DEDICATION In honor of Miss Roscoe—who has given so much of her time and received so little in return, we respectfully dedicate the 1953 Laurels. The senior class feels very fortunate in having a sponsor who has been so willing and untiring in her efforts to further the class as a whole. During the four years that Miss Roscoe has sponsored the class we have achieved much in all fields, both scholastically and as far as extracurricular activities are concerned. The class of ’53, therefore, feels very proud to be able in some way to repay what Miss Roscoe has done for us.

F O R E W O R D The pages of this book are of interest to all the students of Laurel High School, being a source of enjoyment today as they reflect your present interests and view points; they will also bea source of enjoyment tomorrow when they will be reviewed by those matured in years and responsibilities. These pages will be particularly of interest to the members of the class of 1953 whose creation it is. They will also be of considerable interest to the public, giving as they do another view of that great American institution—the public schools. —Superintendent Fred W. Graff. The staff of this 1953 Laurels wishes to express thanks and appreciation to the Farmers Union Central Exchange, Inc., for the part it has played in the production of the yearbook by sponsoring the end sheets of this annual and providing the photographs used on division pages. These photographs show the result of the expansion program which was completed last year and which makes the Laurel Refinery one of the most modern in the world. These new facilities included a catalytic cracking unit which makes possible a greater quantity of high-octane gasoline refined from each barrel of crude oil. This modern refinery is a definite asset to the City of Laurel, and the staff of the ’53 “Laurels” wishes to express its congratulations to the Farmers Union on their completion of this project and again thank them for their co-operation in producing the ’53 “Laurels.” 3
