1971 Laurel Locomotive wrestling team had a very successful season, posting an 8-5-1 dual meet record, two good showings in invitational tournaments, and a fourth place finish in the tough Southern Divisional tournament. Eight boys went to the state tournament at Bozeman, where the Locomotives placed seventh. During the season, Laurel wrestlers established an overall record of 150-129-4. In doing so, they made 71 pins, 144 takedowns, 58 predicaments, 196 reversals, 48 nearfalls, 62 escapes, 46 infraction points, and 95 points for time advantage, for a total of 1143 points. Locomotive Wrestling future looks bright as this onetime minor sport is now ready to make itself known as one of the major sports in Locomotive Athletics. This year's trainmen won 23 and lost 3. The only team to surpass this record was the 1968-69 aggregation that undefeated in 26 games to win the Big 32 season and tournament championship. This year the Laurel basketball team won the Class A Eastern Division conference and tournament championship. The Locomotives placed second in the State Tournament at Butte as they were edged in the final game by Sidney, a team they had defeated three times during the season. The team established new shooting percentage records as they made 531 of 1274 field attempts for .417. They also set a new free throw record with 535 of 782 for .684. The team made 28 consecutive free throws during one stretch this season. They made 23 in a row against Billings Central. The team also established a new single game field goal percentage record as they made 25 of 40 for .625 against Sidney in the semifinals of the Divisional Tournament. They also recorded the third highest single game total in a 92-56 romp over Glendive. Gerry Ready led an assault on individual records. He has the most assists for a high school career with 168 and the most recoveries with 156. He also has the best free throw percentage for a single game with 10 of 10. Steve Barrett set a new single game field goal percentage mark as he made 12 of 12 against Sidney in the Divisional. Gerry also made 14 free throws in a single game to establish a new mark. Gerry scored 358 points to go down in the record books as the eleventh highest single season scorer in the school's history. He made 361 last year to also rank tenth. Gerry Ready and Steve Barrett were picked as the first five of the Divisional Tournament Team and Gerry Ready was on the first five of the State Tourney Team. Steve Barrett and Wayne Weishaar were chosen for the second team. All in all, it was a very successful season. QUILL AND SCROLL LEAVES LAUREL The Annual Staff wishes to thank all those responsible for making it possible to put out the 1971 annual. A special thanks to the advertisers whose contributions are greatly appreciated, and to the members of the Junior class who attended our Saturday workshops giving us a helping hand. This book, like those of the past, sums up a year of activities, both team and individual. It is hoped that as the students look through the pages now, and in the future, it will bring back many fond memories of the good old days at L.H.S. We hope this book will serve as a valuable record to be treasured in the years to come. —Annual Staff Co-Editors: Sue Gjefle - Bob Kolski TRADES AND INDUSTRIES Look out! You might get shocked!
