I BOYS GIRL STATERS s 5 ii 6 is 2 S Boys and Girls States are sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary for the purpose ol teaching citizenship and democratic government. The Girls' State representatives and alter- nates, Jeanie Griffin and Ann Weatherly, were chosen by the Senior girls. The Boysi State representatives and alternates, Doug Parham LEFT TO RIGHT: Randy Lane, Paula Dew, Marian LeGette, Billy Bethea, Y 9 9 CHEERLEADERS and Edward Hatchell, were chosen b the faculty. The choices were based on character, personality, and leadership. Clad in red and black, the cheerleaders are one of the flashiest groups at Latta High School. Accompanied by their sponsor, Mrs. Lula B. Manning, these girls led the cheering sections at all football and basketball games and pep rallies. They were cheerleaders Ior the East side at the Pee Dee Tobacco Bowl Game. Second-grader Joy Bethea is mascot. SEATED, LEFT TO RIGHT: Margaret Ellen McCutcheon, Mollie Wise. In December a group of these musicians presented a arogram ol organ and piano religious music at the Methodist Church. Diane Shelley, Libby Monroe, Leila Parham, Claire Shelley, Paula Dew, lrlarian LeGette, and Freddie Ellis have won superior ratings at District and State Music Festivals. This group ol musicians are piano students ol Mrs. Dollie S. Rice. They have music lessons either once or twice a week. Both elementary school and high school pupils are eligible to take lessons. This is Mrs. Rice's first year in Latta and her second year ol teaching. She received a B.S. degree in Public School Music at Erskine College. Their work is olten overlooked and rarely appreciated by the student bod . The office assistants give up one study period. Their duties includle running errands, taking telephone calls, and operating the duplicating machine. They receive no pay or favors lor their services. Over the years Latta High School bus drivers have had a com- mendable safety record. This record has been upheld again this year by a capable group ol drivers. The responsible position that these drivers hold is recognized by all students. Other students who have Driver's Certificates are Howard Beckwith, Vic Bethea, Junior Hunt, Ralph Jackson, Edison Lee, Bill McDonald, Joe Sanderson, and Stephen Williamson.
