Ollie’s lovely personality and friendliness have left a warm spot in the heart of each of us who knew her. We, as seniors, are proud to dedicate this annual to her memory. The staff of the 1956 Laurels wishes to express its thanks and appreciation to the Farmers Union Central Exchange, Inc., for its sponsorship of the end sheets of this annual. We would like to give our thanks to the 1955 Laurels staff for their contribution toward the purchase of our new speed graphic camera. Thanks also go to Stuart Hall for his cooperation in taking and developing pictures before the camera arrived and his instruction in its use after its arrival. Special thanks go to Miss Diane Brown for the use of her foot for the print on this page. The theme of our annual this year is “Memories in Footprints” and is carried out on the division pages by feet and footprints in various arrangements. We hope these original arrangements will help you recall your high school days in the years to come. FRED W. GRAFF. B.A. University of Minnesota Superintendent WILLIAM A. WEST. B.A.. M ED. Mammy Yokum and Pappy Yokum Senior Class History We, the graduates of the Class of '56. leave our footprints on the sands of time with pleasant memories that will stay with us through the many years ahead. In September. 1953, 89 freshmen took their first steps to start their four long years of high school. Sponsored by MR. ROBERT SAWHILL. we chose as our officers: BILL SCALISE, president; CAROL KLEIN, secretary; CAROLYN HURZELER. treasurer; RONNIE WRIGHT and MARY ELLEN ALBERTUS, S.A.C. representatives. The class sponsored cooky and candy sales, and they presented the first Sadie Hawkins Day Dance on February 21 with JOYCE BERNHARDT and BILL SCALISE as Daisy Mae and Little Abner. In the mock election. GEORGE STEVENSON was the freshman judge, and ANNABELLE ZAGAR and MARGE BYRD were elected clerks. JOYCE BERNHARDT and JOE VISSER were the freshman candidates for Laurel Leaves King and Queen. The class voted to accept the three-year contract for class rings. And so, one year was completed and we trod the halls of Laurel High as sophomores. We again sponsored the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance. BEVERLY WILSON and DAVEY ALFERS were Daisy Mae and Little Abner. We sponsored a novel dance honoring the Basketball team and titled it “Basket Ball. Sophomore Laurel Leaves King and Queen were DICK KASS and MARY ELLEN ALBERTUS. Officers for our sophomore year were: OLLIE ANDREWS, president; SHARON MICHAEL, vice president; GLADYS HUGHES, secretary; MARY ELLEN ALBERTUS. treasurer; NORMA BROWN and CAROLYN HURZELER, S.A.C. representatives. Our class sponsor was MR. ROBERT SAWHILL. Finally we took our big step as upperclassmen and our junior year proved to be very important and a year of hard work. As juniors we sold concessions at football and basketball games and at a square dance. We sponsored after-school sales and also a bake sale. Of course, all this money was for our Prom and Banquet which was held April 30 after long hours of work and many more hours of just plain fun to turn out a Prom and Banquet, the theme being “Along the Nile.” We sponsored the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance with SHARON BEHM and RONNIE MIKEL as Daisy Mae and Little Abner. Our class play, directed by MISS CHARLOTTE SEVERANCE was held December 7 and 8 and titled “We Shook the Family Tree.” The Girls’ State Candidates were MARY ANNE VAUGHN. MARY ELLEN ALBERTUS. The three boys chosen to attend Boys’ State were: MAYNARD KASNER. LEE DAVIS, and WALLY NELSON. We had two sponsors our junior year; they were MISS PAT MORGAN, and MR. ART VENTSCH. The class officers were: MARY ELLEN ALBERTUS, president; MAYNARD KASNER. vice president; ANNABELLE ZAGAR. secretary; MARY ANNE VAUGHN, treasurer; and PHYLLIS JORDAN and MARILEE McLARNON, S.A.C. representatives. We elected as officers: MAYNARD KASNER, president; WALLY NELSON, vice president; JOYCE BERNHARDT, secretary; MARY ANNE VAUGHN, treasurer; and ANNABELLE ZAGAR and LEE DAVIS as S.A.C. representatives. Our sponsor was MR. ART VENTSCH. As in the years before, we sponsored a bigger and better Sadie Hawkins Day Dance and and presented it to the class of ’60 to carry on throughout their four years of high school. Daisy Mae and Little Abner were JOYCE BERNHARDT and WALLY NELSON. We had a candy sale and in the spring started planning for our Skip day which we had Senior Week and spent the day at Chico Hot Springs. Baccalaureate was May 20 and then the long awaited Commencement. May 24. in the gym. So, we were graduated, and although our footprints are fading from High SchooL they shall march on to newer and brighter heights. On the field, Maynard was always trying to cheer up some downhearted teammates who were getting discouraged. Although the trainmen suffered a bad season, it was Kasner’s drive and ability to spark a team w'hich prevented the season from being even more drastic. Maynard has the reputation of being a go-getter. He has a job to do and he does it with the best possible results. The team of ’56 wishes Maynard luck and will miss him and his great play in the coming football season. Being switched from the backfield to the line proved no hurdle for JACK HOPPEL. He played first-string guard all year and co-captained the Laurel Squad. Highlights for Hoppel during the season were many. The biggest thrill for him was the runback of a punt in the Hardin game. With Jack’s leadership, the team continually improved until the end. Hoppel, although he played football for four years, never missed a practice. This is a record that few will equal. The squad of ’56 will miss his heads-up line play and the making of decisions in which he prided himself. LEE DAVIS, senior tackle and two-year letter-man, played his last season of high school football in a very fine manner. Lee was known as the team clown on and off the field. He was the spark plug on the locomotive forward wall and could handle himself in gridiron battles. 56 Season NON-CONFERENCE I.aurel 7 Columbus 6 Laurel _ 0 Livingston 32 CONFERENCE Laurel 7 Miles Citv 18 Laurel 13 Havre 39 Laurel 26 Glasgow 32 I.aurel 13 I wistown 32 Laurel 25 Hardin 17 Laurel 13 Billings Central 32 his first year of var- sive guard.
