THE ’63LAURELS PRESENT THAT WONDERFUL 1 9 6 3 TEAR DIRECTORY (Events and Activities— That Wonderful Year ) I Letter From Editor 3 II Dedication 4 III Administration 5 IV Faculty and Curriculum 9 V Seniors 17 VI Juniors 31 VII Sophomores 37 VIII Freshman 45 IX Organizations 53 X Activities 63 XI Advertisements 97 3 — EDITOR’S NOTE On behalf of the annual staff, I sincerely hope that you, the student body of Laurel High School, will enjoy our book of memories covering, That Wonderful Year . It is hard to present all the memorable times on the pages of a book but I feel the ones we have captured will enlighten you for many years to come. Again I hope you will enjoy your annual. 3 DEDICA TION OLD LA UREL HIGH SCHOOL Your windows beamed forth knowledge A mirror to your soul A soul that would will the enemies of truth To pay a large and lasting toll. Your foot-worn stairs tell of the climb Up to knowledges' front door Through which passed those hungry learners Numbering in the thousands and more. Your heavy old desks withstood the years, All the people that have come and gone. If they should have left, in passing their names Then their memory, too, lingers on. As each new turn brought minor changes, As they sometimes do with the years, You kept your gallant purpose untouched, Never harboring any closing fears. But now they say you're old And can serve the purpose no more They're going to strip you of your honor And forever close your door. No more shall you know the great thunder Made by students as they come and go. The fullness and the satisfaction are gone As is the seekers yearning glow. You are to be replaced now By a stronger, larger, one But you may rest, safe in the knowledge You have filled a need well done . --Judy Watson 4 ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT Best wishes to the Senior Class of That Wonderful Year of 1962-63. It has been a year of marked change, a year of the anticipation of wonderful things to come for all members of the student body. For the seniors: The anticipation of college, of jobs, of travel, of many things on the far distant horizon; for the under classmen: the anticipation of new experiences in the new building. As always, the graduating classes will be missed when classes assemble next fall, but we know that you will be thinking.of those 01 us who are left behind. May God Bless You All. PRINCIPAL That Wonderful Year , the theme of this annual, has come and gone for the Class of 1963. Yet there will be other wonderful years to come. How many and how wonderful these years will be will depend in a large measure on how well you have prepared and will prepare yourself--vocationally, socially, emotionally, and morally —for the future years. 6 Board of Education L. A. C. representatives, Gail Klein and Judy Wom-bolt. Mr. Koski, Mr. Neitz, and Mrs. McGarry were our sponsors. We held a dance with a St. Patrick's Day theme which was a big success. Our money making project was a bake sale. Leading our class that sophomore year were: Larry Burns, president; Bonnie Freund, vice-president; Terra Lou Groshelle, treasurer; Phyllis Eggert, secretary; and S. A. C. representatives, Lance Armstrong and Gail Klein. Our class sponsors were Mrs. Greenleaf and Mrs. Russell. Allaine Dittrich and Mark McManus were our king and queen candidates at the Laurel Leaves Dance. The student body wore costumes from the '20 s' at our Roaring Twenties Dance. Our homecoming float took first place that year. That eventful junior year was led by President Jon Fox. Barbara Noel was vice-president, Judy Wombolt was secretary, Gene Ostwald was treasurer, and Barbara Busby and Lanny Moline were S. A. C. representatives. Mr. Blain helped out as our junior class sponsor, aided by Mrs. Greenleaf. Candidates for the Laurel Leaves king and queen were Terry Fukado and Rita Rivard. Our class sponsored the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance with Lance Armstrong and Terra Lou Groshell as our candidates for L'il Abner and Daisy Mae. We sold concessions at the football and basketball games as our main money making project. Our class play, Ask Any Girl , was directed by Mr. Chester Blaylock. The highlight of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom, the theme being Over The Rainbow , which was carried out in the decorations. A banquet was held preceding the prom in honor of the seniors. Girls' State Delegates were Bonnie Freund, Shirley Hanson, and Barbara Busby. Mike Gradwohl, Lanny Moline, Sam Ontko, Bill Bolenske, and Lance Armstrong were chosen to attend Boys' State. Heading our class the wonderful senior year were: Marilyn Frank, president; Larry Burns, vice-president; Judy Branstetter, secretary; Judy Kinds-father, treasurer; and Mary Ann Peterson and Lana Helgeson, S. A. C. representatives. Barbara Noel and Larry Burns were candidates for the Laurel Leaves king and queen. Mrs. Nell Gamble directed our play, The Cannibal Queen . The Daisy Mae and L'il Abner candidates were Barb Hamilton and Gene Ostwald. Looking back over our high school days, we decided on the theme Memories for the Senior Ball. Bonnie Freund and Larry Burns reigned as queen and king over the dance. Hidden talents came to light at class night. Our class had the distinction of being the last class to graduate from the old high school building. On September 21, 1962, the Locomotives won their first Homecoming game where they defeated the Leistown Eagles by a score of 13 to 6. The coronation of Queen Rita Rivard accompanied by her four attendants, Allaine Dittrich, Lana Helge-son, Judy Kindsfather, and Terra Lou Groshelle, highlighted the half-time activities. The loss of the sixteen men who graduated in May will be felt tremendously by the Locomotives, but with juniors such as Dave Weis, Alan Waddel, and Bob Ulschak forming the backbone of next year s team and being supported by the coming strong underclassmen, die future holds much promise for them. The 1962 team elected Leonard Lawyer and Terry Fukado co-captains of the locomotives - Dale Milligan and Terry Fukado received honorable mention for the All-State Team.
