Khe 1987-88 school year brought with it several est eemed academic awards. ' The most prominent of these awards was the Merit Scholarship. Fourteen of Lassiter ' s Seniors qualified as semifinalists for this prestigious award. These Seniors are: Jennifer Albertson, Alaine Davis, John DiGeorge, Bruce Elder, Amanda Ennis, James Fitzsimmons, Michael Fuchs, Amanda Hudson, Cynthia Johnson, Gregory McLean, Janet Nelson, Mark Pitely, Robert Smithers, and Craig Widess. The National Merit Scholarship Program awards scholarships to academically talented high school students to facilitate their undergraduate studies. The program is a non-profit organization that devotes itself to helping intelligent students achieve their goals. The Semifinalist ' s names were released to the media in the fall of 1987. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation also sent a list of the student ' s names to four-year U.S. colleges and universities. This honor is regarded highly by these institutions and; therefore, such a scholarship can easily assist a semifinaiist into the college of his or her choice. A semifinaiist must advance to the final ist stage to receive any scholarship. Ninety-percent of the semifinaiist were expected to reach the finalist position. The finalists were notified through their school in February, and they received a Certificate of Merit. Finalists were chosen according to their academic records, extracurricular accomplishments, contributions to the school and community, scores from the PSAT and the SAT, school recommendations, and student self-descriptions. These factors provided an insight into each finalist while highlighting their goals, achievements, and dreams. The gathered information surrounding each finalist became significant in choosing the winners. The winners of the corporate sponsored Merit Scholarships met strict criteria cited by the corporations and businesses. Most of these awards are designated for the children of company employees, but a few are awarded to outstanding residents of the community. These scholarships are usually four year grants that range from $500 to $8000 yearly. The college sponsored scholarships are awarded to Merit Scholars from some 200 institutions annually. The colleges themselves grant from $250 to $2000 per year. College officials chose the winners of their scholarships from the finalists who were accepted for admission to the school. The college grant must be used at the institution that awarded the scholarship. The outstanding students that qualified as National Merit Semifinalists accom- plished a great feat. Many doors opened to them as a result of their dedication and hard work. The honors of accepting a prestigious grant from large corpora- tions and academic institutions assisted these extraordinary students in con- tinuing their education.
