High school life in all its vital movements, its thrilling action, and its treasurable traditions is a life which sweetens memory and makes the trip into the past an excursion of pleasant reflections. In later years while turning these pages if the silhouettes of the 1958-59 school year bring you pleasant memories and joy, we shall be content in knowing that our task has been accomplished. Co-Editors, DEDICATION It is with a great deal of pleasure that the annual staff dedicates the 1959 Laurels to William Price, who has served as head custodian of the Laurel Junior and Senior High Schools for the past twenty-two years. Known by everyone as Bill, he has proved to be a dependable and capable man who has won the respect of the student body, faculty, and administration. He was always ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed. At one time Mr. Price even served as a substitute teacher in the T I and Industrial Arts Departments. His great pride and joy was keeping the floors polished to a mirror-bright shine, especially the gym floor. A more highly-polished gym floor could not be found in any school. With his retirement we sincerely wish him many years of happiness and hope that he has a lot of luck and enjoyment in his favorite pastime - fishing. He will surely be missed by everyone about the halls of our school. administration PRINCIPAL William A. West CLERK Mrs. Roxene Harman MRS. Jim Armstrong and Karen Groshelle were elected their Laurel Leaves King and Queen, and Sandie Stoltz and Stanley Kautz were their candidates for the Sadie Hawkins Dance and were chosen the Daisy Mae and Li'l Abner at the dance. Electing officers for the second time in high school they elected: Guy Lamb, president; Dennis Feuerbaucher, vice president; Stanley Kautz, treasurer; Sandie Stoltz, secretary; and Karen Groshelle and Marcia Dobson, S. A. C. representatives. The class had a caramel apple sale and held an April Fools Dance March 29. They worked hard. The junior year with Mr. Neely, Miss Pat Morgan, and Mrs. Greenleaf, the class sold concessions at the football and basketball games. Other money-making projects they had were a Topsy-Turvey dance on October 19, a bake sale, a candy sale, and selling purple and gold pom-poms at the ballgames. The money earned from these various projects went toward the Prom and Banquet which was held May 3. Their class play, Crewcuts and Longhairs, was held January 28 and 29 under the direction of Mrs. Nell Gamble with Mrs. Caroline Phillips and Mrs. Erma Badt as assistants. Laurel Leaves candidates for King and Queen were Deanna Mayes and Dennis Feuerbacher. Daisy Mae and LiT Abner were Diana Herman and Bradley Krause. The Senior Play, under the able direction of Mrs. Gamble, was entitled THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 16th. Eighty-eight seniors received their diplomas on the night of May 26. Quill and Scroll Initiation, preceded by a pitch-in supper, was held March 9. Those initiated were Sharon Kamp, Carol Boylan, Judy Kline, Harley Leach, Dan Gray, Jim Baker, Joe Hoppel, Carolyn Lehr, Fred Feuer-bacher, Dennis Ricci, Judy Johnston, Glenda Ness, Carol Bezdek, Georgia Hartman, and Carol Arnold. Glenda Ness received first in the local American Legion Auxiliary Essay Contest. Halleck Brenden also brought honor to LHS as the alternate in the state of Montana in the National Council of English Merit Scholars. He has been offered various scholarships and was also awarded $50 in state competition for his medical essay. During the basketball season Quill and Scroll distributed programs at all games to the public. Directly connected with the school paper, Quill and Scroll financially, as well as literarily, published the Looney Leaves, a spring edition. At the spring initiation in May, Bill Edison, Karen Stevens, Lucy O’Rourke, Sandra Whitfield, Larry Fujio, Don Nottingham, Martin Lawrenz, and Jane Huntington became members. Also at this concluding affair of the year, Mr. Campbell Calvert, Sr. became an honorary member of the society. He was presented with a membership scroll, and Mrs. Lois Elda Larson, the sponsor, was presented with a corsage and painting. LARRY SHAY - Grand Award; Second, Chemistry (Midland Empire Science Fair) CLIFFORD BEAN - Honorable Mention, Junior Biology; Second, Botany (Midland Empire Science Fair) JOHN ARMSTRONG - Honorable Mention, Junior Biology; Honorable Mention, Zoology (Midland Empire Science Fair) Approximately 240 entries were on display at the First Laurel Science Fair. Chemistry instructor Mr. Jack Neitz, biology instructor Mrs. Genevieve McGarry, and physics instructor Mr. Robert Bennett were responsible for the addition of fair projects to this year's science curriculum. Ribbons were awarded to the first, second, and third place projects in every field. First place winners also received subscriptions to Science World, a magazine written especially for high school readers. Because the number of entries in each section varied, the number of honorable mentions was indefinite. Four students received awards at the Midland Empire Science Fair in Billings. Clifford Bean’s project, Balanced Diet for Plants, and Larry Shay's project, Soil Analysis, placed second in the fields of botany and chemistry. These awards entitled their projects to go to the State Fair held in Missoula. The other two Laurel awards went to John Armstrong’s entry. Comparing of Blood Circulation in Vertebrates, and Ronald Walton's entry, Man - Past, Present, and Future. These two earned honorable mentions in the zoology division. The success of this Science Fair gave a very good indication that this will be an established annual event. 18 Dennis Maxson and Bob Middleton's Tesla coil attracted much of the attention during the fair with its sparks flying about. Their project placed second in the physics division. AlasI Alas! It’s back to school. Miles City, out first football game; we lost - tsk, tsk - what a shame! The Laurel Leaves Dance! Deanna and Dennis wore our crown, but the freshmen won the count-down. A big bonfire in the park. A snake dance in the streets at dark. At our first Homecoming Karen did reign with Deanna, Sylvia, Norma, and Sandie holding her train. FHA Convention in Livingston today, it was lots of fun and lots of play. During M. E. A. Convention we had a two-day rest, while the teachers decided for our futures what was best. Witches, goblins, and horror to top all the fun we had at the Halloween Hop. Our first choir concert of the year. Snarthia Gabfast, the talent scout, was here. Open House. A shot gun wedding, moonshine and all - at the Sadie Hawkins Dance we had a ball! Ping Pong pictures were taken - students were shaken. Band Concert. Turkey to start with, a diet to end - Thanksgiving vacation has come again. The juniors presented their class play. A Date With Judy was clever and gay. A sleigh ride in the country, caroling in the snow, then a potluck supper, and entertainment by Cole. This started the Christmas Sox Hop put on by the chorus and band. We sang and danced and paid one cent an inch on the foot of every man. The Christmas Concert was beautiful; it presented a-Nativity scene, a sleigh ride and a Christmas fantasy; it was all like a beautiful dream. Christmas vacation began today at four P. M. Another new year will have started when we meet again At the Christmas Formal everyone was there, the girls all looked so pretty with sprigs of holly in their hair. Billings Central played here ionite; we lost but we put up a good fight. Spanish Club Dance! We rumbaed, sambaed, tangoed, cha cha chaed, and altogether disobeyed the gravity laws. At the basketball game Glendive was here. They fought long and hard but we won - give a cheer! At long last Laurel had earned the fame of finally winning a basketball game. After our victory, of which you all know, we went dancing - thanks to Quill and Scroll. The band presented its concert today. It’s the first winter concert they will play. We played on Billings Central's home floor. We won by two points and just made the score! FHA Chili Supper - Yum, Yum, Yum! On the Night of January 16, Karen did kill a corpse by pushing it over a sill. The audience jury decided her case, not by facts, but by her pretty face. Hearts, brains and other insides, atomic arms, and microscope slides - these were at our Science Fair. You name it - it was there! To the Band Parents' Dance came Mom and Dad. You should see them if you think Rock and Roll's bad. The basketball tournament was held at the Shrine. We were at the bottom of the ladder, but boy did we climb. The team played valiantly on the floor, and we climbed clear up to number four! The Laurelaire Spring Concert came off with a bang. Of course we knew it would when the Laurelaires sang. Easter Vacation to celebrate the Lord's resurrection date. Choir trip to Broadview, Lavina and Roundup. 87 SCHOOL CALENDAR (Continued) April 7: April 11 April 24 April 28 May 1: May 2: May 8-9 May 13 May 19 May 22-23 May 24 May 26: Rich man, poor man, beggar man or thief, doctor, lawyer, Indian chief. Career Day was held in Laurel to see what each student could possibly be. The Senior Ball to celebrate the quickening arrival of the graduation date. The last Chorus Concert the seniors will know, they put on a surprise variety show. Tri-County Band Festival. The bands came from miles around, one from every different town. High School Week in Bozeman was a big affair; our scholars from Laurel represented us there. The prom was the juniors’ graduation gift to the departing seniors; it gave us quite a lift. All-State Music Festival really was a lot of fun, not to mention the prizes we won. Senior Visitation Day. We went, we saw, we conquered. Honors were given here at Awards Assembly, for what we did through the year. State Track Meet at Missoula. Baccalaureate - a word to the wise, your capacities are boundless - you can climb to the skies. If you will apply all that you know, there is no limit to how far you can go. Graduation Day has finally come, and it's sad now when we remember all the fun. But it will be of interest to see what each of us will be. j r'QcLcLj ? iVemenorT vJW WHO?
