This year's band was young and laclced experience, but it showed much potentiality at its appearances. Under the direction ol Band- master Clarence F. Hayes, who is an excellent musician, the future lor the Band appears bright. Mr. Hayes is one ol the finest clarinetist anywhere. ln January the Band was host to the Eastern District Band Clinic. AN These five high-steeping girls led the Latta High School Band in its appearances at football games, pep rallies, and parades throughout the year. They were paced by Senior Peggy Shelley who has displayed excellent ability lor two years. Other majorettes were Senior Joyce Coleman, Gwen Haselden, a Junior, Joyce Collins, a Sophomore: and Linda Hayes, a Freshman. The Senior Class successfully presented Rest Assured as its annual l - W play in April. This distinctly different comedy paclced a laugh-a-line, but it also carried a fine lesson. Warren Fore and Randy Lane por- trayed heavy character roles with ability and finesse. The 16 Seniors in the cast agree it was much work but more fun. To them it will ever Y be a cherished memory. Louisa Mae Alcott's Little Women was the Junior Play for the Class of 1959. Portrayed in authentic costumes in an appropriate setting, this play will long be remembered. The performance was ably .. - coached by Mrs. Elizabeth King. The four Little Women were Meg, Sally Manning, Jo, Paula Dew, Beth, Marian LeGette, and Amy, Sissy Y 1 s McMillan. They present :wo recitals each year and serve the community and churches with :heir talent. In December a group of these musicians presented a arogram ol organ and piano religious music at the Methodist Church. Diane Shelley, Libby Monroe, Leila Parham, Claire Shelley, Paula Dew, lrlarian LeGette, and Freddie Ellis have won superior ratings at District and State Music Festivals. This group ol musicians are piano students ol Mrs. Dollie S. Rice. They have music lessons either once or twice a week. Both elementary school and high school pupils are eligible to take lessons. This is Mrs. Rice's first year in Latta and her second year ol teaching. She received a B.S. degree in Public School Music at Erskine College.
