V.-xLEi, One of the hardest things in a schoolmaster's life is to keep on saying good-bye to his friends. just when he has got to know them well, in that closer association that comes in the final year when they have divided respdnsibilities with him in various ways. he must send them on their way to business or to the different colleges they have chosen. And how quickly that last year goes! Emily Dickinson, the brilliant and seclusive poet of Amherst, spoke truly when she said: Parting is all we know of Heaven And all we want of Hell. I have always wanted to have for my epitaph I'll see you later! I do not wish to imitate the advice-giving Polonius lest you should turn on me as Hamlet did, saying, with a rotary motion of his hand near his head. Buzzl Buzz! At any rate by this time you must have become tired of admonitions. You have been given more counsel now that you are likely to use. and there will be a good deal left in your purse for future spending. XVhat I particularly want you to feel is that you have left. in this school, a very real place for yourselves and that, because you are out of sight you will not be out of mind. Ive XV2lUt you to return to visit the school whenever you can. IVhen you have finished your college course and settled down in business and have boys of your own, we hope you will take them by the hand and lead them here with all the assurance in the world that they will receive the wannest welcome and the best training that we can give them. This is the sort of apostolic succession that a school of this sort should have. IVe of the faculty come and go, but the school will go on indefinitely, for it has been incorporated, not for personal gain, but for the continuing welfare of the community. Your enduring loyalty to its best interests will be one of the tests of its success. lVe shall watch your careers with affectionate interest. In college we hope you will get down to business at once and establish yourselves well in the good-will of the insti- tutions, postponing until your second year much active participation in outside activities. Do not let your heads be turned by fraternities. Just remember that as soon as the pledge-button has been put into your buttonhole you become a craven slave. and all the bouquets that have been thrown at you will wither and crumble. Sic transit gloria mundif' You will envy the molecule its enormous size. And now good-bye, or rather, Aufwiedersehen . Remember that you go from us as ambassadors and representatives of your old school. Do Il0t forget that we shall be keen to hear of every honor you gain in your careers. Ivrite to us often. Let me hand on to you this final word for you to mull over: Bly son. consider the postage stamp. It achieves success through its ability to stick to one thing until it gets there. G. X.
