Much of the credit for this goes to Mr. B. F. Carmichael, who has served the school lor 36 years. Under his guidance the school has become a member ol the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Latta Area Schools now consist ol six schools with modern Facilities and well-qualified faculties. SECRETARY MRS. LULA B. MANNING A.B. University of South Carolina Agnes Scott College While fulfilling her duties as school secretary, Mrs. Manning always finds time to cooperate with students and organizations. The Senior Class successfully presented Rest Assured as its annual l - W play in April. This distinctly different comedy paclced a laugh-a-line, but it also carried a fine lesson. Latta did not post an impressive record, winning only two while losing eight. The majority ol this year's players were inexperienced, and many were playing lor the first time. All indications point to a much better record next year. E :'.' , ' A COACH CAPTAINS MANAGERS James Moody Jean Fore, Paula Dew Ann George, Sally Manning Jean Griffin GIRL 9 BASKET-B LL The Raiderettesn Finishing the season with an over-all record of 18 victories and only 4 loses, the 1959 Raiderettes had the best season of any team since 1955. With an average of 45.7 points per game, the girls outscored by a wide margin their opponents whose average was 29.7 points. High scorers For the Raider- ettes were Paula Dew, a 22-point average, Sissy McMillan, 16 points, and Betty Parham, 12 points. Diane Shelley also saw much action as a forward. Starting guards were Joyce Coleman, Jean Fore, and Marguerite Moore. Ending the regular season with a 14-2 record, the girls defeated McColl in the first game of the Confer- ence Tournament, held in the Latta gym. After losing to Timmonsville in the next game of the double- elimination tournament, they came back to win the next three contests, but were edged by the Whirlwinds again the final game to take runner-up honors. Latta dominated the All-Conference Team with three players to attain that honor: Guards Jean Fore and Joyce Coleman, and forward Paula Dew. This is the second year that Paula has won that honor, by receiving the largest number of votes, she was named captain oi the group. Players who graduate are Marguerite Moore, Joyce Coleman, Jean Fore, Jeilda Lee, Sissy McMillan, and Paula Dew. Though five of the starting lineup will not be back, Coach James Moody and the girls are hoping for another good season next year. Rice Eddie Hatchell, Malcolm George Billy Clyde Parham BOYS' BASKETBALL The Red Raiders The Red Raiders ended a very successful season with an over-all record ol 12 victories and 8 losses. Eddie Hatchell, who averaged 19.1 points per game, Malcolm George, with an average of 14.7, and Junior Hunt averaging 8.9, paced the Latta boys to an average of 45.6 oints per game against 43.5 by their opponents. Otiers who played the most lor the Raiders were William Coleman, LaFon LeGette, and Walker Graham. Seniors on the team were Malcolm George, Eddie Hatchell, and Mack Gaddy. G6ing into the Conference Tournament, held on the home court, Latta had a record ol 10 victories and 6 losses. The Red Raiders took two successive victories from McColl and Lamar, but dropped the next two games to East Clarendon and Mayewood in the double-elimination tournament. Malcolm George was one ol five picked from the eight .teams in the tournament to be a member ol the All-Conference Team. This is the second year he has won that honor. Losing only two lrom the starting lineup, and ably coached by Mr. E. E. Rice, the Red Raiders are hoping lor another good season next year. The team did not mark up to any ol the previous State Championship Teams and had only a 4-4 record in regular season play. The Raiders dropped two conference play- off games to powerful East Clarendon.
