Our Junior-Senior prom was held April 29, 1961, based on the theme Evening in Paris. Preceding the prom, a banquet was held in honor of the senior class of 1961 at the Masonic Temple. Barbara Allan, Rene Smith, and Peggy Jones were elected as delegates to Montana Girls’ State. Boys' State delegates were Kent Harris, Claude Heller, and Dale Rowlison. As seniors, we are nearing our goal. We began our last year by electing Ed Reis-inger as our president. Other officers include Claudia Dobbin, secretary; Claude Heller, treasurer; and Trudy Birkland and Rene Smith SAC representatives. In the fall we participated in our last homecoming by entering a float in the parade, and electing Christy Walton as Homecoming Queen. Her attendants were Rene Smith, Barbara Allan, Kathy Frank and Peggy Jones. The Laurel Leaves dance candidates were Joyce Sidebottom and Kent Harris. Diana Strieker and Leo Kamp were chosen as Daisy Mae and Li'l Abner candidates for the Sadie Hawkins dance. Cheryl Williams was elected as prom queen with Trudy Birkland, Kathy Frank, Gerry Ann Altman, and Gail Fatzinger as her attendants. On April 23 and 24 the seniors put on a very successful production of Tammy Tell Me True under the able direction of Mrs. Nell Gamble. We presented a free masquerade ball for the entire student body at the close of the year. Our class sponsors for this year were Mr. George Chapman and Mr. Robert Barnhart. The class of 1962 will still continue orbiting toward their goal after graduation day. May 29. Even though we leave LHS behind, we will always remember all the fun, joys, and sorrows we have shared together as a class and individual. The match is terminated as a wrestler holds his opponents shoulder in continuous contact with the mat for two full counts. However, when two contestants are evenly matched, this is not always possible. If no fall occurs, a system of scoring is used to determine the winner. This is the first year that Laurel has ever participated in wrestling. Three students, senior Larry Bruce, junior Bob Unterschere, sophomore John Soars, participated in the state wrestling meet held in Great Falls. Larry Bruce took fifth in the state. Though the Laurel boys failed to win their bouts, coach Bob Dantic complimented them on their showing in Laurel’s first year of competitive wrestling. Sousa KwwkL CLAUDE HELLER Claude Heller has been chosen as this year’s John Phillip Sousa Award winner. This award is sponsored by THE INSTRUMENTALIST, a music magazine. The purpose of the award is to honor the top band student of a band and to promote the welfare of the school band. Included in the award is a pin, a certificate, a desk piece, and one's name engraved on the Sousa Plaque hanging in the band room. All of these picture a bust of John Phillip Sousa on them. Claude has been in senior band for four years and has participated in district festivals as a soloist and an ensemble member. Probably the highlight of Claude's high school band days was the performance of his own original march at Commencement exercises May 29, 1962. 70 Elaine Purcell’s Band FIRST PLACE LcuuaaIL SomuI Day The band this year undertook a different sort of project to give students experience in performing in small bands and also to give them experience in directing and taking full responsibility for a band. The band chose four student directors - Elaine Purcell, Gerry Ann Gass, Kent Harris, and Claude Heller. These students then divided the band into four separate bands. The directors each chose two pieces of music, a march and a concert number. The bands practiced on these numbers for Claude Heller's Band SECOND PLACE one week and then on May 18, 1962, the four bands put on performances. The bands were judged by Mr. Grant Newman, band director at Eastern Montana College of Education. After the performances he gave helpful comments to the band as a whole and then to each band individually. He then named the bands in order of rank. Elaine Purcell's band took first place, Claude Heller's band took second place, Kent Harris's band took third place and Gerry Ann Gass’s band took fourth place. This is a small tribute indeed, that the choral students of the class of 62 can pay Miss Berland for all the wonderful music filled days and nights we have spent with her during the past four years. These were years filled with hard work, good times and a few troubles, but under the talented and inspired direction of our favorite lady the show always went on! We are dedicating this page to Miss Berland in appreciation for all the hours she has so freely given to us. Only those who know her can fully ap- preciate her marvelous ability to make every musical experience a thrilling one. We sincerely wish the best of everything to her and the choral depart- ment! 73 President L. H. S. Choral Department REMEMBER WHEN: We had our first rummage sale! Santa Claus visited us!
