Moody l Terry Hamilton, Manager FOOTBALL The Red Raiders The 1959 Latta Red Raiders ended the season by bowing to the arch-rival Dillon Wildcats. Latta did not post an impressive record, winning only two while losing eight. The majority ol this year's players were inexperienced, and many were playing lor the first time. All indications point to a much better record next year. The nine graduating Red Raiders are Billy Bethea, Eddie Brunson, Gary Bullard, Warren Fore, Maclc Gaddy, Malcolm George, Eddie Hatchell, Gary Johnson, and Wallace Sellers. Eddie Brunson, Eddie Hatchell, Gary Johnson, Malcolm George, and Wallace Sellers saw action in the annual Tobacco Bowl in Florence. Latta Coach Leon Maxwell coached the East side ol the Pee Dee to a 14-0 victory over the West side in that game. SEATED, LEFT TO RIGHT: Lundy, Brown, Berry, Haselden, Dew. SECOND ROW: G. E :'.' , ' A COACH CAPTAINS MANAGERS James Moody Jean Fore, Paula Dew Ann George, Sally Manning Jean Griffin GIRL 9 BASKET-B LL The Raiderettesn Finishing the season with an over-all record of 18 victories and only 4 loses, the 1959 Raiderettes had the best season of any team since 1955. With an average of 45.7 points per game, the girls outscored by a wide margin their opponents whose average was 29.7 points. High scorers For the Raider- ettes were Paula Dew, a 22-point average, Sissy McMillan, 16 points, and Betty Parham, 12 points. Diane Shelley also saw much action as a forward. Starting guards were Joyce Coleman, Jean Fore, and Marguerite Moore. Ending the regular season with a 14-2 record, the girls defeated McColl in the first game of the Confer- ence Tournament, held in the Latta gym. After losing to Timmonsville in the next game of the double- elimination tournament, they came back to win the next three contests, but were edged by the Whirlwinds again the final game to take runner-up honors. Latta dominated the All-Conference Team with three players to attain that honor: Guards Jean Fore and Joyce Coleman, and forward Paula Dew. This is the second year that Paula has won that honor, by receiving the largest number of votes, she was named captain oi the group. Players who graduate are Marguerite Moore, Joyce Coleman, Jean Fore, Jeilda Lee, Sissy McMillan, and Paula Dew. Though five of the starting lineup will not be back, Coach James Moody and the girls are hoping for another good season next year.
