The Big War KATHY PASCOE When a boy in our neighborhood formed the appropriately named club called the Rat Finks, calm life was shattered. Armed with waterguns, the small- fry of our block struck terror in the hearts of anyone walking alone in the 800 block. The club, which unfortunately had two of my sisters as loyal members, had the simple initiation rites of buying a large plastic ring with a rat on it. Their motto Kill Old Ladies must have included me. I was innocently watering the lawn one day when I looked up into the eyes of the leader. Giving him a smile that dripped with honey, I turned to retreat into the house, when I was faced with two other members. I was surrounded likewise on all sides. They attacked. Pinning me to the ground, they each had their turn at squirting me with their stupid water pistols. That wasn't too bad. But have you ever had 20 rubbeibands from practiced hands hit you at once? No? Try it. It hurts! By some miracle I survived that attack, but never again will I venture out of the house without my squirtgun and rubberband. --To make Kathy's memory more lasting, we chose one of her own essays.
