For her untiring efforts in helping to publish this yearbook, her guidance during the year, her helpful advice, and the willingness to give her valuable time to the production of the yearbook, without which, it would have been impossible to make this book what it is. She has given up many hours of her time to help us, and so to her we say, Thanks for everything, and to her, we dedicate this 1955 Laurels; may it always remind her of our hardships in editing this book. Miss Helen Kamerzell '? ne(v nd The staff of the 1955 Laurels has tried to make this yearbook of interest to all students. We have carried the silhouette theme throughout its pages depicting the various phases of the school year. We would at this time, like to thank the Farmers Union Central Exchange for sponsoring the end sheets. We are grateful to all who have helped by advertising in these pages. We would like to thank Erickson's Studio who have hleped us a great deal with our photography, and Stuart Hall who furnished the pictures for our end sheets and the cover design. The staff is very proud of this annual, and we hope that all who read it will receive many hours of enjoyment from it. 3 MR. FRED W. GRAFF Superintendent MR. WILLIAM A. WEST Principal Sponsor: S. Class Play 4 20 Seatot The fall of 1951 found the present class of 1955 hopefully entering the doors of Laurel High School for the first time. Under the supervision of MISS ROSE SAMPSON, class sponsor, and the leadership of DUANE TIN-NES, president; SHIRLEY FRANK, vice-president; LARRY HORNING, secretary; RONALD MARKOVICH, treasurer; and SAC representatives, ED LEUTHOLD and PAT PRICE; the class got a good start in school participation. ALVINA HUSCHKA and DEAN FRANK received the Laurel Leaves crowns, with the freshman class selling the most subscriptions to the Laurel Leaves. During their sophomore year the class decided to buckle down and really show everyone that they were important too. MISS HELEN NELSON, new class sponsor, helped the class in their effort to make money by having sales and by sponsoring a Valentine's dance. ARLENE JOHNSON, sophomore class nominee, represented Laurel in the kid's day sweetheart contest. Class officers for the year were: ED LEUTHOLD, president; JOHN STRECKER, vice-president; DAVID GROLL, secretary; PHYLLIS NOEL, treasurer; and AMY ALLWIN and ELMER BROWN, SAC representatives. Finding themselves faced with the task of putting on the prom and banquet in honor of the seniors, the juniors immediately set about selling at all the football and basketball games. Their money-making schemes proved successful as their prom and banquet, carried through with a spring garden theme, was an outstanding affair. RITA FUJIO was elected by the class and the school to be Miss Laurel in the kid's day sweetheart contest. Follow the Dream was successfully staged as the junior class play under the direction of MISS JEANNE GUNDERSON. Our class again sold the most subscriptions to the Laurel Leaves and RONNIE MARKOVICH and RITA FUJIO were crowned king and queen. MARJORIE REITER and VIRGINIA COMER were elected to go to Girls' State and ED LEUTHOLD, LANCE VADNAIS, and JOHN HERINK attended Boys' State. Class officers were ED LEUTHOLD, president; DUANE TINNES, vice-president; VIRGINIA GOMER, secretary; JIM KAISERMAN, treasurer; and BOB LANE and LANCE VADNAIS, SAC representatives. MISS HELEN NELSON and MISS PAT MORGAN were co-advisors of the class. At the start of their last year, the seniors set about on the job of getting out their annual. DAVID GROLL edited the yearbook and MLSS HELEN KAMERZELL was the advisor. The senior class play, Jenny Kissed Me, directed by MISS JEANNE GUNDERSON, was termed a huge success. VICKY BRADFORD and ED LEUTHOLD edited the Laurel Leaves to an All-State rating. Class members were very proud when CLAYTON HAGEN received his appointment to West Point. MR. WEST announced the honor students: VIRGINIA GOMER, Valedictorian; JUDY WOODWARD, Salutator-ian; JOHN HERINK, third; and ED LEUTHOLD, fourth. Baccalaureate services were held May 22. Class officers for the year were ED LEUTHOLD, president; DUANE TINNES, vice-president; VIRGINIA GOMER, secretary; DAVID GROLL, treasurer; and JOHN HERINK and AMY ALLWIN SAC representatives. Class sponsor was MRS. MARGARET FRETTE. On May 26, seventy-six eager, and yet sad, seniors marched into the gym to receive their diplomas. Four years of struggling, and four years of joy were over. Only God knows what Fate has in store for the class of 1955. CLASS MOTTO: CLASS COLORS: CLASS FLOWER: Seek and Ye Shall Find. Orchid and Pearl Orchid 21 Herink reads history. As Freshmen, they sponsored the first Sadie Hawkins' Dance and have continued with it every year. Their class play, We Shook the Family Tree, was held December 7 and 8 with Miss Charlotte Severance as director. The Girls' State candidates were Mary Anne Vaughn, Mary Ellen Albertus, Anne Gray, Joyce Bernhardt, Carol Klein, Sharon Michael, Shirley Brano, and Bernadine Getz. During the first year. Miss Roscoe was given the job of sponsoring the class and helping the frosh over any difficulties that should arise. At the first class meeting the following students were elected to office: Po Murry, president; John Cromwell, vice-president; Barbara Williams, SAC representative; Lorrene Horner, activity chairman; and Orene Price, secretary-treasurer. RED LODGE GAME The 54 Locomotives' football season proved to be successful in statistics as well as in spirit and sportsmanship, for the Locomotives finished with a 4-1 conference record. The members of the squad, primarily seniors, displayed throughout the year a definite will to win and on varied occasions demonstrated their capability to be good losers --the virtue so necessary to a well rounded team. The season's opener for the Locomotives came as a pitfall as the Powell Panthers humbled the locals 32-0 in a non-conference game. The contest verified the fact that Laurel lacked actual game competition and that both teams possessed great room for improvement. The game proved very costly to the Locomotives as co-captain DUANE TINNES injured his ankle which hampered his play throughout the remainder of the season. The Locomotives wasted little time avenging their loss to Powell as the following week they handed the Hardin Bulldogs an 8-0 defeat. The game was marked by fierce defense as the Locomotives consistently downed the Bulldogs behind the line of scrimmage, once for a safety. Balmy afternoon sun seemed to encourage the Locomotives as the Big Timber Sheep-herders were the next mark in their win column. The Trainmen cleared their way to a convincing 32-0 win. 46 Lane Slater Wold 'Joat all Seemingly not to be stopped, Laurel roared to a decisive 46-0 victory over a large but inexperienced Red Lodge team. Sophomore DICK SCHARDT again and again broke loose for long gains proving himself an invincible cog in the Locomotive machine. In a spectacular crowd thriller the Billings Central RamS handed the Locomotives their first defeat of the season by a skimming margin of one point--20-19. The turning point of the game came when Laurel drove to the Central three but failed to score. ED LEUTHOLD, co-captain, illustrated a game of noteworthy ball as he continually broke up potential Billings touchdowns. A partially over-confident Laurel team lost to the Harlowton Engineers, 2b-13 in a morale-shattering game on the Locomotive home field. This unexpected loss dropped Laurel from the running for a divisional championship. Fullback BOB LANE repeatedly shook loose for long gains to lead Laurel's offensive drives. Neither snow or rain could hamper the Locomotives' rampaging spirits as they defeated the Columbus Cougars 34-0 to wrap up their 54 season with a 4 and 1 conference record. Laurel's defense was plainly evident as they repulsed a Columbus touchdown after the Cougars had driven to the Laurel six-inch line. Credit should be given to ROBERT KAUTZ for his fine work at tackle. On defense and offense he continually broke through to make many tackles and open up holes. The combination of JIM KAISERMAN and DUANE TINNES proved to be a very efficient pass combination as they chalked up many yards and touchdowns. At a special meeting of the football team, JACK HOPPEL and MAYNARD KASNER were elected co-captains of the team for the year of '55. i Herink Co-captains Leuthold and D. The 55 Laurel Locomotive varsity basketball team proved to be one of the most outstanding in the Southern Division. After completing the conference season with a 13-8 win and loss record, the Locomotives showed well in the Southern Division Class B tournament by taking fourth place, after competing in five contests. JOHN HERINK and DUANE TINNES were elected co-captains as a reward for their fine play during the 54-'55 season. John averaged 21 points per game during the season from his center position and was top all-tournament scorer, putting in 109 points in the five tourney games. DUANE TINNES, JIM KAISERMAN and BOB LANE, all returning lettermen and graduating seniors, put in brilliant performances throughout the season both as individual players and as a team. The Locomotives were definitely hampered when ROGER WOLD, an outstanding senior forward, broke his ankle during the Christmas vacation and was unable to complete the remainder of the season. KENNY JACKSON, an exceptional sophomore athlete, rounded out the first five and became a standout as a rebounder throughout the division, as well as having a 6. 3-point-per-game scoring average. BILL ARMSTRONG, WALLY NELSON, WARREN MEYERS, FRED HUNTINGTON, and MAYNARD KASNER did extremely well when they were called for relief support. Each member was given the chance to perform at the tournament and each showed that he could be first string material in years to come. 58 ‘Saa. et ziC Herink tips one in in the Powell game. 59 BACK ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Bernie Barr, Manager; Gary Michael, Dale Freeburg, Wesley Watkins, Don Sekora, Glenn Altimus, Jerry McArthur, and Pete Tracy. Although Laurel outscored their opponents 989 points to 974 points, they came out short one game as they finished the season with a 10-win and 11-loss record. The scoring chart was topped by Bill Armstrong and Don Sekora throughout the season with the cabooses. Despite the fact that Armstrong spent only a little over half the season with the cabooses, he led in scoring until the last weeks when lanky Don Sekora took over scoring honors with 169 points. In a situation rare to B squad members, Armstrong was transferred from the first five on the cabboses to the A team and soon worked his way up to a first string guard position. Fred Huntington also was promoted to the varsity from the secondary squad. Pat Giblin, forward, and Wesley Watkins, center, led the junior varsity in the rebounding department and in future years these two sophomores should prove to be valuable assets to Laurel's upcoming A squads. Most people fail to realize the primary importance of B teams and take the attitude that they are out there to win games and that's all. Well, the truth of the matter is that B teams are mainly a place to improve a player's ability and to make a better all-around sport of him so as to prepare him for the varsity squads in future years. The Laurel Chapter of Quill and Scroll, an international honorary society for high school journalists, initiated 15 new members during the 1954-55 school term. Membership is granted on a basis of journalistic endeavors and scholastic standing. All initiates are active workers on the Laurel Leaves newspaper publications staff and it will be the duty of these new members to back the publications and help in making the newspaper a success, both literally and financially. This year's Quill and Scroll officers include Jerry Geise, president; Virginia Gomer, vice-president; Donna Deis, secretary; Jeanette Anest, treasurer; and Vicky Bradford, student council representative. The group had several projects to keep them active, one being the selling of Student Courtesy Cards to be used in Fox Intermountain Theaters. The profits made from the sales enabled the Chapter, along with the Laurel Leaves, to send five journalists to the Montana Interscholastic Editorial Association meet at Montana State University. The group also co-sponsored the first dance of the school year; that being the Inkslinger1 s Ball. Later in the term they again sponsored a Soc Hop. Students were charged per inch of foot for an admission price. Profits from these dances were used to aid the school newspaper in its publication expenses. Mrs. Lois Elda Larson is the sponsor of this group. 62 “Pefr This year the Pep Club wrote and accepted a constitution containing rules and regulations to be carried out in the future.
