A The 1967 Laurels Present Laurel, Montana Editors’ Note Remember this, kids. Nobody owes you a thing. You have had 12 years of living, living and learning which have cost your parents and the taxpayers a lot of dough. Now grab every minute as it if were your last, for it's sure if you don't accomplish for yourselves, no one else will”. These words came from a speech in the Reader's Digest delivered by a woman to a high school graduating class. This sums up the challenge facing the 1967 graduating class as well as classes to come. We have tried to record all of the glories earned by individuals and teams during one year. It sums up a year in the lifetime of many students and should be kept as a valuable treasure for it holds much. This book could be used as a record to add to as you, the creators of this book, grow and learn more about what your parents have been telling you about life. Remember, If you don't accomplish for yourselves, no one else will . We would like to thank Mr. Helgeson, our advisor, the LSH student body, and everyone else who has helped to complete this book of memories. A Look Through L.H.S. or a look beyond will reveal the generation which includes the Class of '67 in a lifetime of innovations in energy, travel, television and space. Skills, leadership and understanding will be needed to utilize this rapidly expanding knowledge. We hope that your sojourn at L.H.S. has partially prepared you for this venture. CP. This book is your Look at Laurel High School for this year. More than a building and equipment, a school is its students--their ambitions, disappointments, joys, and sorrows. It is sincerely hoped that your education here will assist you in finding a vital and rewarding place in the society of the future. 6 Mrs. Shirley Holthaus B.A. Cornell College English II Sophomore Class Advisor Mrs. Lois Elda Larson M.A. Kansas State College English III, Quill and Scroll, Laurel Leaves, Journalism English— Mr. Chester Blaylock M.E. Board Of Trustees THE HALLS OF LAUREL Oh we love the HALLS OF LAUREL That surround us here today, And we will not forget Tho’ we be far, far away. To the hallowed HALLS OF LAUREL Every voice will bid farewell, And shimmer off in twilight Like the old vesper bell. One day a hush will fall, The footsteps of us all Will echo down the hall and disappear. But as we sadly start Our journeys far apart, A part of every heart will linger here, In the sacred HALLS OF LAUREL Where we've lived and learned to know, That thro' the years we'll see you in the sweet after glow. Our trademark is the school paper, the Junior Highlites, which is now known as the Tooterville Times. We saw the high school basketball team place fourth in the Class A Divisional tournament. Our sophomore year piled on more glories for the ’’underclassmen . Leading the class were Wayne Bickford, president; Doug Easton, vice-president; Jeannie Muri, secretary; Kathy Wall, treasurer; and Teresa Gaub and Marc Lackman, SAC Representatives. The sophomore homecoming float earned first place. The Laurel Leaves sale netted us third place. We not only sponsored the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance, but sophomore Julie Hedstromwas crowned Daisy Mae. The first all-school musical, The Sound of Music , found many sophomores in parts. Our first year in the new high school saw the basketball team earn third place in the Class A divisional tournament, on their way up the ladder to the championship. Mr. Gran, Mrs. Gamble, and Mr. Dunham were our advisors. Doug Easton lead our class during our junior year. Other officers included Fern Heller, vice-president; Teresa Gaub, treasurer; Julie Hedstrom, secretary; and Mimi Bjorum and Marc Lackman, SAC Representatives. Our homecoming float earned a second place rating. Kathy Miner and Miles Walton became the Laurel Leaves King and queen, with the juniors selling the most subscriptions. Daisy Mae and Li'l Abner were juniors Peggy Fiske and Doug Easton. Sue Pascoe, Jeannie Muri, Peggy Fiske, and Kathy Wall with alternates Debbie McCormick, Fern Heller, Joanne Reichert, and Margaret Barclay represented Laurel at Girls State. Marc Lackman, Gary Harkin, John Perrigo, and Wayne Bickford with alternates Ron Maart, Darrell Ehrlick, Bob Shay, and Keith Flagler attended Boys State. Julie Hedstrom represented Laurel at the State Basketball tournament after the Locomotives won a challenge game with Helena. The peak of our junior year was the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet, the theme of which was The Last Time I Saw Paris . A Parisiene sidewalk cafe opening onto die dance floor created the French atmosphere needed. A mural of the Eifel Tower overlooked the white, rose-covered swing which served as the throne for the queen, Paulette Schmall. Officers for our final year were Jennie Muri, president; Kathy Wall, vice-president; Teresa Gaub, secretary; Linda Prill, treasurer; and Phyllis Pardee and Julie Hedstrom, SAC Representatives. The second all-state musical, The King and I , found Mike Foley and Fern Heller in the lead rolls. Laurel tied for third place in football, went to the State basketball tournament as Class A Division I basketball champs, earned the State championship wrestling trophy with senior Denny Besel as an individual State champ, earned a second place rating in track, and the FHA chapter earned the State trophy for the best chapter. The Senior Ball carried out the class colors, tangerine and yellow, with the theme Mellow Yellow . High school Week delegates carried away the honors with $1200 worth of scholarships. Class valedictorian, Kathy Wall, earned the top scores in the State. Jeannie Muri, class salutatorian, also gained high scores. Seniors were honored at the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet having the theme, The Isle of the Golden Dreams . Class advisors were Mr. Dunham and Mr. McCourt. The metallic purple gowns marked the end of three busy years for the 133 members of the Class of '67, the second class to complete all 3 years at LSH. 80 MICHAEL BRUCE ARM-STRONG-Track 1,2,3; Football 2,3,4; Basketball 4; Librarian 3; T 8 I 4; Letterman's 2,3,4 DENNIS L.
