Laurel Mo leara Foreword ................. 3 Dedica ion ............... 4 Administration ........... 5 Seniors .................. 9 Juniors ..................25 Sophomores ...............31 Freshmen..................37 Organizations ............43 Activities................65 Advertising...............73 2 F O R E W O R D The pages of this book are of interest to all the students of Laurel High School, being a source of enjoyment today as they reflect your present interests and view points; they will also bea source of enjoyment tomorrow when they will be reviewed by those matured in years and responsibilities. These pages will be particularly of interest to the members of the class of 1953 whose creation it is. They will also be of considerable interest to the public, giving as they do another view of that great American institution—the public schools. —Superintendent Fred W. Graff. The staff of this 1953 Laurels wishes to express thanks and appreciation to the Farmers Union Central Exchange, Inc., for the part it has played in the production of the yearbook by sponsoring the end sheets of this annual and providing the photographs used on division pages. These photographs show the result of the expansion program which was completed last year and which makes the Laurel Refinery one of the most modern in the world. These new facilities included a catalytic cracking unit which makes possible a greater quantity of high-octane gasoline refined from each barrel of crude oil. This modern refinery is a definite asset to the City of Laurel, and the staff of the ’53 “Laurels” wishes to express its congratulations to the Farmers Union on their completion of this project and again thank them for their co-operation in producing the ’53 “Laurels.” 3 DEDICATION In honor of Miss Roscoe—who has given so much of her time and received so little in return, we respectfully dedicate the 1953 Laurels. The senior class feels very fortunate in having a sponsor who has been so willing and untiring in her efforts to further the class as a whole. During the four years that Miss Roscoe has sponsored the class we have achieved much in all fields, both scholastically and as far as extracurricular activities are concerned. The class of ’53, therefore, feels very proud to be able in some way to repay what Miss Roscoe has done for us. ADMINISTRATION 5 MR. FRED W. SEASON'S RECORD Games won — 1 Games lost — 7 Due to the fine spirit and will-to-win of the 1952 football squad, both coach and fans considered the season to be successful. However, the team finished the season with a very poor win and loss column, which was due to the inexperience of the team. The opening game of the season was lost to Powell, our yearly rivals, by a score of 34-25. The Billings Central Hams completely out-fought and trampled the Locomotives, for the second year in a row, by a score of 54-13. By defeating the Locomotives 31-6, the Glendive Red Devils displayed their power and exper ience, as they do every year. This year the Miles City Cowboys came up with a small, fighting team and was a very strong contender in the conference. They defeated the Locomotives 25-0, as the Laurel eleven’s offense fell apart with the loss of first string quarterback Dennis Johnson. The fifth game of the year was proof that the Locomotives were out to win, as they played very good ball; but without the services of first string guard Ed Leuthold, the defense was not up to par, and the trainmen lost, 21-6, to Sidney. Chalking up their only win of the season, Laurel played its best game against the Livingston Rangers and emerged victorious with a score of 24-8. The next game found the Locomotives matched against Lewistown. The Laurel crew was favored to win, but lost 26-13. The final game of the season still showed the Locomotives fighting with the will to win, but the Glasgow Scotties had too much power on the ground and defeated the Locomotives 39-0. 66 BASKETBALL TOP ROW: Rex Sommers, Jim Faisermon, Gene Leach, Jim Murry, Ronnie Hegemon, John Herink. CENTER: Dan Freund. BOTTOM ROW: Dick Weiber, Gory Hageman, Bob Schessler, Ducne Tinnes. This year's team was very' inexperienced, having only two returning lettermen, Jim Murry and Dan Freund. The team was fast, fairly tall, averaging about 6 feet, but they lacked experience which a team must have if it is to be a winner. Despite their inexperience they were always in there fighting and never giving up. The team won only 4 games while losing 17 during regular season play. The team as a whole and the majority of the players improved steadily as the season progressed. The experience and knowledge of basketball that they were taught by Coach Roberts will help them greatly in their years of basketball to come. The team got a berth in the divisional tournament by defeating Dillon 55 to 54. But they were eliminated from further tourney play by losing their next two games.
