One dollar an issue since '32 is the standdby slogan of the Laurel Leaves in its twenty-fourth year of publication. Mrs. Lois Elda Larson, advisor of the Leaves has guided the paper to all-state, issued at Interscholastic by the University Journalism Department, first place in National Scholastic Press, sweep stakes in the state of Montana Quill Scroll, first place in editorials in the state as judged by Sigma Delta Chi, and gaining the coveted presidency of the State Editorial Association. Laurel Leaves was elected president of MIEA for 1953 and Kay Williams presided at the fall meeting at MSU. Editor-in-chief Wilma Kamp, and Kay Williams and Bob Bryan, associate editors, were instrumental, with the co-operation of thirty-two journalists and forty members of the volunteer staff, in making many notable improvements in the Leaves which were: five columns to replace the former four, a new head, added features, and increased artistry from the shutter bugs. Laurel was the only school in the state of Montana to place in every field of Journalism as judged by the National Journalism Fraternity, Sigma Delta Chi. Kathleen Gary wrote and published the best editorial in the state earning a personal trophy and one for the school. These awards have been given only two years; and last year, first was also merited by an LHS student, Joan Murphy. Sweepstakes were earned by John Herink, editorial; June Zager, news story; Jim Cantrell, sports story. Especially notable is the fact that the largest circulation in the history o? the Leaves was attained this year. Staff heads other than the editors were LaRue Ostwalt, business manager; Ann Bishop, ad manager; Kathleen Gary, correlation manager; Louanne Campbell, feature editor; Betty Kass, alumni; Sharen Foote, circulation; Jeanne Chalmers, exchange; June Zagar, news editor; Jim Cantrell, sports; Laurie Adams, copy reader; Betty Reiter, chief typist. The Silver Key which is annualy awarded to the outstanding journalist was earned by June Zagar.
