Duaine, although just a freshman, was showing great promise for his future high school years. He was an avid sports fan and played halfback on the Junior Varsity football team. Duaine was freshman candidate for Laurel Leaves Dance. In addition to organized sports, Duaine enjoyed outdoor sports such as fishing and hunting. Duaine could always be counted on for a friendly smile and a cheery Hello. ” He was a very congenial boy with a pleasing personality which made many friends for him. The entire student body was saddened on that December day and it is in memory of our good friend and fellow student that we leave this memoriam. 3 Here is your book! We, the Annual Staff, have had it for almost a year and now it is yours. We have attempted to preserve our high school memories through word and picture. You, the students of Laurel High School, made it; you lived it. We wish to express our sincere thanks to Mr. Helgeson, our advisor, and to all those concerned in making this annual what it is. Here it is - the 1961 Laurels. Co-Editors ADMINISTRATION IN YOUTH WE LEARN We hope that Laurel has been a place to develop character by testing, by trying, and by letting it act in a setting such as character in life is expected to act Our purpose has been to replace our generation with a rising generation that is more competent and more able to cope As a society we are on the road to someplace. This is an age of Sputniks, electronics, big cities, nationalism, and leisure All must be sampled, many learned, so that IN AGE WE UNDER- STAND. STAIRWAY TO KNOWLEDGE Stairways are a device to climb to higher things - one step So, too, is education a means of greater achievement - a step at a time In the stream of education, like climbing stairs, one con tinues climbing or one turns around and comes back down Although some of you are completing another step through graduation, another step is ahead, and another, and another. Only through continued climbing can you reach higher and higher From L. toR.j Robert Bums, Jack Mayes, Henry Koppelman, Kenneth Hagemen, Chairman, and Vinton Shay. Although the season was not successful in terms of conference standing, it did show what the future has in store for Laurel football fans. Such fine material as juniors Bob Heiser and Bill Porter, and sophomores Lance Armstrong and Terry Fukado will contribute greatly in future victories. Mr. Kramer and Mr. Neitz became our sponsors. We elected Robert Robertus, President; Sheryl Nave, Vice President; Annette DeCarlo, Secretary; Don Bernhardt, Treasurer; and Rita Wagner and Rickie Frank, SAC representatives. Arlyss Rice and Don Bernhardt were candidates for Daisy Mae and Lil' Abner. King and queen for the Laurel Leaves dance were John Armstrong and Sharon Stewart. We climaxed the year with a dance with the theme, Catch a Falling Star. In the year 1959 we reached the second step on the STAIRWAY OF KNOWLEDGE. Don Bernhardt was elected to head the class. John Armstrong was elected Vice President; Sharon Stewart, Treasurer; Arlyss Rice, Secretary; and Kathy Kucera and George Cole, SAC representatives. Carol Greenough and Jerry Crow were candidates for Daisy Mae and Lil’ Abner. Candidates for Laurel Leaves king and queen were Don Bernhardt and Sharon Stewart. We sponsored a Halloween dance to climax the year. In the year 1960 we were on the third step on the STAIRWAY OF KNOWLEDGE. The junior class elected John Armstrong, President; Jack Parker, Vice President; Rosetta Deines, Treasurer; Karen Stai-ger, Secretary; and J. D. Sherrow and Bruce Frank, SAC representatives. Mrs. McGarry, Miss Morgan, Mr. Neitz, and Mr. Kramer were our class sponsors. Because of impressions our previous teachers had made upon our lives, we chose the motto, In Youth We Learn, In Age We Understand. We chose lavender and silver as our class colors. We sold concessions at the football and basketball games, and sponsored the Sadie Hawkins Dance for our money-making projects. The junior class presented the play, Books and Crooks, under the direction of Mr. Chester Blaylock. Karen Scheeler and Dan Foley were candidates for Daisy Mae and Lil’ Abner. Rita Wagner and Gary Stickleberger were candidates for Laurel Leaves king and queen. The thrill of our junior year was the Junior-Senior prom. We held a banquet in the East School Cafeteria which was served by the mothers of the members of our class. The theme of both banquet and the dance following was With a Song In My Heart. In the year 1961 we reached the top step of the STAIRWAY OF KNOWLEDGE. To lead us to the top were Bruce Frank, President; Roberta Strending, Vice President; Karen Scheeler, Treasurer; Arlyss Rice, Secretary; and Rosetta Deines and Pat Pfister, SAC representatives. Pat Vernon and Henry Weber were candidates for Laurel Leaves king and queen. Seeing our wonderful high school days retrospectively, we decided upon the theme Moments to Remember for the senior ball. Our play, Meet Me in St. Louis, was directed by Mrs. Nell Gamble. Many hidden talents were revealed at our class night. Upon graduating from Laurel High School, May 23, 1961, we realized the STAIRWAY OF KNOWLEDGE reached to infinity. Our parents, teachers, and friends encouraged us to keep climbing. Not only did they encourage us then, but they have inspired us to continue up this stairway throughout our future lives. 93 ADVERTISERS fp zn tt€si Incorporated Refinery Division Refinery Laurel, Montana Main Office St. Paul, Minnesota Division Office Billings, Montana Premium Products for Cooperatives Platinum Refined Gasoline Congratulations to the Graduates of 1961 Refiners Marketers Producers SCOTT’S DRY CLEANERS LAUNDRY Pickup and Delivery Every Day Phone 698-4706 Phone AL 9-4191 - Billings Self Service Laundry and Dry Cleaning Facilities LAUREL CO-OP ASSOCIATION 800 East Main Car Service 698-6314 Phone 214 Farm Delivery THE YELLOWSTONE BANKS Laurel Columbus The Banks of Service Ctf WOLD’S DEPARTMENT STORE Laurel's Own Congratulations Store for Over to the Graduates 50 Years THE LAUREL CREAMERY Makers of Rose Brand Butter and Ice Cream If It's Rose Brand It Has to Be Good.
