football Laurel opened the '5 3 season against the Billings Junior Varsity at Laurel, the Trainmen winning 20-0. Poor ball handling was evident as an opening game for both clubs. Laurel did prove that their defense was not to be laughed at as they consistently stopped their opponents behind the line of scrimmage. The Locomotives dropped their second game of the season to the Hardin Bulldogs 20 8 at Hardin. The Laurel crew couldn't seem to get started in the terrific heat of one of their two afternoon games during the season. Laurel consistently brought the ball into scoring territory but failed to converge in all but one attempt. Laurel's loss to Red Lodge. 13-0. at Laurel, proved to be the loss that hurt the most. It was their only conference defeat of the season. The Trainmen's offense was ripped apart throughout the game, partially due to the loss of their quarterback. Duane Tinncs. Defensively, the locals played the finest ball thus far in the year. Laurel completed their season as said by most fans when they overran the rival Billings Central 14-6 at Laurel. The first half was entirely dominated by the Central eleven, the halftime score. 6-0. Laurel came on the field in the second half with a full head of steam to score 14 points. All eleven players contributed their part to winning this game and overcoming the losing streaks to win the remainder of the season’s games. The dieselized Trainmen derailed the Harlowton Engineers 21-13 at Harlo in what appeared to be one of the most exciting games of the season. The half time score was knotted at 7-7: at the end of the third period Laurel led 14 13. In the closing minutes Harlo made a desperate but futile attempt to gain a touchdown when the Locomotives intercepted a pass and went all the way. Recognition cannot be denied the three linemen. Jay Kaiserman. Ed Leuthold and Bob Lane for their outstanding line work. In their second afternoon game of the '53 season Laurel completely overran the Columbus Cougars 28-0 at Columbus. Bob Schessler with the help of fine blocking sparked the Locomotives ground play. He averaged 21.3 yards per try. The Locomotives wrapped up their final game over the Big Timber Sheephcrders 34 6 at Laurel. Early in the second quarter Laurel began to dominate the game with a series of passes that did not end throughout the remaining quarters. Duane Tinnes completed 14 of his 17 pass attempts for the largest air gain in conference play.

Fighting as the New York Yankees, the Harlem Globetrotters. and the Champion volleying team, the GAA girls displayed their ability in three tournaments; softball, basketball, volleyball. Inconveniences beset the GAA due to construction on the new building, necessitating the use of the East School Gym. Meetings were held weekly and biweekly, weather permitting. Financial activities centered on a sale of a hand-tooled leather purse and a flash camera. Play Day festivities in Powell, Wyoming were attended by June Paronto, Norma Brown, Mary Ann Vaughn, Ollie Andrews, Helen Cantrell, Gay Leather-man, Fern Ness, Beverly Wilson, Maria Kelly, Donna Deis, and Joan Hunting-ton. Attending the Billings Play Day were Norma Brown, Ollie Andrews, Fern Ness, Marilee McLarnon, and Gay Leatherman.
