ACTION” HOMECOMING ’67-’68 Homecoming this year was set to the theme of Let's Brew a Victory. Four floats highlighted the homecoming parade, with the seniors' taking first in competition. Butte Central defeated Laurel in the evening's football game. At half-time the queen, her court, and their parents were honored. The annual snake dance held the day before was well attended. The junior class made arrangements for the bonfire, and at the suggestion of Mr. Bares, band director, the T I Club gave us our flaming LHS . The game with Anaconda, there, was probably one of our poorest efforts of the season. We had not yet jelled as a team. Laurel's poor offensive effort in the Bozeman game was not enough to overcome their exceptional speed. Laurel's flu-riddled team could not overcome the accurate passing of Butte Central. The new Gangster offense came into its own in the 39-0 victory over Hardin. Although we outplayed the Rams, our pass receivers simply could not catch the ball. A few key passes caught rather than dropped could have meant a win for Laurel. Not wanting to be beaten by Livingston, headed by our former line coach, the team was truly up for a victory. In our season's finale with Glendive, it was a matter of too much Gangster with quarterback Warren Bickford having a great night and our entire defensive unit turning in a fine performance. All in all - it has been an interesting and exciting season. The 1967-68 Trainmen started the season with a pair of non-conference wins against two highly rated Wyoming teams-Lovell and Cody. With Bob Crow the only returning regular from last year, the locomotives were young and inexperienced shown by their winning only 3 of their first 10 games. Then the team began to jell by winning 6 of their last 8 games prior to Divisional Tournament. Although Division I had 4 teams rated in the top 10 in the state. Laurel suffered only one defeat to Great Falls Russell, then walked away with the rest of their games, a second place trophy, and a birth in the State Tournament. At State, Laurel experienced first game jitters as they lost to Butte Central 47 to 45, but came back the second game to the Yellowstone County Championship over Billings West 70 to 47. The heart breaker came when the Loco's were edged by The Great Falls Bisons with a last second tip in and the fans realized they had been put out of the tournament by 3 points in 3 seconds in two different games. Even though Laurel took sixth in the tourney, they were easily one of the three best teams in the State. w CAGERS UPHOLD TRADITION Laurel Opponents 65. . He also captured 1st. place in the divisional tournament and won a very respectable 3rd in the state. The state tournament team was made up of Bemie Bray, 138 lbs class; Joe Norris, 165 lbs class; Bruce Schreiner, 145 lbs class; Jerry Capp, 154 lbs class; and Dan Kerr, 180 lbs class. Father Tom Scheidecker gives daughter Susan Groll and fiance Dave Galusha some last-minute advice. Mourners in the graveyard scene carry umbrellas. 'PLAYS TO PACKED HOUSE’ Our town , a three act play by Thornton Wilder, was a picture of small town life in the early 1900's; however, it could apply to any town at any time - even today. The play had very little scenery so both the actors and the audience had to use a lot of imagination. In all, it was a new and refreshing change from the traditions of concrete settings and furnishing. Actors were Paul Gjefle, Ken Hotchkiss, Tom Scheidecker, Suzie Groll, Todd Yeager, Claudine Michels, Dave Galusha, James Gray, Merrilee Hall, John Wold, Tish Sherrow, Jim Scott, Tom Smart, Tim Guenthner, Holly Olsen, John Beslanwitch, Gary Fleming, Wendy Blaylock, and Doreen Mahan. ONE-ACT PLAYS Todd and Claudine reunited at the Maples resort. A simple bridge game breeds gossip. Cast of Don't Tell a Soul : Jan Branstetter, Nancy Steinhart, Mary Ann Johnson, Cindy Burke, Tish Sherrow, Merilee Hall, Patty Mayes. SOME WOMEN WERE TALKING was a study in gossip and how it can affect peoples' lives. Claudine Michels, staying at a quiet resort for the summer, felt intimidated by the other women guests as they told her of all the marvelous things their husbands did. She then made up a story about her husband portraying him as a hero, and when he arrived, he was obliged to play the part. Todd Yeager played the husband. Other actors were Patsy Figgins, Kathy Koppelman, and Michelle Turcotte Tiger Lily strikes! TIGER LILY portrayed Dodie Mahan as a ruthless girl who was out to get Ken Hotchkiss' money by hook or by crook (Tom Smart played the crook). An attempt on Ken's life was foiled by little sister Vickie Vennes who keeps the pair at rifle point until help comes. Jim Gratwohl played the boy next door. Vickie mean business. DON'T TELL A SOUL showed how gossip can spread in a small circle. Cindy Burke showed up at a formal with a black eye. Her friends began to discuss it behind her back; the rumor that her husband was beating her got so far out of hand that society reporter Branstetter was called in to cover the sensational scoop. Cindy tries to convince her friends. 69 CHRISTMAS FORMAL The theme of this year's Christmas formal was Sleigh Ride. Members of SAC, the sponsor, used dark blues to carry out the theme. The refreshment area was separated from the dance floor by a partition of real fir trees, which were left over from Christmas in town. Janice Wegh was crowned queen and Bob Crow king. They were crowned as they sat in a sleigh throne. Janice shows off her bouquet of roses in the refreshment area. 70 SENIOR BALL The theme of the senior ball, Midnight in Tokyo, was designed originally to be held out on the patio. Rainy weather changed the seniors' plans and the dance was moved to the front hall. The colors were soft pink and green, and the Oriental mood was accented by paper lanterns, folded paper birds, and signs bearing Japanese script. Joe Norris was crowned king and Rebecca Bauer, queen. Music was provided by the Elastic Limit. Having a ball! Rebecca and Joe are surrounded by members of their court. Claudine Michels, senior class president, directs the coronation. Judy and Gary on their sea-shell throne. Dancers admire the decorations during a break. GARY HARTMAN AND JUDY HILL reigned as king and queen of the junior-senior prom. Other candidates were Mary Glynn George, Connie Knaub, Doreen Mahan, Jeanetta Smith, Jack Frickel, Dan Kerr, Don Van Nice, and Herb Wood. Judy was presented with a bouquet of red roses and each queen candidate received one long-stemmed rose. To stay with the theme Underwater Fantasy the juniors used both light and dark blues. The entrance to the dance floor was a lighted whale's mouth. Fish nets hung from the crepe paper ceiling to mark the refreshment area. They also added a sand castle to complete the effect. Live music was provided by the Sound Establishment. Junior class sponsors who worked long hours with the students to make the prom possible were Mrs. Shirley Holthaus, Mr. Chet Blaylock, and Mr. George Chapman. 72 UNDERWATER BANQUET AND FANTASY” PROM ’68 THE TRADITIONAL BANQUET honoring the senior class of '68 was held in the Fred Graff cafeteria. The theme was carried out with blue crepe paper decorations and appropriate centerpieces. The menu featured a salad bar before the main course was served. Speakers after dinner were Bob Speare, master of ceremonies, Chris Calvert, Claudine Michels, senior class president, and Mr. West principal. Todd Yeager and Tom Scheidecker, '70, presented a skit for entertainment. Karen Keener, '68, and Debbie Harris, 69, sang solos accompanied by Deannie Strand. 73 1 President-Sidne Frank Vice Pres.-Alice Fukado Secretary-Mary Lynn Harper Treasurer-Nikki Nelson Pt. Keeper-Jane Geertz Publicity-Debbie Harris SPARKS Sparks Pep Club this year consisted of nearly 150 members, including five boys. The pep club officers spent a lot of time revising the club's constitution and organizing committees for all the home games and tournaments. A post-game balcony dance sponsored by Sparks was well attended. The girls in the upper left-hand corner of the picture sport purple blazers with white blouses, the new uniform which will be completely adopted in three years. Much credit for this group's success must go to Mrs. Georgia Wilson, sponsor. A SQUAD CHEERLEADERS These perky girls kept the spirit of the pep club behind the team, and many long hours of practice made them into a precision group. The pictures sweaters were bought this year, and the mascots' uniforms are also new. The girls traveled to nearly all of the out-of-town games at their own expense, including the Divisional and State Tournaments. 74 Jeanetta Smith Kathy La Flesch Linda Nunn Doreen Mahan June Whitney Sally Smith Janetta Smith Head Shari Muri Patti Marlene Daley Sonstegaard Patty Claudia Bryan Turcotte CHEERLEADERS Carla Gillette Dena Mogan Glenda Hawley B SQUAD WRESTLING The JV and B squad athletic teams receive the support of these girls . All five girls were sophomores this year, and worked together very well as a group. Although sometimes the cheering section wasn't as large as they would have liked it, the girls made up for it with their pep and enthusiasm. The alternate for the group was Wendy Blaylock. The Locomotive grapplers were often sparked on to victory by the efforts of these three girls. Since organized cheering breaks down at wrestling matches, their cheers were directed to the wrestlers themselves. The girls helped the other cheer groups with the pep assemblies. 76 Co-Captains Mary Glynn Nicky George Cashmore DRILL TEAM The Locomotions, as they are also known, have done a great job of entertaining at home games this year. Their eye-catching purple satin uniforms added the perfect touch to the precision routines. Music for the drills was provided by the pep band or by recorded music. The Locomotions had the honor of performing at the State Basketball Tourney in Bozeman this year. Mrs. Georgia Wilson is the team's sponsor. These athletic and agile girls are another halftime group, performing regularly at basketball games. Many intricate and difficult solo and group demonstrations let the girls show off their skills, usually to soft background music provided by the pep band. A sister of Sue Phillips, senior member, tumbled with the group as their mascot. At the final performance, the senior members received corsages in appreciation of their hard work. Mrs. Wilson sponsors the tumblers. Four seniors and four sophomores made up the flag group this year. During football they performed halftime routines with the band, and entertained the basketball crowds at two home games. They spent a lot of time practicing after school in order to perfect their shows. They marched in all Laurel's parades, and were a pleasing addition to the parade order. Patty Mayes BATON TWIRLERS Debbie Fritzler Carla Gillette Nancy Brathole Assistant Head Doreen Mahan Head Twirler Laura Speare Kay Kautz These girls put in a lot of time to work up their routines, and were featured at halftime during both football and basketball games. Precision is the goal that this group strives for. Roxie Martin LAUREL SENIOR SYMPHONIC BAND PEP BAND Under the direction of the new band director, Mr. Robert Bares, the band had a very successful year. The band performed for parades, RMC Band Day, homecoming, and did well at the music festivals. Eleven band members were chosen for All State Band, six groups and solos received superiors at District, with three of them plus the band receiving I's at State. A standing ovation was received at the last conceit. The pep band played at all the home basketball games and also at the divisional tournament in Great Falls. At the end of the year the band chose Alice Fukado as Sousa winner. 80 SOUSA WINNER BAND OFFICERS Alice Fukado Front row: Gail Fox, Charlene Reisinger, Kathy Kirsch, Donna Bernhardt-sec.-treas. Eight groups and solos received I's at District and five received superiors at State. Also earning superiors were the choir, boys' glee, and girls' glee. The first Laurelaire concert was given with all of the members wearing ski clothes to set off the winter mood. An operetta, Down in the Valley, was performed at the last Laurelaire concert. Although this was Miss Rein's first year at LSH it was also her last, as she gave up teaching for the sound of wedding bells. Besides the standard issues, the annual Looney Leaves was a big hit, having the first douBle page cartoon illustrated by the students. Often members of the staff stayed after school till 7 p.m. working on the paper, but generally it was worth it. Leaves advisor is Mrs. Lois Elda Larson. QUILL AND SCROLL Members of Quill Scroll have written at least one article for the Leaves and both juniors and seniors are often included. The group puts on an annual banquet at the end of the year to name the new journalists. Officers were Leonard Nicholas, president; Linda Ellingson, vice president; Kay Kautz, secretary; Jane Cartwright, treasurer; Cherie Ramsey, SAC. The sponsor was Mrs. Larson. 86 ANNUAL STAFF A picture was not available of the entire annual staff this year, but in the pages you may see pictures of the members at work. They adopted a new picture arrangement method this year, bringing the pictures more to the center. Staff members spent many hours working after school and on Saturdays. Officers this year were Colleen Kucera, general editor; Don Van Nice, Ad Manager; Ken Hotchkiss, business manager. This large organization is one of the most active. Laurel’s forensic teams were represented in the Divisional and State speech meets as well as many local meets. They put on several plays; the major one was Our Town by Thornton Wilder. Three one-act plays were also presented to the public. The officers were Claudine Michels, president; Mary Glynn George, vice president; Sidne Frank, secretary-treasurer; Paul Gjefle, SAC; program chairman, Roger Olsen. The sponsor was Mr. Tom Kilpatrick. SPEECH AND DRAMA 87 LETTERMEN’S CLUB Besides being active in sports, members of the club do many other things such as selling popcorn at home games to raise money. The Lettermen furnish boys to hold the ropes on the basketball floor at halftime and to help with home track meets. The club tried something new this year and sponsored a patio dance during the spring. Officers were Joe Norris, president; Jim Stevens, vice president; Warren Bickford, secretary; Dean Frickel, treasurer; Gary Hartman, sergeant-at -arms. Sponsors were Mr. Graham, Mr. Wilson, and Mr. Adam. GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Athletics provides both fun and exercise for these girls. They participate in sports such as softball, dodgeball, and volleyball. They held their annual basketball tournament during the winter, with the senior I team returning as champions. Officers were Linda Nunn, president; Kathy La Flesch, vice president; Marilee Roach, secretary-treasurer; Nikki Nelson, point keeper; Judy Hill, SAC; Sue Phillips, program chairman. LIBRARIANS P.
