o— TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY DALLAS. TIXAS MtANS KTTW YLaMQQKS Mm™ This year's annual is a new phase from what has gone before. For the first time we are delivering this year's LAURELS in the fall of the year so that it may contain all of the spring activities. We believe that this is a good plan and hope that you enjoy the added features. The annual staff feel they have made the 1952 LAURELS an annual to be proud of and sincerely hope that you enjoy it. wSffiJvX v •• y. V.-'y. BHSHRK. 'Wmm ■ v . ;X: Kv v the senior class of 1952, gratefully dedicate this annual to Miss Helen Kamer of our appreciation and zell as a token knowledgment guidance she has given to the annual staff, The problems ahead of you will be less difficult, ana the uncertainty of your future less disturbing, if you will at this hour resolve to work hard at any task that comes your way. It will be an unfortunate day for mankind when no concern need be felt for one's future. Success is a personal thing—you cannot buy or inherit it, you must win it. You have had the advantage of twelve years' training, and your country still keeps ajar the door of opportunity to those who have the determination to remove those obstacles that may be encountered on the paths ahead. —Fred W. Graff Today our country is engaged in a worldwide struggle—a struggle challenging the very foundation on which our way of life is based. Out of this conflict will come the world of tomorrow with its freedom and hope, or a world of slavery and despair. A few of this graduating class may be called upon to don a military uniform in our fight, while others will be asked to contribute in other ways. Laurel High School has given the tools with which each of you can contribute in many ways toward our effort to create a better world. Use these tools often ana improve upon them so that you will not be the weak link in the chain. FACULTY MISS ARNTZEN MR. BOWEN MISS GUNDERSON MR. SENIOR HISTORY We, the Class of '52, leave regretfully, but willing to take up the tasks that life offers us. In 1948, we entered the halls of LHS as sixty-nine green freshmen” under the leadership of three different sponsors: Miss Roscoe, Mr. Arington, and Mr. Brown. The officers elected were: president, Herman Wagner; Vice-president, Andy Zahn; secretary, Loraine Moorman; treasurer, Nayan Cartee; SAC representative, Bob Smith. Herman Wagner and Shirley Adams were our candidates for the Laurel Leaves contest. The Carnival was the first money-making scheme we undertook, having two booths, darts and ball throwing. Peggy Bernhardt was our choice for Carnival Queen. As sophomores, we were a bit more experienced in the ways of high school life and decided to be satisfied with only one sponsor instead of our usual three since there was not much for us to do this year. Under the guidance of Miss Roberts, we elected Jim Brohaugh, president; Janet Frant, vice-president; Shirley Adams, secretary; Judy Huntington, treasurer; Kenny Leuthold and Betty Jones, SAC representatives. Pat Bender and George Bangert were nominated as our candidates in the Laurel Leaves contest. Upperclassmen at last--as juniors, we were kept busy from the very first weeks of school by selling concessions at all football and basketball games, as well as at the tournament. With the able assistance of Miss Varcoe, and Mr. Sawhill, we elected our dutiful cabinet which consisted of Don Brown, president; Henry Meyers, vice-president; Shirley Adams, secretary; Florine Lehr, treasurer; Nayan Cartee, Judy Huntington and Terry Hirschfelt, SAC representatives. In this junior year we ordered our class rings from the Josten Company. We didn't receive our rings until early spring. As tradition has it, we too had to put on a junior-senior prom and banquet. A pirate theme was used and carried out by everything from bloody swords to treasure chests. Our candidates for the Laurel Leaves contest were Darlene Frank and Ken Leuthold. This same year we presented the play, Bill’s Night Out, under the direction of Miss Rose Sampson. After jolts and jostling, we finally reached our senior year. We elected Ken Leuthold, president; Shirley Adams, vice-president; Elsie Frank, secretary; Nayan Cartee, treasurer; Jim Brohaugh, Don Brown, Kathleen Keener, and Ken Leuthold, SAC representatives. We ordered our senior announcements from the Balfour Company. As seniors, we worked hard on our new annual with Shirley Adams and Ken Leuthold acting as co-editors and Miss Helen Kamerzell as our capable advisor. With the assistance of Miss Rose Sampson, the seniors presented the play, The Bishop’s Mantle. The football team of the '51 season definitely did not live up to expectations. Coaches throughout the state picked them as the champions, on paper, before the start of the season. They had the experience, power, brawn, brains and ability, but lacked the co-operation and team play that makes any team great. They had a season record of 3 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie, and a conference record of 2 wins, and 3 losses. Three boys, Harry Hodges, George Bangert, and Kenny Leuthold were on the all-conference first string, while George Schreiner and Lawrence Brese were on the second string. Leuthold and Hodges were both second string all-staters also. BASKETBALL Although they took the Southern Divisional Conference title with a 10-4 record, the 51-52 Laurel basketball team didn’t live up to their expectations, as they suffered successive defeats at the hands of Big Timber and Anaconda Central in the Divisional tournament at Red Lodge. Rated as one of the best in the state, the Locomotives suffered from inconsistency and ended the season with a 14-9 record. They had the ability but lacked the determination to win. that is so essential to champions. They had a fairly successful season considering the opposition they had. With a little more experience, they can develop into a top-notch club. Left to right: John Herink, Jay Kaiserman, Gene Leach, Dick Weiber, Bob Schessler, Jim Kaiserman, Dean Frank, Gary Hagerman, Eddy Leuthold, Bob Lane, Bill Klein, Ronald Markovich; Manager, David Groll. Jim Kaiserman, Charles Rodgers, Jay Kaiser-man, Rex Sommers, Dick Wieber. The track squad of 52 was hampered by inexperience as only five upperclassmen turned out. Still they had a fairly successful year with a number of the younger boys showing well. The top point producers were Henry Meyers and Don Schessler in the weights and Dan Freund in the sprints with Lee Byrd, a freshman showing well in the mile. With a little more experience these boys can help to revive a sport that has long been dormant in Laurel. Coach Pierre Roberts was assisted this year by Lyle Jones. Three boys represented Laurel in the state interscholastic meet at Missoula. They were Dan Freund, sprints; Lee Byrd, distance; and Henry Meyers, weights. This year Meyers became the first boy from Laurel in a long time to win a first place at the meet. Henry started throwing the javelin actively this year and consistently threw it farther than anyone else in the state. He was the only boy with enough points to win a track letter this year. Besides being a track letterman this senior boy also was a two-year letterman in basketball. MEYERS. State Winner Annual Subscribers Art Central Bound Leaves Readers No Fair! Whatcha Doing?
