Senior Class History We, the graduates of the Class of '56. leave our footprints on the sands of time with pleasant memories that will stay with us through the many years ahead. In September. 1953, 89 freshmen took their first steps to start their four long years of high school. Sponsored by MR. ROBERT SAWHILL. we chose as our officers: BILL SCALISE, president; CAROL KLEIN, secretary; CAROLYN HURZELER. treasurer; RONNIE WRIGHT and MARY ELLEN ALBERTUS, S.A.C. representatives. The class sponsored cooky and candy sales, and they presented the first Sadie Hawkins Day Dance on February 21 with JOYCE BERNHARDT and BILL SCALISE as Daisy Mae and Little Abner. In the mock election. GEORGE STEVENSON was the freshman judge, and ANNABELLE ZAGAR and MARGE BYRD were elected clerks. JOYCE BERNHARDT and JOE VISSER were the freshman candidates for Laurel Leaves King and Queen. The class voted to accept the three-year contract for class rings. And so, one year was completed and we trod the halls of Laurel High as sophomores. We again sponsored the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance. BEVERLY WILSON and DAVEY ALFERS were Daisy Mae and Little Abner. We sponsored a novel dance honoring the Basketball team and titled it “Basket Ball. Sophomore Laurel Leaves King and Queen were DICK KASS and MARY ELLEN ALBERTUS. Officers for our sophomore year were: OLLIE ANDREWS, president; SHARON MICHAEL, vice president; GLADYS HUGHES, secretary; MARY ELLEN ALBERTUS. treasurer; NORMA BROWN and CAROLYN HURZELER, S.A.C. representatives. Our class sponsor was MR. ROBERT SAWHILL. Finally we took our big step as upperclassmen and our junior year proved to be very important and a year of hard work. As juniors we sold concessions at football and basketball games and at a square dance. We sponsored after-school sales and also a bake sale. Of course, all this money was for our Prom and Banquet which was held April 30 after long hours of work and many more hours of just plain fun to turn out a Prom and Banquet, the theme being “Along the Nile.” We sponsored the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance with SHARON BEHM and RONNIE MIKEL as Daisy Mae and Little Abner. Our class play, directed by MISS CHARLOTTE SEVERANCE was held December 7 and 8 and titled “We Shook the Family Tree.” The Girls’ State Candidates were MARY ANNE VAUGHN. MARY ELLEN ALBERTUS. ANNE GRAY. JOYCE BERNHARDT. CAROL KLEIN, SHARON MICHAEL. SHIRLEY BRANO. and BERNADINE GETZ. SHARON MICHAEL and MARY ELLEN ALBERTUS were chosen representatives to go to Billings for Girls’ State. The three boys chosen to attend Boys’ State were: MAYNARD KASNER. LEE DAVIS, and WALLY NELSON. We had two sponsors our junior year; they were MISS PAT MORGAN, and MR. ART VENTSCH. The class officers were: MARY ELLEN ALBERTUS, president; MAYNARD KASNER. vice president; ANNABELLE ZAGAR. secretary; MARY ANNE VAUGHN, treasurer; and PHYLLIS JORDAN and MARILEE McLARNON, S.A.C. representatives. As seniors our final step was taken in completing high school. That year went faster it seemed than any other year. We elected as officers: MAYNARD KASNER, president; WALLY NELSON, vice president; JOYCE BERNHARDT, secretary; MARY ANNE VAUGHN, treasurer; and ANNABELLE ZAGAR and LEE DAVIS as S.A.C. representatives. Our sponsor was MR. ART VENTSCH. As in the years before, we sponsored a bigger and better Sadie Hawkins Day Dance and and presented it to the class of ’60 to carry on throughout their four years of high school. Daisy Mae and Little Abner were JOYCE BERNHARDT and WALLY NELSON. We had a candy sale and in the spring started planning for our Skip day which we had Senior Week and spent the day at Chico Hot Springs. Baccalaureate was May 20 and then the long awaited Commencement. May 24. in the gym. So, we were graduated, and although our footprints are fading from High SchooL they shall march on to newer and brighter heights.
